The manuscript includes an allegorical drawing in pen and ink on folio 8.

Manuscript volume containing papers relating to William Wood and the minting of halfpence and farthings for Ireland comprising transcripts of a report of the Committee of the Privy Council of 24 Jul 1724 and the ensuing Order in Council of 6 Aug 1724, both relating to Wood's Irish coinage, with a copy of 'Mr Wood's Proposals'.

Papers of Theresienstadt Bank, 1943-1944, comprise a savings book issued by the bank of the Jewish self-administration of Theresienstadt, which documents the savings accrued by a former inmate, Max Hirschfeld, from June 1943 to August 1944, payment for labour whilst in the camp. The colleciton also includes a letter dated 1 October 1945 from the same to the British military governor, Bielefeld, requesting funds for savings accrued by all surviving Theresienstadt inmates and is annotated cannot be allowed.

Manuscript correspondence and other papers relating to the financial administration of Barbados and the Leeward Islands, 1669-1682, mostly concerned with the auditing of the accounts for the farm of the 4½% duty collected during the years 1670-77. The correspondents include: two farmers of the 4½% duty, Sir Charles Wheler and Colonel John Strode; [William Blathwayt], Auditor General of H.M. revenues in America; [Henry Guy], Secretary to the Treasury; and the governors of the Leeward Islands and Barbados.

Manuscript volume containing a list of papers concerning the financial administration of Argenta in the province of Ferrara, Italy, 1624-1667, notably the farming of the revenues of the chamberlain of Argenta for a year from Jan 1667, and various exemptions from tolls. This manuscript is a copy of an extract made by the public notary Guieseppe Girollo Beccari from a printed book entitled Instrumento d'affitte sopra l'appalto delle dogane, macinato, augmento del sale, e delle can cellarie de Ferrara, e suo stato...(Ferrara 1667).

A bill, 1677, for materials supplied and made up by a dressmaker, totalling over £14.

Manuscript memoranda book, 1817-1824, relating to the issue of the new silver coinage in February 1817 when the Hon William Wellesley-Pole (later 1st Baron Maryborough and 3rd Earl of Mornington) was Master of the Mint. Full details are given of the administrative measures taken to collect the old silver coin of the realm and to replace it by the new issue. The operation began on 13 February and was completed in fourteen days. Enclosed is a draft of a letter dated 10 February 1824 to Mr. B. Barnard, banker, of 50 Cornhill, London, announcing the presentation to him, by officers of the Mint, on the occasion of the Master's retirement (1824), of a bronze medal 'for assisting in the arrangement for the exchange of the silver coin in 1817'.

Export ledger with a printed title page 'Beer Surveys, No.1. To be used for brandy & wine stock book, ruled, unruled, distillery & cider minutes & distillery checks', possibly kept by John Burton, excise export surveyor, from 11-18 Oct 1836, and numbered '12' on the cover. Items examined in the City of London and Southwark include glass 'packed for exportation', (including bottles for beer and wine), tobacco, paper and soap, also bricks being shipped from Bridport, Dorset, in 1850. Transcripts of instructions, memoranda, licences etc and printed forms (export packing certificates, payment of excise declarations, export shipping notices etc) are also included.

Collection of French printed forms, mostly local taxation demands and receipts, completed in manuscript, 1767-1856, including those for taxes paid by the Labaume family of Beaune, wine merchants, 1785-1816, with forms of 1811 and 1814 connected with legal proceedings against them for debt, and receipts for taxes paid by Philippe Regnault, brewer, of Dijon, 1802-1815.

Manuscript volume containing transcripts of various proposals concerning the reformation of the coinage, 1695-1696, made in response to a request by the Exchequer for views on ideas discussed in A report...for the amendment of the silver coins (1695) by William Lowndes, Permanent Secretary of the Treasury. Comprising papers on the coinage by Sir Christopher Wren, Dr John Locke, Gilbert Heathcote, Alderman [Francis] Gardner, [Rev] Samuel Pratt [Dean of Rochester], [William] Corbet, Sir John Houblon, Dr John Wallis, Dr Isaac Newton, and William James, with further treatises entitled 'A merchant's demonstration superior to imagination, that the raising of bullion cannot be anyways injurious but highly advantageous to these three kingdoms above all others', and 'Some considerations offered to the House of Commons in relation to mending the coyne'. A note written in 1963 by E S de Beer regarding several of the items described above is inserted into the manuscript.

