Papers of Jacques Vivier, 1597-1691, comprising a manuscript mostly written by Vivier (probably a professional scribe), titled Explanation of the treatises of Guidon given by M. Seguin, doctor of medicine and lecturer in surgery at Paris, containing notes of lectures given by Dr Pierre Seguin, on Guido de Cauliaco's Chirurgia, and Taganet's Institution due Chirurgia.

The correspondence, papers and diaries of Sir Charles Blagden. Blagden's papers are interesting on several levels, generally for his close contact with European men of learning, and his relationship with Sir Joseph Banks. Blagden's professional researches are represented by medical notes in the boxed sequence. These are grouped with papers on other subject interests, including linguistics, e.g. a draft Tahitian-English dictionary, compiled from conversations with Omai, whom Blagden inoculated after Omai's voyage to England with James Cook. Blagden's interest in antiquities and travel is documented by diary entries, as is his intercourse with fellow scientists, particularly those associated with the founding of the Royal Institution.

In addition to this there are some writings upon manipulative treatment itself and related issues (MSS.2001, 2006-2007), a syllabus of lectures to be delivered by Cyriax at the Central Institute for Swedish Gymnastics (MS.6054), writings on massage by authors other than Cyriax (MSS.6056-6059) and an acknowledgement by the Museum of Practical Geology for specimens presented by another member of the Cyriax family (MS.6060).

'Prophilactique et thérapeutique'. This MS. appears to be a précis of Nicolas François Rougnon de Magny's 'Traité d'hygiène et médecine pratique', published in 1799, and to have been taken from his own MS. Produced in Besançon.

These papers comprise the manuscript collection of F[rederick] Bacon Frank (1827-1911). They include a medieval medical miscellany (MS.550), material by or relating to the 17th century Yorkshire physician Nathaniel Johnston (MSS.3083-3086 and 6080), and some Bacon family administrative documents (MS.6079). One item relating to Nathaniel Johnston that did not form part of the Bacon Frank collection has been catalogued with it for convenience (MS.3086).

Hans Epstein papers including on anaesthesia and inhalers, 1906-2002. Within Epstein's papers is a large amount of correspondence with work colleagues and companies employed to manufacture his inhalers. Occassionally, Epstein kept copies of the out letters he sent, however, their retention appears to be more of a random occurance than one based on a considered filing scheme. The correspondence covers a wide range of topics (usually related to the field of anaesthesia) which include Epstein giving advice on certain subjects, being invited to lecture at specific events, discussing inhaler designs and test result data (of both his own products and those of others). Also existing is a significant amount of correspondence on various aspects of the book Epstein co-wrote, Physics for the Anaesthetist. Correspondence related to Epstein's own education is also included.

Also relating to Epstein's research and development activities are a number of laboratory notebooks and loose papers which record, amongst other things test results of various anaesthetic inhalers and anaesthetic gases. Epstein also kept notebooks in which he wrote out general maths, physics and chemical equations and formula, often citing who discovered the relevent information/data and when.

Amongst the papers are large amounts of published material. The majority are journal articles, written by third parties, which covered current and historical developments in anaesthesia or focussed on the development of specific anaesthesia apparatus. Epstein also compiled a set of research papers, journal articles and information on the specific subject of the history of resuscitation.

The collection also includes material related to World and European Congresses of Anaesthesiologists attended by Epstein, including invitations, travel arrangements and congress itineries. Epstein also retained invitations to lecture and lecture notes as well as details (invoices) of a variety of work-related expenses incurred during his career.

Other papers include those related to Epstein's work with Penlon, a medical apparatus manufacturer as well as papers related to Sir Robert Macintosh (Epstein's boss at Nuffield). The Penlon section includes correspondence between Epstein and Penlon and inhaler test data from tests conducted by Epstein for Penlon. The Macintosh section includes documents concerning Sir Robert's 90th birthday and his obituary.

Papers of Helena Wright including correspondence, papers and photographs: personal and re family planning movement, 1920s-1970s, and alternative medicine, 1970s.

