Papers created by the the Sicherheitsdienst on the membership and activities of Jewish organisations in Erfurt, Germany, 1930s, including correspondence, reports, membership lists of organisations and questionnaires.

The bulk of this microfilm collection consists of material emanating from the Deutsche Arbeitsfront (DAF), 1933-1939. Included are documents marked 'secret' which record the prevailing views within the Deutsche Arbeitsfront on the extent of industrial action in the Third Reich and other issues relating to industrial relations. There is also a considerable amount of correspondence from the DAF to the company Wilhem Edel, margarine manufacturers, covering a variety of matters related to worker/employee relations. In addition there are number of publications and periodicals on the subject.

Correspondence chiefly dates from after the Slovak National Uprising, Aug-Oct 1944, which had included a relatively high percentage of Jews.

Correspondence documenting the concerns of the distinguished academic, Charles Singer and colleagues, in relation to the restrictions on academic freedom in Nazi Germany and in particular the discrimination against non-Aryan professors during the Heidelberg University Jubilee celebrations, 1935. Records of the Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland (Reich Agency for Jews in Germany), 1933-1938. The papers include committee minutes, reports, memoranda, circulars and correspondence detailing all aspects of the organisation's activities. Also included within 602/8 is a file of transcribed correspondence regarding Gross-Breesen, a non-zionist training camp set up by the Reichsvertretung to prepare young people for life abroad.

The trial transcripts and other papers of Adolf Eichmann, (1906-1962), comprises copy transcripts of the trial proceedings, 1961 (621/1) copy transcripts of the Eichmann appeal proceedings, 1962 (621/2); copy transcriptions and translations of documents which issued mainly from the Nuremberg War Crimes trial, c 1940 (621/3/1-14), these notably include many affidavits from witnesses and correspondence to and from Eichmann. The collection includes additional copies of proceedings and trial judgements, 1961-1962 (621/4-5).

Papers relating to a trial of six Danish Nazis for anti-semitic libel, in Copenhagen, 1937, including transcript of a declaration by the Chief Rabbi of Denmark, which takes the form of written answers to questions about the content of the anti-semitic publications produced by the defendants; copies of court documents, including indictment and notes about the Dänischer Verband gegen Rassenhass, including aims and objectives, dates, names of committee members.

Papers gathered during the course of research for a Thames Television documentary on Kurt Waldheim's role during the Second World War, comprising photocopies of documents with their translations recording Waldheim's activities in connection with the following war crimes which occurred in the Balkans and Greece between 1942 and 1944: the murder and deportation of civilians in Bosnia to Jasenovac, Spring and Summer, 1942; the murder of Greek civilians and the deportation of Italian POWs to slave labour camps after the Italian capitulation, Summer 1943; the deportation of Jews to Auschwitz from Crete, Corfu and Rhodes, Summer 1944; the torture and murder of captured allied commandos, Summer 1944 and other war crimes committed by the Nazis in the Balkans and Greece.

Copy of an expert report on the duty of obedience of SS leaders particularly with regard to orders to murder, by Dr Hans-Günther Seraphim, lecturer of Göttingen University, 1960. The report deals with the implications of refusal by SS officers to comply with orders to execute those regarded as enemies of the state. Produced for the Landgericht, Münster.

Papers relating to Nazi propaganda against Great Britain including list of Nazi propagandists against Great Britain giving brief biographical details and letter from Dorothy Woodman, secretary of The Union of Democratic Control to Dr Warburg of the Jewish Board of Deputies regarding Max Kohl, a Nazi propagandist who had addressed a meeting held by the Salisbury Post War Brotherhood, 1937.

Correspondence of Lazarus Horowitz, 1939-1948, comprising letters from friends and relatives thanking him for his help and describing their plight in either fleeing from the Nazis or being held captive by them.

Papers relating to anti-Semitism in Holland comprising letter from Professor D Cohen in Holland to Neville Laski in London on anti-Semitism in Holland, 13 Jul 1936; notes on Comité van waakzamheid, an organisation founded in 1936 by intellectuals in Holland to counter the Dutch Nazi movement and photograph of an antisemitic leaflet.

