Correspondence, 1935-1936 and 1940-1943, between Professor Lizzie Susan Stebbing and Ann Hook, wife of Professor Sidney Hook who was Professor of Philosophy at New York University, mainly on personal matters, but also including details of Stebbing's work as a Professor of Philosophy at Bedford College, University of London, her thoughts on contemporary events in Europe and America, and remarks relating to her failing health. Signed copy of Thinking to some purpose (Penguin Books, Harmondsworth, 1939), given by Stebbing to Norah McNaulty, Registrar of Bedford College, including a review from the Times Literary Supplement, 4 Aug 1939, and a note from Stebbing.

Professor Spurgeon's papers comprise mainly notes, 1895-1912, taken at lectures attended as an undergraduate and afterwards, and teaching notes and course syllabuses, 1901-1927, relating to lectures given at Bedford College and elsewhere, including for London County Council evening classes. She kept two volumes of notes on the students she taught at Bedford College, and one letter survives (PP7/1/3/8) expressing appreciation for her teaching. There are papers relating to her research in English literature, including on Chaucer, mysticism, Ruskin, Shakespeare and Keats, [c.1900]-1933, and published copies of her works, 1901-1930, some with annotations. She collected newspaper cuttings on literature and her own work, and on current affairs, including feminism and women's suffrage and the First World War. There are papers relating to her work on international exchange of information about education, particularly for women, including her presidency of the International Federation of University Women, 1920-1924, and the British Federation's establishment of Crosby Hall International Hall of Residence, 1921-1929. There is one file of letters, cards and notes found in her books, 1889-1936, including letters from and to Frederick James Furnivall, founder of the Early English Text Society, Chaucer Society, Ballad Society, New Shakespeare Society, etc, and letters and cards from Edmund Gosse, Emile Legouis, Professor of English Literature at the Sorbonne, and George Heynes Radford (later Sir George Radford, Labour M.P. for East Islington). Two files of letters from CS to her aunt Mrs E. Harvey 1898-9, 1905-1914, were added to the papers in 1964. There is also a typed copy of Professor Spurgeon's will and bequest to Bedford College, 1936.

The material in Dorothy Reich's personal papers covers the years from 1892 to 1981, although the majority relates to the 1950s and 1960s. Her papers include a great deal of material created by Professor Edna Purdie, her teacher and colleague. This is partly due to the fact that on Purdie's death in 1968, Reich took over the editing of 'A History of German Literature' by J.G. Robertson who had also been a Professor of German at Bedford College. Reich's papers therefore include a great deal of material relating to the 3rd and 4th editions of the book edited by Purdie. However, the papers also include material created by Purdie which is unrelated to the publication of the book. The material relating to the revisions of 'A History of German Literature' includes Edna Purdie's correspondence with W.I. Lucas, Professor of German at the University of Southampton, who contributed towards the revisions of the book, and Dr Mary Bearne who assisted Purdie with the section on the Early New High German period. There are also letters from the book's publishers, Blackwood and Sons, about the date of publication for the third edition and correspondence in German between Purdie and the German publishers, Vandenhoek & Ruprecht, regarding a translation of the book into German. There is an extensive collection of handwritten notes and typed manuscripts relating to the revision of the book, including annotated copies of previously published editions. There is also material relating to Henry Handel Richardson, which would have also come into Dorothy Reich's possession through Edna Purdie. Henry Handel Richardson was the wife of J.G. Robertson and was a friend of Purdie's. Her real name was Ethel Florence Lindsey Richardson and she was an Australian author. 'Myself When Young' was her autobiography which she was in the process of writing when she died in 1946. The book was finished by her secretary Olga Roncoroni, with the help of Edna Purdie, and published in 1948. The other material relating to Handel Richardson concerns the publication of a book edited by Purdie and Roncoroni entitled 'Henry Handel Richardson; some personal impressions'. The collection includes material relating to Purdie's career at Bedford College, including papers and correspondence relating to both her teaching and research activities, as well as social aspects of her time at the College, such as her membership of the Wine Association. There are also a number of copies of lectures and publications on the subject of German Literature, which are presumed to have been collected by Purdie. There is a small collection of papers that appears to have been created by J.G. Robertson between 1900 and 1930. Cassette copies and transcripts of recordings of unedited interviews assembled, 1972-1974, for the radio series 'Plain Tales from the Raj', including material not included in the broadcast programmes, and comprising c200 hours of material. The 82 subjects interviewed, including men, women, adults and children, lived and worked in India from the late 19th century to Independence (1947) and the interviews cover a wide range of civilian and military experience between 1876 and 1949. Military personnel range from the Commander in Chief of the Army in India to Army privates. Civil servants of various ranks and members of the business and commercial world, for example tea planters, are also included. Women mainly comprise wives and daughters, but also include a few nurses and governesses. The project covered the lives of the British in India and, although the material touches upon the effect of the Raj on India and its indigenous inhabitants, only a small number of Indians and Eurasians were interviewed. Subjects covered include accommodation and living conditions; daily routine; social life and recreation; health and sanitation; the effects of India postings on family life; relations between the British, other Europeans, Indians and Eurasians in social and work environments; events such as riots and earthquakes; the fauna and landscape of India; and political events. Full typescript transcripts (including inaccuracies in some cases) exist for most, but not all, of the recordings.

