Papers of Michael Ward, member of the Greater London Council (GLC). The records are representative of the sort of organisations and issues Michael Ward dealt with in his capacity as Chair of the Industry and Employment Committee of the Greater London Council in the 1980s. The files of correspondence, minutes, funding applications and feasibility studies show that the Committee was particularly involved with issuing grants to worthy projects, supporting workers in disputes with employers, assessing the impact of new building developments in London, creating schemes, such as co-operatives, to assist people to work together and ensuring that all Londoners were fairly represented in the workplace.

Michael Ward was also Chair of the Enterprise Board Selection Panel, part of the Greater London Enterprise Board. GLEB was set up in 1982 to intervene and take initiatives to preserve and create long-term jobs for Londoners by regenerating the capital's industrial base. It aimed to discover and develop means of democratising London's economy. This collection contains its memorandum and articles of association together with correspondence, some publications and press releases.

The collection reflects some of the beliefs held by the GLC in general and not just those of the Committees Michael Ward sat on. For example, its enthusiasm for fair trade in Third World countries, the importance of equal opportunities at work and the value of the pedestrian and residential areas in cities

Iran: The Making of US Policy, 1977- 1980, is a themed microfiche collection which presents an integrated record of US foreign policy relating to Iran, 20 Jan 1977-29 Jan 1980. Included are memoranda, cabled messages, US embassy and consulate messages, Department of State reports, Central Intelligence Agency reports, US National Security Council reports and studies, and academic historical and political studies of the Middle East generally and Iran specifically, 21 Jan 1943-30 Apr 1980. Although the focus of this document set is on the 1977-1980 period, nearly one-third of the documents listed in the catalogue relate to the period prior to 1977. These are materials that were used in the preparation of the major internal inter-agency review of US-Iranian relations, the US Department of State 'White Paper'. The collection covers the beginning of the popular protests and mass demonstrations that resulted in the Iranian revolution of Feb 1979, which overthrew the pro-American monarchy of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran, and established the Islamic Republic of Iran. Personal Papers and correspondence of Sir Charles Locock (1799-1875) MSS.7807-7808. This consists of 11 items, 1821-1875. The Locock family papers, MSS.5782-5785, consist of 99 items, 1851-1948. The papers are primarily those of Revd Alfred Henry Locock (1829-1922), his wife Anna Maria, and Charles Dealtry Locock (1862-1946). The papers include a number of items relating to the illness and death of Sir Charles Locock. 1851-1948.

Papers reflecting the many different areas of Robina Addis's life and work, including her training and research; her involvement with both British and international societies and associations in the mental health field; visits abroad; lecturing, teaching and writing. After her official retirement she continued her involvement with the National Association for Mental Health, but was also able to extend her interests by working for the Save the Children Fund and other organisations, and these activities are also reflected in the collection.

There are, however, many gaps in the papers. While RSA's early training and research are covered, her work in child guidance in the prewar and Second World War periods are represented mainly by lecture notes and publications. Her long career in the NAMH is chronologically well covered from 1950 onwards, but the quantity of material is not great and it can be assumed that most of the papers were retained in the Association's internal filing system. With certain exceptions most of the papers representing RSA's other activities date only from the 1960s onwards and it is impossible to say what proportion of the total survives. The sequences of lecture notes and publications, do, however, seem to be fairly comprehensive.

In addition to the official papers there is much correspondence and other documentation created by or sent to Malcolm Morrison, who was active in both bodies and eventually became President of BIMM. The latter material contains a large amount of information on medical education, including draft syllabi.

BAMM and subsequently BIMM served as the British representative bodies within the Fédération International de Médecine Manuelle (FIMM); the collection includes some material on FIMM meetings and some discussion of the body's future.

There is also a very little information on activities of the British League Against Rheumatism (BLAR).

The pre-merger history of the Institute of Orthopaedic Medicine (IoM) is not represented.