Two manuscript volumes containing accounts of John Carte of Ampthill, giving details of work done as a glazier, and, less frequently, as a plumber and decorator, 1793-1811. Customers are named, as are their places of residence, mostly in the immediate vicinity of Ampthill. Inserted loosely are four bills addressed to Carte for plumbing equipment and glass supplied from Birmingham and London, 1810-1815.

Two volumes of account books, for rent and general purposes, kept between 1783-1795 by a member of the Tayler family. Includes details of stocks and bonds such as Battersea Bridge tolls, and income from property in London, as well as household accounts.

Copy of a royal warrant signed by Robert Walpole, then Secretary at War, of 26 Dec 1708, to the auditors of the imprests on behalf of James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos and Paymaster General of the Forces, allowing him to continue his payments 'for our forces & other services in the Low Countries' at the agreed rate of ten guilders, fifteen stivers to the pound sterling.

Manuscript volume containing a treatise by John Sharp, Archbishop of York, on English coins and their history, 1697, containing chapters on silver and gold coins, Scots and Irish money, and a commentary on the treatment of coinage in William Nicolson's The English historical library (London, 1696-1699). Marginal notes state that Nicolson had requested Sharp's opinion on his book before its publication, and the whole of this manuscript appears to have been known to Nicolson before he began writing The English historical library. The references to pages in Nicholson's book given in Sharp's notes refer apparently to Nicholson's manuscript copy.

A wives' certificate book of the Benevolent Company of Dublin, from the period 1771 to 1801.

Manuscript volume containing accounts for the Généralité of Caen, France, for 1772-1773, headed 'Recette Généralle des Finances. Exercice 1772' and beginning 'Etat au vrai des recettes et depenses faites par Pierre Oursin, Ecuyer, Seigneur de Digoville, Conseiller du Roy, Receveur Général des Finances de la Généralité de Caen'. The accounts include financial details for the 'élections' of Caen, Bayeux, Saint Lo, Vire et Condé, Coutances, Carentan, Valognes, Avranches and Mertain. Each section of the accounts is signed by [Charles Gabriel] des Hommets [de Martainville] who was appointed 'commissaire pour verifier le present etat' on 19 Oct 1775, with the words 'Vu par nous', sometimes with further comment. The sums are listed under various headings, the individual items being entered against a place, a person, or the personnel of an office. The total expenses are given as 2,912,200 livres, 16 sols, 6 deniers; receipts as 2,948,734 livres, 9 sols, 6 deniers. The whole account was signed by Louis XVI and seven members of the Conseil Royale des Finances at Versailles on 28 Nov 1775. Each page is stamped 'Gen[eralité] de Paris Extraordinaire' in a decorative frame.

Manuscript 'Valuation of Pickton tithes to Michaelmas 1835', giving the property values of 9 farmers and the amounts for which they were liable. Includes 'Parish rates and cesses paid as per voucher to Michaelmas', and totals received from Kirk [Leavington] and Castle Leavington tithes to the same date.

Holograph drafts of speeches, 1765-1784, to be made in the House of Commons (but apparently not delivered) on subjects including American internal taxation, trade with Canada, the window tax and defence of the current administration.

An agricultural journal, 13 September 1833 to 28 June 1837; various account books; letters and estate papers.

Papers relating to Stephen Drew's Jamaica tontine and to the estate of Adam Smith of Bossue, Manchester, Jamaica, comprising: 1.Papers of Troward & Merrifield, 94 Pall Mall, London, solicitors to the trustees of the Dry Sugar Works Estate tontine, including in-letters, drafts and copies of out-letters, drafts and copies of minutes of meetings of subscibers, letter-books, accounts, lists of subscribers, nomination forms, and some printed items, including a printed prospectus, 1805-1821.

