The Multiple Sclerosis Society (MSS) was set up in 1953 by Sir Richard Cave (1912-1988), "to co-operate with the medical profession to encourage scientific research into the causes of and the cure for Multiple Sclerosis and to aid and ameliorate the conditions of those suffering from it ... to encourage sufferers to join a local group for self help and to join activities and entertainments".

Files transferred in 1977 from the House of Lords office of Sir Richard Cave, MVO,KSG, founder and chairman of the MSS.

Papers of the Multiple Sclerosis Society (MSS), 1953-1977, comprising general files relating to the MSS headquarters, 1953-1976; medical files relating to the MSS headquarters, 1955-1976; files relating to MSS regional branches, 1954-1977; and records relating to the International Federation of Multiple Sclerosis Societies, 1955-1977.

Ephemeral correspondence (e.g. relating to travel arrangements), and duplicate items have been weeded.

At the time of cataloguing in 1987, further accessions of material relating to the Society were expected in the future.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.

Photocopies/photographs/microfilm are supplied for private research only at the Archivist's discretion. Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances. Readers are restricted to 100 photocopies in twelve months. Researchers who wish to publish material must seek copyright permission from the copyright owner.
