The Medical Research Council Medical Cyclotron Unit (MRCMCU) was based at Hammersmith Hospital. It carried out research and treatment using a radium beam and linear accelerator.

Papers of the Medical Research Council Medical Cyclotron Unit (MRCMCU), 1934-1961, comprising records relating to the Radium Beam Therapy Research Committee, 1933-1945; and records, including case registers, of treatment carried out using the radium beam and linear accelerator, 1934-1960.

Certain restrictions apply. All of section A is available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, by prior appointment with the Archivist after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking. The majority of section B is closed, as it comprises case registers containing personal medical information.

Photocopies/photographs/microfilm are supplied for private research only at the Archivist's discretion. Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances. Readers are restricted to 100 photocopies in twelve months. Researchers who wish to publish material must seek copyright permission from the copyright owner.

Much of the work of the MRCMCU was carried out in conjunction with the Strangeways Research Laboratory(SA/SRL). The papers of F G Spear, its Deputy Director are also available (PP/FGS). The papers of Constance A P Wood, Director of the MRC Radiotherapeutic Research Unit, Hammersmith Hospital, 1941-1962 (GC/95) and the diaries and correspondence of John Gallop, Senior Engineer on the project during its development (GC/160) include useful accounts of the evolution of the Cyclotron Unit.