The Ronald MacKeith papers, 1949-1998, include not only MacKeith's own research papers, mainly comprised of reports and published articles, but material relating to the Medical Education Information Unit of The Spastics Society, which he was director of and intimately involved in developing. These files predominately relate to the study groups MacKeith established (programmes, recorders' summaries, typescripts of papers presented and photographs) and Medical Advisory Council and Editorial Board (minutes, memorandum, correspondence). There are also a small number of informational booklets from other medical societies and research material from Martin Bax, who worked closely with MacKeith and succeeded him as senior editor.

Papers of Fred Stratton, 1959-2003. Section A, Biographical, is very slight. It presents obituaries of Stratton, his curriculum vitae and list of publications. Section B, Research, is not extensive. There is some general and miscellaneous material, including schemes for Medical Research Council trials from 1978, a little documentation of research work of colleagues C.M. Giles and A.H. Merry, and material relating to a proposed private/public cooperation on blood preservation. There are subsections relating to Stratton's interest in the rare condition Angioneurotic Oedema, and to the Working Party on the Standardisation of Antiglobulin Reagents, a joint working party of the International Society of Blood Transfusion and the International Centre for Standardization in Haematology. There is a short sequence of correspondence, chiefly relating to haematology, and non-textual material, principally slides but also including a photograph, marked 'Very valuable' of 'Haemolysing anti P'.

Section C, Lectures and publications, is the largest in the collection. It comprises principally a sequence of drafts 1959-1986, mostly relating to public and invitation lectures delivered worldwide - Stratton travelled widely - on blood transfusion topics. The bulk of the drafts date from the 1970s and 1980s. In preparing a lecture or paper Stratton corrected and revised his drafts extensively and the material bears witness to the care he took. The section includes some illustrative material, chiefly for slides for lectures, and offprints of some of Stratton's publications.

Section D, British Blood Transfusion Society, covers the period 1981-1991. It offers significant documentation of the conception and establishment of the BBTS - membership, constitution, funding, relations with other bodies - and its early days during Stratton's inaugural Presidency, including administrative papers, organisation of meetings, speeches given by Stratton at BBTS occasions and awards made. Section E, Visits and conferences, is a presentation of a little material relating to visits made and conferences attended. The range and frequency of Stratton's travel is better evidenced in section C; many of his lectures are noted as being delivered to overseas audiences or at international conferences. There is also an index of correspondents.

The records cover the period 1976-1993, although the majority of the records date from 1985-1993. Many sections of the archive are complete - minutes of the Executive Committee, 1985-1993; annual reports, 1986-1993 and newsletters, 1986-1993. The archive also contains a great deal of information relating to other cancer organisations, both in this country and abroad.

The archive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy provides a comprehensive record of its activities and development, dating back to its foundation - with two press cuttings books of the 1894 'massage scandals' (P.1), and Council minutes from 1894 onwards (B.1). The core of the collection is formed by complete runs of minute books for the various committees. There are no committee working papers or correspondence files other than those bound with the minutes. Papers relating to education and examination including minutes for all the major committees and sub-committees (C.1), and material relating to the actual administration of examinations: syllabuses, examination papers, result books and reports (C.2). Records relating to membership including membership registers 1895-1975, published lists of members 1920-1986 and minutes and registers of the fund and prize committees 1949-1957 (D). Records of some branches and special interest groups within the CSP can be found in section J.

Material relating to protecting and improving the status of its members within the medical profession can be found in section F, especially in connection with the debates on the place of physiotherapy within the NHS - training, conditions of service and its existence as a profession distinct from others such as occupational therapy. These topics are also discussed in publications (N). Other publications illustrate specific physiotherapy and lifting techniques and advertise physiotherapy as a career. Section P contains 'historical' material relating to the early years of the Society: the 'massage scandal' press cuttings, and correspondence re the Harley Institute massage school 1912-1914. Section P also contains material relating to the writing of the Society's commissioned histories, and personal papers and reminiscences, including a group of papers and photographs relating to Olive Guthrie-Smith and the Swedish Institute, (later St Mary's Hospital School of Physiotherapy), 1904-1939. There is a substantial photograph collection (Q.1), dating from 1900-1980, illustrating many aspects of the Society's work as well as specific treatments and hospital departments. There are also nine films (Q.5), 1942-1976, illustrating techniques, training and events; sound recordings (Q.3); and a series of tapes of oral history interviews recorded in 1992 (Q.4).

