Biografie

The Cripplegate Schools Foundation was constituted by a Board of Education scheme on 30 December 1904 to administer the Red Cross Street Boys' School and Lady Holles School for Girls. A school for 100 boys was first opened in White Cross Street in 1698, later moving to Glovers' Hall and Barbican. In 1709 a plot of land in Red Cross Street was purchased with a bequest from Thomas Moore and a new school was built there. Part of the premises was leased to the trustees of Lady Holles' School, which had been established in 1711 for the education of 50 girls. The Boys' School remained in Red Cross Street until 1864, when it moved to Bridgewater Square. Lady Holles School relocated to Hackney in 1878. Its current premises, at Hampton in Middlesex, opened in 1935.

The Boys' School remained in Red Cross Street until 1864, when it moved to Bridgewater Square. Lady Holles School relocated to Hackney in 1878. Its current premises, at Hampton in Middlesex, opened in 1935.

With the exception of Mss 6473A-B and 35827-9, the records of the Cripplegate Schools Foundation and its predecessors were originally catalogued as part of the archive of the parish of St Giles Cripplegate. Mss 6473A-B and 35827-9 were catalogued under the name Cripplegate Schools Foundation. In 2007, all material was re-catalogued under this name.

These records were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library by the Foundation, by representatives of Lady Eleanor Holles School, and others, in 1951 and later. They were catalogued at various dates by members of Guildhall Library staff. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

The records of the Cripplegate Schools Foundation comprise minutes 1905-69 (Ms 6473-A, 35827); agendas 1915, 1929-32 (Ms 6473B) and financial records 1906-76 (Ms 20089, 35828-9). Ms 20087 includes particulars of the Foundation's constitution with list of meetings c 1951.

Records of the Red Cross Street Boys' School comprise a history of its foundation 1690-1749, which includes a list of pupils 1707-48 (Ms 75A); minutes 1809-1905 and agendas 1842-65 (Mss 6475-6); logbooks 1877-1904 (Ms 6477) and treasurers' accounts 1714-1868 (Ms 7029).

Records of Lady Holles School comprise minutes 1726-1904 (Mss 6473-4), treasurers' ledger and accounts 1710-1803, 1844-79 (Mss 10885, 20082-3). There are also some references to this school in Ms 75A. Mss 9412-3 comprise records relating to properties held by the trustees of the two schools, 1727-1853.

The records have been sorted into an order which reflects divisions between the different functions and operations of the organisation and its administration.

These records are available for public inspection, although records containing personal information may be subject to access restrictions.
