Reports, diaries, memoirs, photographs and memorabilia given to the Royal Army Medical Corps Museum and Library by former officers and men of the Corps. Some date back to Marlborough's campaigns of the late 17th century; there is also material relating to the continuing European and Imperial conflicts of the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Crimean War (1854-1856), the Boer War and the Balkan conflicts of the early 20th century, the two World Wars, the Korean War and other smaller conflicts thereafter.

Papers of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH). The genesis of ASH is illustrated in Fletcher's papers (section Q), arising out of his work on the Royal College of Physicians smoking reports. There is a full run of Committee minutes from 1971 onwards (section B). The bulk of the files are those of the Director, associated with all aspects of ASH's campaigning and administrative work. These overlap to some extent with the files of the Project Officer (section P), which are concerned with various specific campaigns, especially about smoking in the workplace and in public places. Published papers, leaflets, posters and booklets are to be found in files throughout the archive, but section T consists of publications which were filed together, apparently transferred from the ASH library.

These records contain material dealing with all aspects of County Medical Officers' work. The broad categories are: minutes, 1902-1907 and 1918-1974; correspondence, 1939-1974; plus a few photographs and miscellaneous items, 1905-1972.

Among the papers are several boxes of records generated by Dr Ramage's role as Association of County Medical Officers of Health representative on the Public Health and Housing (subsequently Health and Welfare) Committee of the County Councils Association. These consist of minutes and other circulated papers and subject files of correspondence, etc. As these records are not duplicated in the holdings of the Association of County Councils (formerly the County Councils Association) they have been retained as of considerable interest on local government health matters.

Tapes and transcripts of interviews conducted in 1988 by Sam Sussman with three Nottingham psychiatrists (A.D. Douglas, E.D. Oram and A. Minto). Mr. Sussman's intention had been to produce a history of psychiatric treatment in the U.K. through the eyes of its practitioners similar to the one he had already produced on Canada; copies of this work (Pioneers of Mental Health and Social Change by Djuwe Joe Blom and Sam Sussman, Third Eye, London Canada, 1989) are also included in this collection. A.D. Douglas and E.D. Oram of Saxondale Hospital were interviewed first; the recordings were typed up and subsequently corrected and slightly amended, evidently in preparation for the publication. The interviewees discuss their training and experiences as psychiatrists and the changes in the profession from the 1940's and 1950's. The Wellcome Library subsequently received cassettes of those interviews, as well as a cassette and transcript of a similar interview with Dr Alfred Minto of Nottingham.

Foundation Papers: Papers of the Association of Medical Officers of Asylums and Hospitals for the Insane (the first predecessor body of the College); Circulars received by Dr Jones of Chester announcing the preliminary meeting of the Association, with minutes of the preliminary, first and second meetings, 1841 and 1842. Announcements of Association meetings in the 1850s and 1860s; report of the Special Committee to consider the Government's Bills for the Amendment of the Laws relating to the Care and Treatment of the Insane, 1859.

Minutes and related papers: on the foundation of the Association of Medical Officers of Asylums and Hospitals for the Insane, 1841 and minutes of meetings, 1841-54, excluding 1845, 1846, 1848, 1849 and 1853 when there were no meetings. Annual meeting minutes have been abstracted onto a Meetings Database. The database can be accessed from the College Library online catalogue. There are no manuscript minutes after 1854 as the Journal of Mental Science was started in that year and the minutes printed in the journal became the official record. Financial information contained in the minutes was also considered the official record and there are no separate financial papers.

Council minutes, 1887-November 1971: with a few supporting papers, e.g. agenda. An acting sub-committee (also referred to as the managing committee) was appointed at the 1856 annual meeting and there are references to council meetings in the 1860s but no minutes before 1887 have been found. There are some omissions after 1887, especially in the early years but it is not clear if this was because there was no meeting or because no minutes were taken. Council minutes 1887-1971 have been abstracted onto the Meetings Database.

Mental Nursing Papers

The Nursing Certificates: The Certificate of Proficiency in Mental Nursing was founded at the Medico-Psychological Association Annual Meeting in 1890 and until 1921 was the only recognised qualification in mental nursing. A separate certificate in Mental Deficiency Nursing was instituted in 1919 and a short-lived Occupational Therapy Certificate was introduced in 1939. After negotiations with the General Nursing Council, the examinations for these certificates were discontinued, the last being held in 1951.

The collection also contains a copy of Ana Olos' (Psycho)analytical approach to a case of reading therapy, Hungarian Journal of English and American Studies 4.1-2 1998.

Letters sent from Iris Murdoch to French author and poet Raymond Queneau, dating from 1946 to 1975. Iris met Queneau while doing war work with the UNRRA, and enjoyed a regular correspondence with him. She claimed that she owed much of her writing to her friendship with Queneau, and dedicated her first novel 'Under the Net' to him. The letters cover a number of topics including the early days of Murdoch's writing and philosophical views, her work with the UNRRA, and early relationships.

The Befriending Project contains the patient records of those participating in the randomised control trial, 1991-1995; most comprise two files per respondent; one baseline and one following-up a year later.

These files comprise the majority of the collection (14 boxes), most containing rating schedule crisis support reports, self assessment questionnaires and forms filled in by interviewers. These files may include assessment forms concerning parental care in childhood, physical/sexual abuse in childhood, institutional stay in childhood, coping records, fixed demographic information, difficulty schedules, life events schedules, work, past experience of former husband/cohabitee, checklist of present state examination symptoms, change point record for psychiatric disorder and a follow up evaluations summarising the patient's experiences.

The remainder of the collection (1 box), comprises information about the questions posed to participants and how these questions should be phrased; the corresponding rating schedules completed for each participant, potential for befriending and data for the relationship between the befriended woman and her matched volunteer.

