Papers of Allen Daley, mainly from the period after Daley's retirement in 1952 until his death in 1969. They comprise correspondence, committee papers, reports, lecture notes and photographs relating to many aspects of public health and community medicine, including other professions in the public health field and health education. Of particular note is the almost complete set of his lecture notes, articles and speeches spanning his career and retirement (see C.3), many of which include other information relating to public health gathered by Daley for the purposes of writing the speech or article. Also, after his retirement he reviewed nearly 600 book and journal articles (see C.7).

Papers of Frederick Gordon Spear, 1908-1980. These papers fall naturally into several distinct groups; items pertaining to his radiological research conducted in Cambridge at the Strangeways Laboratory, materials about the Strangeways Laboratory as an institution, presumably accumulated during his many years as deputy director, papers relating to his connections with other bodies associated with radiology, such as the Hospital Physicists Association and the British Institute of Radiology, of which he was president in 1961, publications and unpublished papers by him, and also some publications by others on subjects related to the work he was doing.

A very small amount of material, not classifiable under these headings, has been put together in a 'Personal' section.

While Spear originally studied tropical medicine, and spent some time at the Baptist Mission Hospital at Yakusu in the Belgian Congo in the early 1920s this aspect of his career is not represented in these papers.

Received along with Spear's papers were a number of notebooks formerly belonging to his first wife Ada Louisa Sowerby, which she kept during her nurse and midwifery training in London in the later 1920s.

Midwifery records of Gertrude Mary Ethel Shannon constituting a relatively full record of midwifery training in the 1920s, and thus quite unusual. They are also of interest as Mrs Shannon trained under the pioneer medical woman Annie McCall at the Clapham Maternity Hospital (which was later renamed after Dr McCall), who supplied her with a testimonial (PP/SHA/1) and signed the certificates, PP/SHA/5/1-2. The exercise book includes notes on lectures by Dr McCall. The Central Midwives Board certificate is signed by Sir Francis Champneys.

Papers of the Association of Health and Residential Care Officers including minutes, yearbooks, and files on conferences and on general organisational matters. Minutes of the entire organisation survive only from 1915 and there is a large gap for the period 1933-1946, although there are earlier minutes from No 2 and No 4 Inspection Districts. Files relating to the organisation of, and proceedings at, Annual Conferences only go back to 1961.

The archives comprise of the administrative records of the College and its predecessor bodies from 1841. The archive also includes personal and asylum records donated by former prominent Members and Fellows of the College, and some printed material in the form of booklets containing histories of mental hospitals, reports of Commissioners in Lunacy, reports on London County Asylums and Parliamentary Papers on Mental Health. Specifically, the records include:

Foundation Papers: Papers of the Association of Medical Officers of Asylums and Hospitals for the Insane (the first predecessor body of the College); Circulars received by Dr Jones of Chester announcing the preliminary meeting of the Association, with minutes of the preliminary, first and second meetings, 1841 and 1842. Announcements of Association meetings in the 1850s and 1860s; report of the Special Committee to consider the Government's Bills for the Amendment of the Laws relating to the Care and Treatment of the Insane, 1859.

Minutes and related papers: on the foundation of the Association of Medical Officers of Asylums and Hospitals for the Insane, 1841 and minutes of meetings, 1841-54, excluding 1845, 1846, 1848, 1849 and 1853 when there were no meetings. Annual meeting minutes have been abstracted onto a Meetings Database. The database can be accessed from the College Library online catalogue. There are no manuscript minutes after 1854 as the Journal of Mental Science was started in that year and the minutes printed in the journal became the official record. Financial information contained in the minutes was also considered the official record and there are no separate financial papers.

Council minutes, 1887-November 1971: with a few supporting papers, e.g. agenda. An acting sub-committee (also referred to as the managing committee) was appointed at the 1856 annual meeting and there are references to council meetings in the 1860s but no minutes before 1887 have been found. There are some omissions after 1887, especially in the early years but it is not clear if this was because there was no meeting or because no minutes were taken. Council minutes 1887-1971 have been abstracted onto the Meetings Database.

Mental Nursing Papers

The Nursing Certificates: The Certificate of Proficiency in Mental Nursing was founded at the Medico-Psychological Association Annual Meeting in 1890 and until 1921 was the only recognised qualification in mental nursing. A separate certificate in Mental Deficiency Nursing was instituted in 1919 and a short-lived Occupational Therapy Certificate was introduced in 1939. After negotiations with the General Nursing Council, the examinations for these certificates were discontinued, the last being held in 1951.

'Journal of a Red Cross VAD member on Special Service during the Great War' (in Malta), 1915-1916. The writer, Rosa Louise Hunt, describes her service with the Voluntary Aid Detachment from 25 Nov 1915 until 5 Mar 1916, in Malta, beginning with the news that she was being posted to a military hospital abroad, but breaking off abruptly while she was still in Malta.

Papers of Dr Geoffrey Edward Hale including practice cashbooks 1893-1904, obituary and notes on his practice by his wife; papers of his son, Geoffrey Hale, including practice partnership accounts, 1933-1970, record of daily consultations, 18 Oct 1960, articles, drafts and lecture notes.

The collection chiefly comprises correspondence by Florence Nightingale, either in original or in copy form. The date-span covers the whole of her life and the subjects range from her attempts to become a nurse, service in the Crimea and subsequent work reforming the training and practice of nursing, through her other concerns such as Indian sanitation, cottage hospitals and the use of medical statistics, to personal and family matters. Well-represented correspondents include her family (particularly her sister Parthenope and brother-in-law Sir Harry Verney), Sir William Aitken (1825-1892), Professor of Pathology at the Army Medical School; George Hanby De'ath (c.1862-1901), Medical Officer of Health for Buckingham; William Farr (1807-1883), statistician; Miss Louisa Gordon, Matron at St Thomas' Hospital; Miss Amy Hughes, Superintendent of the Nurses' Co-operation; Sir John Henry Lefroy (1817-1890); Charles C. Widdows Golding collection comprising a commonplace book containing records of cases at the London Hospital about the year 1786, including notes on operations performed by Richard Grindall, Henry Thompson, George Neale, and other surgeons; notes on surgery, midwifery and anatomy. Papers of John Ramsbotham, 1799-1806, comprising a volume titled Clinical Cases, containing manuscript case notes, 1799-1806. Including midwifery, innoculations, vaccinations, and the treatment of pneumonia and typhus fever (which was epidemic at Wakefield Gaol in 1803). Also containing biographical information about John Ramsbotham, compiled by John William Walker, FRCS, who donated the volume.

Video cassette tapes accumulated by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, relating to the history of anaesthesia in the 20th century. The tapes, made between 1982-2000, with the original films dating from 1916 to 1998, include some compilations, and comprise some black and white and silent material but focus predominantly on the latter part of the period. The subjects cover various anaesthetic drugs, equipment and techniques, and related subjects including midwifery, dentistry, paediatrics, emergency medicine, resuscitation, artificial respiration and intensive care, and the locations include various hospitals, and military situations. A series of oral history interviews feature eminent anaesthetists talking about their work. Some of the videos were made for conferences or training purposes, and some relate to the Association of Anaesthetists itself, including a video of the opening ceremony of no 9 Bedford Square.