Papers of Joyce Weiner, 1933-1934, comprising copies of correspondence from Arnold Zweig to Weiner on the subject of his literary problems, 6 Sep 1933-30 Dec 1934; copy of a letter from Lola Sernau to Weiner, 3 Aug 1933 and a short biographical account of Weiner, 8 Apr 1934.

Correspondence from Hellmut Lange to Jessie Nicholson including newspaper cuttings c1935; Correspondence from German friends to Jessie Nicholson. Whilst precious little is known about the recipient of the letters, they provide a valuable insight into the mentality of an ordinary German whose nationalist and antisemitic leanings develop into full-blown Nazi sympathy by the outbreak of war.

Copies of transcriptions of speeches made by Baldur von Schirach, dealing mainly with youth in Nazi Germany, 19 Apr 1940-20 Dec 1944. Each speech was subsequently checked and edited by Mia Thiel Hansen in the employ of the BBC, 19 Nov 1945. An original certificate of authentication signed by Mia Thiel Hansen is enclosed with each speech. Speeches include speech on behalf of the Hitler Youth congratulating Hitler, 19 Apr 1940; speech in which Schirach replies to President Franklin D Roosevelt and attacks him, particularly on youth employment, education and health, 4 Sep 1942; speech in which Schirach replies to Roosevelt, claiming to be partly of American descent, including a strong personal attack on Roosevelt and eulogies on Hitler, 5 Sep 1942; speech attacking Roosevelt for the Visits Foundation of European Youth League in Vienna, hosted by Italy and Germany, 14 Sep 1942; address to volunteers of the Tank Grenade Division in which he exhorts 'the traitors shall fall and the nation shall conquer' (after the July 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler), 7 Aug 1944 and broadcasts on the evacuation of children, 20 Dec 1944.

Confidential printed orders, 18 Oct 1941, regarding the role of Mischlinge in the Jugenddienst issued by the Jugendführer des Deutschen Reichs to various regional administrations and the heads of various central government ministries. It makes the distinction between Mischlinge 2 Grades (having one Jewish grandparent) and less, who are to be treated as German and Mischlinge 1 Grades (having 2 Jewish grandparents), who are to be placed on 'standby' but under no circumstances to be called up for service.

Copies of contracts and notarial certificate documenting the sale of a house at Burgschmietstrasse 12, Nuremberg, property of Max and Frieda Landenberger, to Gauleiter Hölz for the sum of RM 4,000 and a summary of the event, 4 Dec 1938-27 Feb 1939. This collection is an example of the way in which the Nazis forcibly appropriated Jewish property under the guise of a legitimate transaction into which both parties freely entered.

Copies of papers documenting the time spent by Karl Wittig in concentration camps during the Nazi era, 1938-1947, including letters to his wife and sworn statements, including by Martin Niemöller that he knew Karl Wittig as a political prisoner in Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

Papers concerning Kristallnacht, 1939-1960, notably includes responses from rabbis to the Wiener Library, regarding the fate of their former synagogues in Germany during Kristallnacht, 1939; statistics on the fate of synagogues in Germany during Kristallnacht, 1939 and 1960; a translation of a Nazi document regarding the fate of synagogues in Germany during Kristallnacht and copies of contemporary Nazi newspaper extracts describing events on the same night, undated.

French Anti-Nazi leaflet, 1938, entitled 'Et Voici La Preuve', which disclaims the thesis that the Kristallnacht pogrom was a spontaneous, popular, outpouring of anger. The leaflet incorporates a facsimile of a document from the Kriminalpolizei, Vienna, headed 'Judenaktion' in which it is made obvious that Kristallnacht was organised from above.

A microfilm copy of the central registry of membership of the Reichskulturkammer (RKK), 1930s-1940s, arranged alphabetically by individual surname. Originally maintained by the personnel section of the RKK, index cards have been supplemented by entries made by Allied occupation authorities. For each individual, one or more cards provide: name and address, birthdate and place, profession, RKK membership data and notations regarding political reliability and racial background. Also included in some instances are annotations from the Allied occupation authorities on denazification proceedings and artists' acceptibility for post war performances.

