There is a reference to Prester John, and allusion is made to the office Cornwallis had held as Treasurer of the Household to Charles II:

After 7 ll. of diagrams, etc., he adds: 'Il manqueroit quelque chose à ce cours de philosophie si je n'y adjoutois la chanson que j'ai faite sur ma sortie du Séminaire'. Photocopies of four folders of correspondence relating to the disputes between Ian Hamilton Finlay and Fulcrum Press and with Coracle Press. In 1974 Ian Hamilton Finlay quarrelled with the Fulcrum Press over their First Edition of his 'The dancers inherit the party', which Finlay did not consider to be a true first edition. During 1976 the relationship between Finlay and Simon Cutts who was then running the Coracle Press and Gallery became strained with Finlay claiming that Coracle Press owed him money for his Wild Hawthorn Press publications which he had supplied to them for sale in their bookshop. He successfully sued them in Lambeth County Court. Part of the dispute also centred on articles and comments made by Ian Gardner in the publication 'Blue Tunnel'.

Collection consists of seven issues of the East Africa Command monthly magazine Jambo, Dec 1944-Jun 1945. The issues include fiction, service information, East Africa cultural articles, verse, and illustrations relating to British service in East Africa during World War Two, and notably contain articles by Damon Runyon, (William) Somerset Maugham, and J(ohn) B(oynton) Priestley

Traduit du latin et de l'italien par G.G., Interprète juré des langues orientales', with other extracts and receipts from alchemical and medical authors. The third volume contains 37 full-page symbolic alchemical water-colour drawings with 68 figures (pp. 304-369): there are two symbolic diagrams in red and black on p. 190 and illustrations of alchemical apparatus on pp. 419, 430, 547. These three MSS. have been tentatively dated c 1765, as on the fly-leaf of Vol. II is an inscription: '1762. 16 aout. Tome 2ème'. Below this is the date 1785, but by the script, they seem to have been written consecutively within a few years.

An entry on p 3, dated 1771 seems to be by a different hand. Produced in Oxford. Compiler copied from other sources down contemporary events and ideas of note. Papers cover Witkowski's writings on medical history (and other areas of history) rather than his medical activities. MSS.5036-5038 comprise press cuttings, publishers' notices, reviews, etc., relating to Witkowski's writings, plus original poems, some photographs, and some letters to him about his work; they span the bulk of his career (1865-1920). MSS.5039-5085 consist of material related closely to various published works on medical history and art history by Witkowski: typescript and holograph drafts, annotated published material, etc. Within this block of material, MSS.5057-5062 consist of a detailed critique of Folie de l'Empereur by Augustin Cabanès (1862-1928), consisting of heavily annotated copies of the published work. Also worth noting are MSS.5063-5064, copies of Witkowski's Comment j'ai appris l'Histoire Sainte, a Rabelaisian and satirical anti-clerical history. Finally, MSS.5086-5088, written under the pseudonym "Docteur Clam", comprise travel writings, recording travels in Italy, Turkey, Romania and Hungary, in 1901 (MS.5086); Egypt, in 1901-1902 (MS.5087); and Italy, in 1905 (MS.5088).

The papers cover some aspects of Head's life in detail, but there are few records of his major achievements in medicine. The records of his work (Section B) are mainly the texts of lectures and papers, but there are some case notes: B2/1 is a volume of reports on the examination of pilgrims to Lourdes which Head undertook in 1895 with the help of George Bull, an English Roman Catholic doctor from Paris; and B3 is a volume of post mortem reports on cases of shingles, which affects the same areas as visceral disease, representing, as Head discovered, the distribution of either a single nerve root or of a single segment of the spinal cord, now known as 'Head's areas'.

The photographs of Head's arm (B9) probably date from his 1905 work on the effects of severing the nerves in his own arm, and several of the papers and cuttings in Sections A4 and B18 comment upon the experiment.