2. Papers apparently of J.W. Bromley, solicitor of 1 South Square, Gray's Inn, 1832-1836, relating to claims and counterclaims to compensation for the negroes on the estate of Adam Smith of Bossue, Manchester, Jamaica, whose will was proved on 4 Sep 1815. A printed form, dated 1836, of the Commissioners of Compensation, gives details of the settlement: William Shand, acting trustee under will of Adam Smith, claimant to compensation for 39 slaves, admitted counterclaim of William and Thomas Smith, executors and devisees in trust under will of Adam Smith (N.B. Copies of a number of letters to and from a William Shand in Jamaica are among the papers of Drew's Tontine.)

Exchequer order, dated 7 May 1715, addressed to George Montagu, Auditor of the Receipt of the Exchequer, by virtue of letters under the Privy Seal of 31 Dec 1714, to pay to Henry Scott, 1st Earl of Deloraine, £200 (a quarter of his annuity) from money applicable to the uses of the civil government. The order is signed by Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax, First Lord of the Treasury, and endorsed 'Intr. in Officio Cler. pelliu[m]'.

Manuscript volume, 1701-1704, containing the legal opinions of Sir Edward Northey, Attorney General, on cases submitted by the Treasury Board between 2 Oct 1701 and 29 Sep 1704 on matters including Customs and Excise, maritime law including the Navigation Act, prizes taken by Her Majesty's ships of war, the colonies, the Post Office, and the armed forces.

List of the expenses incurred over a number of weeks by J Brown whilst taking affidavits and oaths, presented as an account to Messrs Watson & Delavel, totalling £57 10s. 9d. The list is undated, and pasted to a backing sheet (now separated from the document) watermarked 1800. The list begins 'To my expenses with George Simpson, John Adams... and drinking [with] them warmly before I could get them prevailed on all night and next day to make affidavits...'.

Extract from records of proceedings before the Commissioners 'for hearing and determining appeals against the duties on male servants' at the Golden Lion Inn at Cheriton Bishop, Devon, on 3 Feb 1807, giving reasons for allowing an appeal against a surcharge on a domestic servant made by the Rev. Bryan Roberts, Rector of Drewsteignton. The appeal had been challenged by James Searle, surveyor, and the commissioners were Richard Holland, John Cann and Baldwin Huldford. The return made by Roberts in 1806 had included 1 four wheel carriage, 2 riding horses, 2 labour horses, 4 sporting dogs, 1 male servant, and 'one other occasionally employed in his garden'.

Part of a copy of a letter, possibly a circular letter, dated at Whitehall, 9 Jul 1763, from the Secretary of State for the Southern Department to the Governor of an unidentified American colony, containing orders to execute the measures of the 'Act for the further improvement of his Majesty's Revenue of Customs and for the encouragement of officers making seizures and for the prevention of clandestine running of goods into any part of his Majesty's dominions' (3 Geo.III c.22). The writer enclosed copies - all wanting - of the act, of an order in council, and of a list of the ships stationed in America.

Account book, Jan 1806-Feb 1817, containing details of the sale of wheat, wool and the raw materials needed for tanning leather and leatherworking, as well as wages to servants and workmen, loans and rents. Among nine loose items enclosed in the volume are a letter stamped at Roanne on 1 Jul 1831 to Claude Marie Chartre, 'Proprietaire a Cremeaux', and a fragment of another letter to the same person, who may have been the compiler of the accounts.

'An accompt of his Majesties customes in the Port of London inwards and outwards from Lady-day 1672 to Midsumer following'. The document names John Thorpe, Philip Marsh, Michael Wicks and Euclid Speidell, and shows the sums paid on Spanish and sweet wines, French and Rhenish wines, currants, vinegar, cloth, calf-skins and leather, to a total of £78,391 1s. 3d. On the dorse is 'An accompt of the new impost coynage duty and petty farmes in the Port of London from Lady-day 1672 to Midsumer following'. Imposts are shown as being levied on many of the same articles, but include also coinage duty, wood, salt and spice farms, potashes, to a total of £23,015 13s. 0½d.

Manuscript volume containing 'An abstract of the gross and net produce of the revenue of excise, malt, etc', with sections on 'rates on exciseable commodities' (including beer, wines, spirits, malt, candles, soap, paper, printed silks, wire, starch, hides, coffee, tea, chocolate, silver household plate and plate licences, victuallers licences, glass, coaches auctioneers' licences and auctions, male servants, bricks and tiles, linen, cotton, etc), the repeal of duties on paper in 1781 and additions of 1784, an 'Account of the Appropriations of the excise revenue', and 'Gross and Net produce of Excise, Malt etc' from 1709-1785.

