Papers of Colin William Fraser McClare, c1957-1981, comprising biographical and autobiographical material; laboratory notebooks c1964-1976; 'ideas' diaries; drafts for lectures and papers (not all published) c1959-c1976; teaching material, in particular for a course on the 'Social Impact of the Biosciences' which started in 1973, with which McClare had been closely involved; a set of McClare's publications including his major papers on bioenergetics and the correspondence arising; correspondence, 1964-1976 (mainly early 1970s), includes letters exchanged with the philosopher Sir Karl Raimund Popper, who offered considerable encouragement to McClare's early attempts to formulate and publish his scientific ideas, and whose philosophy McClare acknowledged as a profound influence.

This collection contains the papers of Constance Maynard from 1866-1935. It comprises diaries of a varying nature relating to all aspects of the life of Constance Maynard including her Greenbook diaries 1866-1935 - of her emotions, thoughts, extracts from letters, sermons and texts; her Diaries 1871-1913 - detailing weekly activities and events of both a personal and work nature; her Sundial Diaries 1911-1935 - recording the search for both cottages, the Sundial, Little Bookham and the Sundial, Gerrard's Cross, and subsequently details of life in retirement such as accounts of her visitors, visits made, community work and works read and written; her Travel Diaries, 1868-1926 - of her college vacations, holidays, tours and visits, detailing companions and places visited with some photographs, maps and drawings; Diaries regarding Effie [Stephanë Anthon] 1887-1915 - detailing the life, character and relationship with Effie [Stephanë Anthon] from the arrangement of her adoption until her death; the Autobiography written 1915-1933 - covering 1849-1927, divided into seven parts and further into chapters by Constance Maynard, covering all aspects of her life, and including her edited version of a history of the Henry Maynard family, c.1920s, originally written by her Cousin Mary [HM King] 1910, covering 1839-1910; Writings by Constance Maynard 1870-1931 - including indexed anthologies of her own poems, and of poems by other authors, anecdotes told to her, notes on subjects such as Euminides and the Parables, Extracts from Texts, and a Bible with extensive notes added by Constance Maynard; Writings by Family and Friends 1871-1905 - including diaries and notebooks of Catherine Firth, Dora Maynard and Mabel Prideaux; and Personal Memorabilia, 1868-1913 - including her Girton College Degree Certificate, a life painting of Limpsfield, a book presented to her by Westfield College on her retirement and a life painting of The Sundial, Little Bookham.

Louisa Martindale collection, 1872-1964. The collection consists of Section A: a little personal correspondence, papers, articles, speeches and lectures by Louisa Martindale, and some personal material including notes on the glaucoma which eventually blinded her, 1872-1960; and Section B: papers concerning the Medical Women's International Association (founded 1919) of which Miss Martindale was President from 1937 to 1947. As well as her own correspondence in this capacity, 1937-1946, there is one file of the correspondence of Mme Montreuil-Strauss, Secretary of the Medical Women's International Association at his period. (Louisa Martindale destroyed the vast bulk of her case records at the time of her retirement from practice around 1950, those remaining were destroyed by her executors after her death).

Letter to Eva Manes from Mrs Reichardt, former friend of the Manes family, 1957. Mrs Reichardt bought the Manes' grand piano for RM 1000 and lived in the same house as Philip Manes and his wife and was a close friend. She writes about arrangements for payment for the piano, about Manes' problems, and also describes her own unhappy fate during the last years of the war and after. She describes the last days before her family's deportation.

Papers of William Maiden, 1812-1824, comprising a cutting from the National Register containing a letter to the editor from T Paxton, on 'Mr Tipple's Extraordinary Case', 26 Jul 1812; a copy of the second edition (1813) of the original publication by Maiden titled An Account of a Case of Recovery after an Extraordinary Accident, by which the shaft of a chaise had been forced through the thorax. The label on the front was written by Sir Richard Owen. Including an autograph letter from William Clift to William Maiden, 18 Feb 1824 and an original drawing by William Clift; draft title pages for the re-publication of the Shaft Case by William Maiden, including notes on Mr Tipple's health for the 10 years following the accident, and an account of the post-mortem; manuscript drafts for the introduction of the re-publication of the case; manuscript containing notes on Tipple's health after the accident. Letters to Margaret Mackintosh, found during renovations at a dilapidated Victorian house in Ealing. There are ninety two letters in all: thirteen from Willoughby, February 1869-August 1872 and January-March 1877; thirteen from James, July 1871-March 1876; six from Ethel, May 1874-early 1877; six from Mary Anne, May 1874-January 1877; six from members of the Holmden family, June 1871-December 1877; one from Mrs. Mackintosh's brother, Alex Macpherson, undated; four from her friends the MacIrvines, September 1874-December 1876, and thirty three from various other friends.

There are also four letters to Willoughby from his uncle Alex, brother and sister-in-law; one to Mary Anne from an unnamed woman friend; one, almost undecipherable, to MA; one to a Mrs. Brodie from a Miss Paul; one to a Mrs. Ferguson from Alex Macpherson; one to "dearest Lucy", unsigned, and one which has neither beginning nor end.

Apart from the letters there is a certain amount of miscellanea: a dressmakers bill; a list of subscribers to a good cause; two prescriptions (Mrs. Mackintosh was troubled by a persistant cough, and Willoughby by asthma); a wedding invitation; a "short account of Miss Macready's last illness and death written by her nurse"; two manuscript verses, one a copy of "Work for the night is coming ...." and the other a long piece of doggerel extolling the virtues and recording the passing of little Nellie, aged about three; and finally two faded photographs, one of a bearded man in Victorian dress and the other of a younger man in an academic gown.