Papers, articles, texts and lecture notes, c1932-1943, largely undated, of Evangeline Dora Edwards, relating to her work and interest in Chinese language, literature and history. The material reflects her particular interest in the T'ang Dynasty (AD 618-907). Lecture notes cover topics such as T'ang poetry, the history of the early T'ang, the social life of the T'ang Dynasty and secular schools of music founded by Ming Huang (AD 713-752) of the T'ang Dynasty. Also includes a typescript article entitled 'Development of Drama before the T'ang Dynasty' (1933). There are several Chinese texts in the collection, some with English translations.

The College records are only a part of the English Provincial Archive of the Society of the Sacred Heart, which contains a large collection of archival material relating to convents, colleges and training schools founded by the Society. These records include papers of Cannington Priory Church and Convent, [1843-1975]; the convent at Roscrea, Ireland, [1842-1884], the first foundation in the British Isles; the convent at Woldingham, Roehampton, [1842-1992], including material relating to Woldingham School; the convent at West Hill, Wandsworth, 1874-1975, including papers relating to attached schools; the convent in St Charles' Square, 1905-1946, and Roehampton, 1946-1992, including papers relating to attached schools, [1906-1994]; the convent at Hammersmith, [1672-1994], including papers of the attached schools; the convents at Blackheath and Goodrington, [1903-1975], and Leamington, [1913]; the convent at Bonchurch, [1904-1975]; the convent at Tunbridge Wells, [1915-1973], with material relating to the training school; the convent at Oxford, [1902-1972]; the convent at Fenham, Newcastle, [1828-1998], including a history of the site and material concerning the attached schools and St Mary's Training College; and papers relating to small communities at Gateshead, Burnham, Bexhill, Blyth and Southall, [1984-2000]. The Provincial Archive also holds the papers of AMASC (World Association of the Alumnae of the Sacred Heart), NASHE (National Association of the Sacred Heart, England and Wales) and associated groups, 1957-1995.

There is a large collection of photographs relating to all of the above, as well as historical material relating to the Roehampton area, [1724-1995], mainly relating to buildings owned and including plans, deeds, and specifications relating to 'Roehampton House' (now Queen Mary's Hospital) and 'Parkstead' (now Manresa House); historical material relating to Wimbledon and Putney.

The archive consists of papers relating to Cullis' lecture tour of the USA from 1941-1942 on the subject of women's war work in Britain. The archive also includes biographical material such as portrait photographs of Cullis, the order of service for her funeral and press cuttings of obituaries. The archive contains two articles by Cullis on physiology and a publication: 'What British Women are doing in the War'.