1. 'An account of the disposal of the one million granted last session of Parliament towards enabling his Majesty to augment his forces by sea and land and to take necessary measures for the security of his dominions... presented by Charles Lowndes [Chief Clerk of the Treasury]' 19 Jan 1756.
2. 'An account shewing how the money given for the service of the year 1756 has been disposed of distinguished under the several heads (navy, ordnance, forces, deficience and one section of miscellaneous items) until the 4th day of March 1757 with the overplus thereupon...presented...by me Samuel Martin', 4 Mar 1757.

Draft, with marginal notes, of A letter from a Member of Parliament...containing his reasons for being against the late Act for preventing the retail of spirituous liquors, published in 1736. The letter concerns the writer's reasons for not supporting this Act (9 Geo.II c.23 - 1736), although he had supported the 'Act for laying a duty upon compound waters' (2 Geo.II c.17-1729, repealed by 6 Geo. II c.17-1733). Many of the arguments in the letter, for and against the Act, are given in similar terminology in Cobbett's Parliamentary History of England, vol IX (1811), columns 1032-44, and more particularly columns 1059-1110.

Deed relating to Danish royal finances, 15 Feb 1822, entitled 'Acte hypothécaire sur plusieurs revenus des finances royales', by which revenues were assigned to secure a loan of 3 million pounds at 5% raised on the London market by C.J. Hambro and Sons of Copenhagen through A.T. Haldimand and Sons on terms settled on 16 Oct 1821 and ratified by Frederick VI on 10 Nov 1821. The loan was to be secured on tolls from the Sound, and on mortgages and revenues from plantations on West Indian islands. Includes the signature of Frederick VI.

An account book, 1793-1800, belonging to Edward Lowe who owned land in Nottingham and Derbyshire. The account book includes details on servants' wages, business accounts and accounts with tradesmen. Also includes details of Lowe's marriage settlement with his wife Elizabeth.

Manuscript volumes containing an account of all taxes granted by Parliament since the Revolution, 1688-1705, containing Acts of Parliament from the first year of the reign of King William III and Queen Mary II up to the fourth year of Queen Anne's reign.

Petition, dated Aug 1619, of John Addis, Officer of the Wardrobe, for reimbursement of expenses incurred in taking one man, two horses and four labourers for six days from Warwick to Compton and transporting 'all such stuffe then needfull for the Prince [Charles], his service'. With the signature of Sir Robert Cary.

Letter from Edward Kirkpatrick of Southampton to Thomas Attree [or Altree] Esq of Brighthelmstone [Brighton], Sussex, 21 Sep 1822. Enquiring about the tax payable on flies [i.e. light carriages], as he wishes to have an example before advising resistance to the Tax Office. The duty demanded at Southampton was £6 10s. The flies there '... are built with metallic springs and leather in every respect as a large Landau, the wheels under 30 inches and driven by one ass'. Attree had evidently not answered [and perhaps not received] Kirkpatrick's earlier letter on the same subject.

Letter from Matthew Dove of Execution Dock Brewhouse, [London], 15 Sep 1744. Outlining a scheme for a lottery on survivorships for 99 years [apparently relating to some form of insurance or annuity dependent on certain people outliving others].

Manuscript volume containing a transcript of a treatise by Comte Goswin de Wynants, [1739], on the public charges made on the revenue of the provinces of Brabant and Limburg, Belgium. Includes a section in Flemish added after Wynants' death, headed 'Projecten van de setboekers gedruckt ende gepublieert met den placcaerte van den 12 Augusti 1749', and an appendix of extracts from documents dating from the 15th century to 1708, with marginal notes in the hand of the transcriber and notes, running titles and a table of contents added in a later 18th century hand.

Manuscript volume, [1580], containing instruction for all (Dutch) Exchangers for the alteration of coinage books and manuals following a proclamation that the fortieth part of all golden moneys is to be reserved for their salaries. The manuscript gives translations of the mottoes on various coins in place of the engravings of the coins found in the printed book.

Book contains full notes on the administration and officers of the Port of London, customs and excise, freights, smuggling, etc., arranged in alphabetical order, preceded by an index, 1842-1863.
