Sir William Smith, citizen and member of the Company of Waxchandler, was sheriff 1741-42 and alderman for Aldgate Ward 1747-52.

These items were transferred to Guildhall Library via the British Records Association and were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in 1952. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

Estate and other papers left by and relating to Sir William Smith and his successors. The papers relate to properties in the City of London and to the offices of corn meter and coal meter.