The initial deposit, sections A-K, consists mainly of correspondence and associated papers (leaflets, memoranda, extracts from minutes, etc.). There are two main series of correspondence: 'People' and 'General' and some other distinct smaller series such as 'Branches and other Societies'. The internal arrangement of these files is normally chronological, with a few exceptions (usually an alphabetical arrangement). There are also lecturers' report sheets, publications, slides, posters, charts, and photographs, mainly but not exclusively in Section G: Propaganda and Publicity. There is a set of Annual Reports and related material 1908-1979 (Section A). Under the will of Dr. Marie Stopes the Eugenics Society was left her birth control clinic, books from her library and certain emoluments. Three boxes of her correspondence and some miscellanea, were assigned to section K. In 1988 minute books and the Society's extensive collection of press cuttings plus some financial records were added as GB0120 SA/EUG/L-N.

Records of the Middlesex County Council Civil Defence Department comprising plans drawn up by the local authorities in Middlesex in the period 1937-1940. They show, in varying degree of detail, the locations of first aid posts; shelters; repair, rescue and demolition posts; distribution depots; respirator stores; trenches; wardens sectors; decontamination centres; police centres; police stations; hospitals; fire stations. Also plans of London Region Civil Defence boundaries, 1948-1965.

Cassette tape and transcript of an interview, 1993, with Professor Kurt Hellman, Professor Gerald Westbury and Dr Kenneth Newton, former colleagues of Sir Stanford Cade at Westminster Hospital. Their reminiscences cover the closure of the radiotherapy department at Westminster and the re-organisation of the National Health Service in the 1980s, as well as their early years and the work of cancer therapy under Cade.

Memoir of Brenda Morrison and other papers including memoir entitled ''Reminiscences of a woman doctor, 1933-1956', in which she describes developments in paediatrics during that period and also various other contemporary medical developments such as blood transfusion, plastic surgery, antibiotics and chemotherapy; C.V. 1998; reprints of publications by Dr Morrison, 1945-1957 (incomplete set) and memoir of her later life 'Training and Practice in Psychoanalysis 1956-1996' .

'Journal of a Red Cross VAD member on Special Service during the Great War' (in Malta), 1915-1916. The writer, Rosa Louise Hunt, describes her service with the Voluntary Aid Detachment from 25 Nov 1915 until 5 Mar 1916, in Malta, beginning with the news that she was being posted to a military hospital abroad, but breaking off abruptly while she was still in Malta.

These manuscripts comprise two copies of a work on the theory and extensive therapeutic uses of Peruvian balsam, probably produced in Mexico in the second half of the 18th century.

The items in the collection span the work of the Junta during the 1797-1798 smallpox epidemic, comprising a circular announcing the setting up in late 1797 of local charitable societies to be co-ordinated by the Junta, and the Junta's concluding report of early 1798.

The archive spans Browne's career from school onwards, but the core series of records focus on his work as a medical missionary at the BMS hospital in Yakusu, Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). Section B comprises records for the period 1938-1958, including registers of leprosy sufferers, case records and photograph albums documenting various symptoms. Section K contains further photographs (mainly clinical) for the period 1938-1977, the most important series of which dates from Browne's time at the Baptist Mission Hospital and comprises over 900 negatives and prints together with supporting documentation, 1954-1958.

Section C contains a small number of files compiled by Browne during his research into leprosy, yaws, onchocerciasis and ainhum, 1946-1983. Particularly notable are the files on the anti-leprosy drug B663 (now known as clofazimine), into the use of which Browne conducted pioneering studies whilst director of the Leprosy Research Unit, Uzuakoli, Eastern Nigeria, 1959-1966.The remaining records comprise personal and biographical material, 1923-1985 (section A); general subject files containing correspondence, reprints etc. on a wide variety of topics, 1948-1986 (section D); writings by Browne, 1935-1985 (section E); records of Browne's involvement with the International Leprosy Association, 1909-1985 (section F) and various other organisations, 1959-1986 (section G); records on foreign visits, 1965-1985 (section H); and a few files on religious matters, 1959-1984 (section J).

