'For it is altogether unavoidable for this Island to escape hunger if it is only to hold out one single winter without being supplied with provisions.'

Papers of Scott Dunbar, [1977-1984], largely comprise letters from Iris Murdoch to Dr Scott Dunbar and copies of his work. Letters from Iris Murdoch to Dunbar raise issues including religion, politics, structuralism, philosophy and also more personal matters including her mother's illness. The collection also includes an itinerary listing a series of ten lectures to be given by Iris Murdoch in October 1982 at the University of Edinburgh, the Gifford Lectureship in Natural Theology entitled 'Metaphysics as a guide to morals', possibly attended by Dunbar and a photocopy of a letter from Scott Dunbar to Murdoch answering a question at length: 'why are gay bars so sad?'.

The collection also contains letters from other individuals to Dunbar including Duncan Averbach, 1989, discussing Dunbar's thesis and the difference between the human being and person; letter from Theodore Brotsis, enclosing a photograph of Theodore, 1986; published works by Dunbar including 'On art, morals, and religion: some reflections on the work of Iris Murdoch', Scott Dunbar, Religious Studies, Vol 14, No 4, 1978; typescript copies of works including 'Alcoholics Anonymous and Alcohol Dependency' Part One and Part Two and handwritten notes, presumably by Dunbar, including notes titled 'IVF and all that' and lecture notes including 'The Iliad Lectures'.

The Befriending Project contains the patient records of those participating in the randomised control trial, 1991-1995; most comprise two files per respondent; one baseline and one following-up a year later.

These files comprise the majority of the collection (14 boxes), most containing rating schedule crisis support reports, self assessment questionnaires and forms filled in by interviewers. These files may include assessment forms concerning parental care in childhood, physical/sexual abuse in childhood, institutional stay in childhood, coping records, fixed demographic information, difficulty schedules, life events schedules, work, past experience of former husband/cohabitee, checklist of present state examination symptoms, change point record for psychiatric disorder and a follow up evaluations summarising the patient's experiences.

The remainder of the collection (1 box), comprises information about the questions posed to participants and how these questions should be phrased; the corresponding rating schedules completed for each participant, potential for befriending and data for the relationship between the befriended woman and her matched volunteer.

Papers reflecting a series of studies of twins utilising the Maudsley Twin Register, 1932-1999, reflecting the respective impacts of genetics and environment on a range of psychotic disorders, notably schizophrenia. Records include patient files/notes, 1932-1998; patient study profiles arising from tests, questionnaires and comments, 1948-1998; administrative records relating to funding applications to the Medical Record Council, ethical approval, and recruitment of subjects, 1948-1998. Heberden's papers, c.1744 - [1784], include his notes on the history and cure of diseases, 1782, thought to be the original manuscript for his Commentaries on the History and Cure of Diseases (1802), and his index of the history of disease, [1784] (date '22 Maii 1784' is written at the end of the volume), containing the notes from which his Commentaries were drawn up; Manuscript of his Goulstonian Lectures, 1749, in Heberden's hand; Index of materia medica containing remedies and their effects compiled by Heberden from his case notes, with additional notes on the opposite pages by his son, William Heberden the younger, 18th century. Of the 389 slaves on board, 16 died. The log gives the daily sick rate and there are brief notes of the cases and treatment.

At the end of the manuscript, Christopher Bowes states it is a "just and true journal" which he then presents to Custom House, at St George, Grenada in 1792. This is witnessed and signed by George Ferguson [Possibly George Ferguson, Governor of Tobago c1781]. The next page of the volume contains a statement signed by George Ferguson, saying that this is a "true copy of the original journal", and is dated September 5th 1792. Therefore it is likely that this manuscript is a copy of the original journal, which was perhaps retained in Grenada.

At the front of the volume is a letter to Arthur Bowes Elliot (grandson of Christopher Bowes) dated 5th October 1911, from Sir Ronald Ross (FRCS) 1857-1932, regarding the contents of the volume, and the diseases the slaves were suffering from.

Papers of Thomas Howitt, 1830-1922, comprising a volume containing notes of lectures by Sir Charles Bell and Herbert Mayo, amongst others, on topics such as teeth, surgery, ovarian diseases, urethra diseases, head injuries, abcesses, and Pleuralgia, c 1830; diary and notes made during a visit to study French hospital practice in Paris, 1832-1833; medical case notes, 1832-1838; recipes for products such as shaving soap and cold cream; a letter from Howitt and J Brockbank to the physicians and surgeons of the Lancaster General Hospital, concerning a patient too poor to pay for medicine; and a letter from Aunt Fanny to Billy, presumably William Howitt Hastings (MRCS 1905), grandson of Thomas Howitt FRCS, 15 Mar 1922, relating to handing over the notebook from her into his care.