Papers of the British Microcirculation Society including the files kept by the Secretary; signed minutes of Annual General Meetings and of committee meetings (1963-1990) together with accounts, correspondence files and copies of printed booklets about the Society and the scientific meetings which it organised. There are also copies of photographs and films about microcirculation, given by the former secretary.

The archive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy provides a comprehensive record of its activities and development, dating back to its foundation - with two press cuttings books of the 1894 'massage scandals' (P.1), and Council minutes from 1894 onwards (B.1). The core of the collection is formed by complete runs of minute books for the various committees. There are no committee working papers or correspondence files other than those bound with the minutes. Papers relating to education and examination including minutes for all the major committees and sub-committees (C.1), and material relating to the actual administration of examinations: syllabuses, examination papers, result books and reports (C.2). Records relating to membership including membership registers 1895-1975, published lists of members 1920-1986 and minutes and registers of the fund and prize committees 1949-1957 (D). Records of some branches and special interest groups within the CSP can be found in section J.

Material relating to protecting and improving the status of its members within the medical profession can be found in section F, especially in connection with the debates on the place of physiotherapy within the NHS - training, conditions of service and its existence as a profession distinct from others such as occupational therapy. These topics are also discussed in publications (N). Other publications illustrate specific physiotherapy and lifting techniques and advertise physiotherapy as a career. Section P contains 'historical' material relating to the early years of the Society: the 'massage scandal' press cuttings, and correspondence re the Harley Institute massage school 1912-1914. Section P also contains material relating to the writing of the Society's commissioned histories, and personal papers and reminiscences, including a group of papers and photographs relating to Olive Guthrie-Smith and the Swedish Institute, (later St Mary's Hospital School of Physiotherapy), 1904-1939. There is a substantial photograph collection (Q.1), dating from 1900-1980, illustrating many aspects of the Society's work as well as specific treatments and hospital departments. There are also nine films (Q.5), 1942-1976, illustrating techniques, training and events; sound recordings (Q.3); and a series of tapes of oral history interviews recorded in 1992 (Q.4).

The Cold War television documentary archive consists of transcripts of 531 interviews concerning events of the Cold War - the political, ideological tension between the United States and the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR), 1946-1989, following the end of World War Two, which while falling short of actual war between these two nations, was evident in their foreign and defence policies, and those of their allies.

Interviews were conducted with eyewitnesses from the US, USSR, Germany, Poland, Britain, Czechoslovakia, Italy, France, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Spain, Vietnam, Korea, China, Israel Egypt, South Africa, Angola, Cuba, Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and including politicians, policy makers and advisors, diplomats, journalists, academics, members of armed forces, dissidents, peasants, factory workers and civilians.

Events described include the Berlin blockade, 1948-1949, the Berlin Crisis, 1961, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Oct 1962, the Vietnam War, 1965-1975, the Korean War, 1950-1953, the Hungarian uprising, 1956, the Prague Spring, 1968, the nuclear arms race, 1945-1991, and Chinese communism, 1949-1972.

The collections also contains transcripts of a series of seminars on the Cold War, Oct 1995, as well as an incomplete series of files relating to individual episodes of the documentary series including annotated extracts of interview transcripts and other production information. (Transcripts in this section of the collection are mainly duplicates, however there are a small number which are not found in the main transcript series).

Complete transcripts of 38 filmed interviews concerning events leading up to the 9 Nov 1989 when the border between the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) was opened, and the demolition of the Berlin Wall began. The interviews were recorded for the production of the television documentary Fall of the Wall, which was broadcast in 1994. The collection also includes programme scripts and press releases for each of the hour long documentary episodes titled 'A Hole in the Wall' and 'The Fatal Error'.

The collection primarily consists of papers from various groups and committees Carlton and her predecessors were involved with, particularly the Labour Party Home Policy sub-committees relating to local government, which the Local Government Officer was Secretary of. These were the Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1959-1960 and 1963-1964), the Regional and Local Government Advisory Committee (papers from 1965-1970), and the Regional and Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1970-1971).