Cheadle's papers, 1877-1934, include his notes on the use of anti-scorbutic treatment for scurvy in young children, includes notes of six cases, with temperature charts, 1877-88. Also includes explanatory notes from J.F. Poynton, 1910; Original paintings and photograph of infantile scurvy by Cheadle, from the cases of Sir Thomas Barlow, to accompany Cheadle's original records of the cases, [1877-79], with letter presenting paintings to the College from Poynton, 1934.

Latham's papers, c.1797-1811, include his notebooks on food and digestion, materia medica and therapeutics, c.1797-1811, and his unpublished dissertation on asthma, in his hand, c. 1810.

Latham's papers, 1838-1871, include his casebook, 1838-39, and his lectures on fever and the pulse, in his hand, 1871.

The collection represents the contacts through two centuries of a group of men and women of high distinction ramifying through the medical, legal and literary worlds. It forms a not unimportant fund of minor historical material, comprising more than a thousand letters from nearly five hundred writers.

The autograph letters are mounted in 10 large volumes: -

1. Letterbook of John Arbuthnot (1667-1735). The most interesting letters are those of Pope and Swift and their circle written in 1714 when the Queen's death involved the destruction of their political hopes. Letterbook of William Hunter (1719-1783). It includes letters from Tobias Smollett the novelist, from Dr. Johnson thanking Hunter for presenting his book to the King, and from Edward Gibbon 'proposing himself the pleasure of attending some of Dr. Hunter's Anatomical lectures.'

2. Hunter and Baillie family letters and reminiscences, including the letters written by John to William Hunter from active service in 1761-62; poems by Sophia Baillie, Jenner family letters.

   3. Letters to Matthew Baillie from the Royal Princesses. Letters of the Bentham family, including three from Jeremy Bentham. Autograph letter collection includes letters from Thomas Carlyle and Charles Dickens. 1735 - 1845

3. Denman family collection; autographs collections of Lady Bell and Dr. William Whewell; letters of John Baron, Edward Jenner's biographer; fragment of unpublished music by Mozart; letters from Joanna Baillie's friends including c.1782-1877

9. Princess Mary's letters to Baillie concerning the illness of Princess Amelia, Anne Hunter's autograph poems, libretto of Haydn's Creation; account of death of Princess Charlotte.

   The Hunter Baillie collection comprises also a number of manuscript books, the oldest of which is a commonplace book of the early eighteenth century, giving details of family history of the Hunters. Matthew Baillie's notebooks include: -

Journal of a tour in Europe in 1788 and A short memoir of my life, 1818. 'Some brief observations from my own experience upon a considerable number of diseases', in two volumes. n.d. With these are his casebooks, fee-books and other professional notes, including details of his attendance on King George III. Baillie records that his total annual fees mounted from £121 in 1792 to £9,995 in 1815.

Papers relating to the Albucasis De Chirurgica (Surgery of Albucasis or Al-Zahravi), 1769, comprising 5 volumes of manuscript translations from Arabic into Latin, covering various aspects of surgery including general surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, urology and orthopaedic surgery.

Papers of E Duval, 1924, comprising 2 volumes titled MS Extracts on Teeth. E. Duval. Vol. I. 1924, and MS Extracts on Teeth. E. Duval. Vol II. 1924. Containing notes on various aspects of teeth and dentistry such as dental diseases and treatments; instrument and tooth makers; dental and odontological societies; and the obituaries of dentists and dental surgeons. The extracts are mostly taken from journals and books of the mid to late 19th century.

Papers of John Sagittary, c 1690, comprising a manuscript volume in Latin titled De Generatione Calculi, a treatise on stone (for instance, a gall stone or kidney stone).

Papers of Douglas Wilson, 1908-1919, comprising a volume of notes taken at Practical Pharmacy lectures by Professor Ralph Stockman and Dr Charteris, including prescriptions and notes on chemicals and drugs, 1908-1919; and 3 volumes of notes taken at Pathology lectures by Professor Robert Muir, 1909-1910.