In Section A is the text of an autobiography which Head dictated at some time during his last years, but apparently never completed. It covers only his childhood, schooldays at Charterhouse, his residence in Halle in 1880, his undergraduate days at Trinity College, Cambridge, and his work on the physiology of respiration with Ewald Hering at the German University in Prague from 1884 to 1886. Head's letters to his mother [Hester] (D2) give many more details of the same period, the letters from Halle including diary entries.

Head's and his wife's shared interest in art, architecture, music, literature and drama is recorded in their diaries and scrap books (Section E), and much of their correspondence (D4). Lady Head wrote novels and it is probable that the prose works in Section F are hers.

The restricted life which he and Lady Head lived after his retirement is vividly illustrated in the correspondence between Lady Head and Hester Marsden-Smedley (D6).

Regretting that he missed meeting her whilst bicycling between Guildford and Wisley: '... and in my knapsack I had brought you the lovliest [sic] edition of Sir John Suckling [poetry] that ever was'.

Papers of Alice Christiana Gertrude Meynell, 1875-1878 and 1941, comprising correspondence; namely a letter from the poet Robert Browning (1812-1889) to Meynell thanking her for giving him a copy of her book Preludes and praising the beauty of many of its poems, 1878; a letter from Wilfrid Meynell to Albert Arthur Cock (1883-1953) apologising for being unable to accept an invitation to attend some lectures and making reference to 'hundreds of German planes on their way to London and other large countries', 1941. The letters had previously been enclosed within the book which was gifted by Cock to King's College London and is now kept in the Foyle Special Collections library.

Papers of Henry Clark Barlow, comprising papers relating to his Dante studies, both published and unpublished work, including manuscripts and notes for unfinished essays and lectures, titled manuscript notebooks, titled manuscripts, notes from codices and other sources, printed matter, and papers relating to the festivals of Dante; papers relating to his other studies, including a few items on geology and theology, and many sketches relating to the history of art, to architecture and to topography; personal papers, including Barlow's diaries and journals in which he wrote his observations on the architecture, art, geology, history and people of the places he visited, travel notes, and correspondence devoted almost entirely to Dante matters; acquired papers, including photographs, pictures, books, maps, plans, printed matter and ephemera.

Papers of George Bellas Greenough, 1794-1855, falling into three broad sections: papers connected with his work, personal papers, and correspondence. They are hierarchically divided into nine series: published works; societies of which Greenough was president; travels; fields of interest; learned and scientific institutions and clubs with which he was associated; personal history; papers relating to his friends; acquired papers; and correspondence, relating mainly to geology or to some other aspect of Greenough's work. Greenough kept many series of notebooks and memorandum books into which he copied the notes he had jotted down in conversation or when reading. The 'Personal History' section contains little biographical or family data, although Greenough's early efforts in poetry, prose and translation from the Greek are well represented, and there are papers relating to his house, his garden and his investments. There are few letters to his friends.

Manuscript poem, 17th century, 'Himmelfahrt Der Ordensleute' (ascension of orders), in rhyming couplets. Folio 1r bears an inscription dated 1660, describing the text as a humorous poem on the meeting of the Roman Catholics, Jesuits, monks, etc, with the apostle Peter at the celestial gates, probably unpublished. On the last leaf (f 5v) a copper engraving is pasted, depicting the Rhine and Main from Cologne to Würzburg, and on the water boats full of Jesuits, apparently fleeing. A single Jesuit toils along the river bank with his sack full of treasures belonging to the Roman Catholic Church, which are being lost en route.

Anthology of religious poems, 17th century, including penitential prayers and verse meditations on the joys of the next world. Following an introduction (ff 1r-6v), the text from folio 7r is in verse. With marginal references to passages in the Bible, written in the authoress' own hand, throughout the text. Her identity is not revealed, except that her Christian name was Doroteha, and, given references in the introduction to her grandchildren and other relations, she probably wrote the book in later life. With the name Jacobs Himmelsleiter inside the front cover.

The vellum in which the volume is bound bears on the outside front cover traces of 13th-century text, with the heading ET VIGILIA.
