The Office of Remembrancer was instituted in 1571. The traditional role is as the channel of communications between the City of London on the one hand and the Sovereign, Royal Household and Parliament on the other. The Remembrancer is also the City's Ceremonial Officer and Chief of Protocol.

The Remembrancer's department at the City of London is broken into three distinct branches of work - parliamentary, ceremonial and private events. The parliamentary office is responsible for looking after the City of London's interests in Parliament with regard to all public legislation, while the ceremonial office's objectives are to enable the Lord Mayor and City of London to welcome high profile visitors both domestically and internationally. Finally, the private events team co-ordinate the hiring of the Guildhall for private banquets, receptions or conferences.

Records of the Remembrancer's Department, Corporation of London, relating to ceremonials, including papers relating to the organisation of various ceremonies and entertainments, 1814-2000; entertainment cards, entertainment books and day books, all containing examples of invitation cards, envelopes, ball, concert and dance programmes, tickets, menus, instructions to coach men, covering letters, orders of procession, news cuttings, speeches for Lord Mayor's Day and other ceremonies, arranged by ceremony, 1837-2000; entertainments letter books, 1883-1977 and ceremonial books, 1789-1991; papers relating to the organisation and events of Lord Mayor's Day and its associated ceremonies including correspondence from the Remembrancer's department relating to the arrangements for the Procession, Banquet, and associated ceremonies, Banquet Invitation cards, Menu Cards, Procession programmes, photographs, speeches, addresses, and reports to and by various committees, 1698-1991; minutes of the Lord Mayor and Sheriff's Committee for Lord Mayor's Days, 1960-1977; tickets and invitations to Lord Mayor's Day events, 1791-1970; ticket registers, listing invitees, 1881-1979; extracts, historical notes and articles relating to Lord Mayor's Day, 1698-1987; order of the Court of Aldermen for the punishment of rude and disorderly persons who throw stones, filth and other injurious things about the streets during the procession to and from Westminster on Lord Mayor's Day, 1701; route of procession, 1833-1923; papers relating to the Lord Mayor's Banquet, 1634-2002, including bills and accounts, orders for the correct reception of the monarch and souvenir programmes.
