In 1894-1895 Burroughs Wellcome and Co. began to produce antitoxin in central London under supervision of T J Bokenham in a laboratory administered directly from firm's headquarters in Snow Hill.

In 1897 Bokenham's successor, Walter Dowson, was appointed Director perhaps indicating that Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories (WPRL) were now regarded as a separate entity.

In 1902 Henry Wellcome directed that both chemical and physiological research laboratories should be considered as separate from the business.

In 1924 the establishment of The Wellcome Foundation Ltd which formally drew together for the first time, the company and the research laboratories and museums.

Papers of the Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories (WPRL), 1903-1927, comprising publications including handbooks of early information and volumes of staff reprints, and a microfilm copy of a file relating to the history of the Laboratories.

The collection is divided into sections as follows: WA/PRL/PB PUBLICATIONS 1903-1927; WA/PRL/Gen General publications 1903-1927; WA/PRL/PB/Sta Staff reprints 1903-1911; WA/PRL/Sta/A Bound volumes, staff reprints 1903-1911; WA/PRL/PB/Sta/A.1 Publications of the WPRL 1-25 1903-1909; WA/PRL/PB/Sta/A.2 Publications of the WPRL 26-50 1909-1911.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.

Photocopies/photographs/microfilm are supplied for private research only at the Archivist's discretion. Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances.