The records of the King's College London Institute of Psychiatry Camberwell Register comprise record and index cards of psychiatric patients, data collection parameters and instruction literature, and related notes and correspondence, [1965-1985]. Half the collection in volume terms consists of record cards of patients containing personal information, dates and details of admission, diagnosis and treatment, with some background comments (boxes 1-31). These are arranged in a numerical sequence that correlates roughly to the date upon which a new patient entered the study. The vast majority of these date from the 1970s. An alphabetical index card system and index book are available to trace the names of individual patients (boxes 32-43). The remainder of the collection (boxes 44-74) comprises questionnaires of some psychiatric patients engaged in the study [1964-1985]; Umatic and VHS video tapes of interviews with psychiatric patients and sufferers of depression, with some interviews with triplet children, 1979-1992; copies of the death certificates of psychiatric patients in the study, [1975-1995]; notes, correspondence, user manuals and trial information relating to the collection of data in the project, including computer databases and user manuals of programs associated with the Register, [1964-1985]; yearly progress reports of the project, 1964-1968; census and population statistics of the Camberwell study area, including street names and indexes, [1964-1985]; data and published material on similar epidemiological studies, principally at Worcester and Cardiff, 1970-1985; secondary literature on the methodology of case registers, 1968-1981.

The papers of William Lishman, [1980-1997], comprising material relating to 3rd edition of Organic Psychiatry, an interview with Lishman and papers relating to a training pack on neuropsychiatry. The collection includes inserts, galley proofs and a copy of the 2nd edition of Organic Psychiatry all used in Lishman's rewriting for the 3rd edition of Organic Psychiatry, published in 1997 with several drafts of a section on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), the largest addition to the 3rd edition. Also includes interview with Lishman on his life and career and papers relating to the Neuropsychiatry training pack including the pack itself and papers of its writer, Dr Steven Church, relating to its creation.

Papers of John Gunn, 1926-2002, including extensive correspondence, notes, memoranda, funding applications, lecture presentations and press cuttings. The collection includes: files concerning the administration of the Institute of Psychiatry and its Department of Forensic Psychiatry, 1975-2000 (including policy, planning, funding, assessments and staffing), and the running of the Denis Hill Unit forensic in-patient service, Bethlem Royal Hospital, 1985-1998; published articles, book, chapters and book reviews by Gunn, 1966-2001, on topics including epilepsy, aggression, sex offenders, mental health legislation and suicide prevention in prison; research and research applications, 1966-2001, on topics including epileptic offenders, violence, and the discharge and subsequent care of Special Hospital patients; psychiatric questionnaires and assessments, 1967-1988; files relating to the Home Office, chiefly 1966-2000, and relating to the treatment of mentally disordered offenders, also copy medical evidence given to the Wolfenden Committee on Homosexual Offences and Prostitution, 1954, and papers relating to the May enquiry, 1989-1992, into the convictions for IRA bombings in Guildford and Woolwich, 1974.

The collection consists of working papers relating to Buchanan's professional career as a forensic psychiatrist in the UK, [1984]-2001, chiefly research papers relating to the Special Hospitals Service Authority and psychiatric reports relating to Maudsley Hospital patients.
Section 1 comprises papers arising from the daily administrative operations of Maudsley Hospital London. Section 2 contains research notes, questionnaires and criminal record 'multiple enquiry forms' produced from the Home Office Offenders Index. This material relates to an unpublished study conducted by Buchanan from 1992-1995 of discharged special hospital patients convicted of violent re-offences. The findings, intended to inform the decision making of those entrusted with the care of special hospital patients, were funded by the Special Hospitals Service Authority. There are also confidential psychiatric reports (see ref 3/1 to 3/6), produced by forensic psychiatrists at Maudsley Hospital, London. The reports evaluate an individual's competency to stand trial, defences based on mental diseases or defects (for instance the "insanity" defence), and sentencing recommendations. Section 4 contains questionnaires relating to a project funded by the John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation focused on developing the Maudsley Assessment of Delusions Schedule to provide a more accurate and effective way of assessing patient's delusions. Section 5 consists of papers relating a psychiatric case assessed by Buchanan in his capacity as a member of the Serious Untoward Incident Panel of the Hounslow and Spelthorne Community and Mental Health NHS Trust. The collection also includes photocopies of articles from medical publications and on-line resources compiled by Buchanan which relate to the ethical connotations of patient confidentiality in connection with medical trials and research (see ref 6/1).

The records of the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) at King's College London Institute of Psychiatry are made up of editorial committee papers, data tables, statistical data, notes of meetings and other correspondence and papers, 1986-1995. These include correspondence with Geoff Der of the Social Psychiatry Unit at the Institute, 1988-1995; editorial committee papers, 1986-1994; notes on international meetings arranged by Geoff Der relating to SCAN, 1989; field trial data in hard copy and floppy disks, [1989]; training manuals, reviews of statistics and other supporting literature, 1987-1991.

Papers reflecting a series of studies of twins utilising the Maudsley Twin Register, 1932-1999, reflecting the respective impacts of genetics and environment on a range of psychotic disorders, notably schizophrenia. Records include patient files/notes, 1932-1998; patient study profiles arising from tests, questionnaires and comments, 1948-1998; administrative records relating to funding applications to the Medical Record Council, ethical approval, and recruitment of subjects, 1948-1998. Studies include Opposite Sex Twin Study, Kendall Depressives Twin Study, Multiple Psychotic Families Twin Study, Maudsley Adult Twins Study, Anxious Twins Series, Personality Disorder Twin Study, Separated Twin Study, Psychotic Twin Studies, and the Gottesman and Shields series of studies on schizophrenia.