Papers of Edgar Duchin, 1930s-1940s, comprise circulars, reports, minutes and memoranda of the Refugee Joint Consultative Committee, Central Refugee Committee and the Central Office of Refugees concerning tribunals, employment, allowances, welfare and communication with Germany; agenda, minutes and reports of the National Council of Civil Liberties with respect to refugee matters; papers of the Haldane Society including Duchin's draft report of the Sub-Committee on the Law Relating to Aliens; information sheets and other papers of the organisation Democratic Aid, concerned with the rights of interned aliens, specifically immigrants from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia who were politically active in Left Wing politics and were subsequently interned in Great Britain, includes transcripts of interviews with Otto Beuer, Karl Kreibich, Ludwig Freund and Anton Rudal; correspondence regarding individual cases in which Duchin was involved as a solicitor; minutes of meetings, Parliamentary Debates and correspondence regarding distribution of Nazi assets and a collection of miscellaneous papers including minutes of various committees including the Friendly Aliens Protection Committee and reports of various organisations on various matters including Council for German Jewry, 1938.

Papers of Youth Aliyah workers, comprise typescript reports on the experiences of children who managed to escape Nazi occupied Europe and arrived in Palestine, 1944. The names of the children are represented as initials.

Papers concerning the persecution of Jews in Berlin, 1935-1945, notably include copies of an arrest warrant for Leo Boschwitz, 1935, for the destruction of a copy Der Stürme and his release from Lichtenburg concentration camp in the same year; a good conduct certificate issued by Camp le Vernet for Kurt Nohe, 1940; detailed instructions issued by the jüdische Kultusvereinigung zu Berlin to Regina Montilja prior to her deportation to 'the Protectorate', 1942; pro forma summons to the assembly station at Grosse Hamburger Strasse, Berlin, 1943, and at Schulstrasse 78, Berlin, 1944.

Letters from friends and family to Siegfried Grossbard, 1922-1962, on topics including the Richborough Internment Camp and the German Jewish Aid Committee; reference to Lingfield Internment camp and of experiences as an internee in Australia; brother-in-law, Erwin's account of survival of the occupation in France; conditions in Germany during the immediate postwar era, from ex-internee, Roger Freeman; claims for restitution relating to the Aryanisation of the Grossbard family business; and letters from Otto Morawetz to Grossbard regarding family and friends and life in the USA.

War crimes trials: trial papers including detailed indictments and verdicts of various post-World War Two war crimes trials; reports on trials by observers; copy statements and other papers, 1947-1967.

Papers of Julian Lehmann, chiefly comprising press cuttings from German language newspapers 1916-1930s on topics including the life and work of contemporary Jewish personalities such as Freud, Einstein and Stefan Zweig and articles of a general Jewish interest. In addition there are a number of draft typescript articles and notes, either clearly authored by Julian Lehmann or written on headed note paper with his name, on subjects ranging from obituary notices to the experiences of German Jewish immigrants to Great Britain during the Nazi era.

Report by August Grüber on conditions in Dachau concentration camp, 1936, giving a classification of prisoners in the camp also including mention of cabaret evenings replete with reference to jokes about conditions.

Papers, 1938-1980, documenting the compensation claims made by Edith Herzer and her sister Hilde, German Jewish immigrants to Great Britain, whose parents were murdered at Auschwitz; comprising correspondence and other papers of compensation for loss of profession, loss of inherited property and suffering under the Nazi regime; rejection by the American Consulate, London, of application for immigration visa (1234/7) and copies of extract from the municipal authorities, Nice, regarding the fate of Hugo Herzer, Edith's father.

Papers of International Bureau for the Right of Asylum and Aid to Political Refugees, 1937-1939, comprise reports and other papers concerning a proposed international convention on the problem of refugees from Nazi Germany, in France, published by the Information Service of The International Bureau for the Right of Asylum and Aid to Political Refugees, comprising committee minutes, reports, draft conventions and bulletins regarding German and Austrian refugees from the Third Reich.

Papers of Kurt Ferber, 1932-1949, comprise a set of correspondence between Kurt Ferber and a friend in Berlin, Olga Bruewitsch-Heuss; material relating to the Kampfbund für deutsche Kultur; miscellaneous contemporary newspapers and cuttings; and unidentified notes. The correspondence is of particular interest for it provides insight into the mentalities of two ordinary German citizens with special reference to their political and cultural interests. From the content it is clear that Olga Bruewitsch-Heuss is a fervent follower of the Nazis and a virulent anti-Semite.
