The records were catalogued between 1908 and 1959 by members of Guildhall Library staff.

Letters and papers relating chiefly to Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) in his work at the Navy Office 1660-73 and at the Admiralty 1673-9 and 1684-9, and also to the family of Richard Pepys (c 1589-1659), first cousin to the diarist's father, 1642-1689.

Papers of Charles Cox and Son, marine agents, comprising eight volumes of letters from Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel concerning pay and other financial matters.

Records of Horne, Engall and Freeman, solicitors, [1200]-1953, consisting of practice papers, records deriving from clerkships and other official capacities and Mr Scott Freeman's personal records, collection of maps and prints of Middlesex and printed material on the history of Staines. The material relates predominantly to Staines but also includes Ashford, Cranford, Egham, Feltham and Stanwell.

Records of the Parish of Saint Andrew, Enfield, comprising churchwarden's receipts for fines paid for encroachment on Enfield Chase.

This collection comprises the title deeds of various small pieces of land in Enfield (and also Herts, Essex and Whitechapel) which have, at different times in the past, become the property of the parish of Enfield for charitable purposes, together with leases and appointments of trustees. They were kept in the parish chest until the end of the nineteenth century, as is shown by an old label noting that a bundle of deeds was removed from the parish chest in 1903. The deeds have an exceptional interest and value for the history and topography of Enfield.

Records of the Church Commissioners, 1814-1907, including a glebe exchange award, Ruislip, with map [a glebe is a portion of land assigned to a clergyman as part of his benefice]; documents relating to altered apportionments of corn rents, Ruislip; plans of the Parish of Enfield and the Parish of Edmonton; architect's drawings of houses and shops-cum-residences on Hornsey Clebe Estate; "Plan of Land near Harrow on the Hill, adjoining the Station on the London and North Western Railway, showing the proposed arrangement of the Sites for Villas, the Roads, etc." and plan of the District of the Hornsey Local Board.

Records deposited with the Clerk of the Peace for the Middlesex Quarter Sessions, comprising a parochial list of the poll for the County of Middlesex at the General Election 1802; printed in 1803 with minor handwritten additions, including the signature of Edward Knight, former owner.

OBE, in 1923 as a testimonial of his administrative work in the parish of Heston and on the Local and County Councils, 1898-1923; with illuminated address containing the resolution of the Justices of the Peace of the Petty Sessional Division of Brentford expressing appreciation of 30 years 'distinguished service' by the Deputy Chairman, Sir William George Lobjoit, O.B.E., 1937.

Records of the London County Council (LCC) Progressive Society, comprising minutes of the Society, including agendas and lists of candidates.

Records of the Parish of St James, Edmonton, comprising photocopied register of banns, 1952-1955; and St James Edmonton Boys School, comprising penny bank ledger, 1920-1921.

Records of the church of Saint George in the East, Stepney, comprising churchwarden's accounts and vouchers.

Records of the Staines branch of the Citizens' Advice Bureau, including case files and administrative papers such as press packs, day sheets, correspondence and consumer sheets.

Records of the Greater London Council Architect's Department's Historic Buildings Division, which were passed to the London Region of English Heritage. Highlights of the archive include plans and files for the refurbishment of Covent Garden Central and Flower Markets, which was carried out during the 1970s and 1980s. There is practically a full set of plans, around 800 in total, showing the main project and a range of sub-projects. The earliest drawing in the whole collection is the original site plan for Covent Garden, dating to 1828.

Other large projects include the rehabilitation of houses in Albury Street, Deptford (1954-1979), restoration of the terraces at Crystal Palace (1952-1989) and restoration work at Holland House (1952-1985). There are also plans of a group of projects covering work on Thames bridges, giving information on superstructure and cast iron work. Related files can be found in the list for GLC/AR/HB/01.

The collection contains a large and important series of plans and drawings for buildings and other projects, dating between 1828 and 1993. The GLC allocated job numbers to each project it undertook, with the prefix HB, and these plans are listed in job number order and are also arranged by size (our ref: ACC/3499/EH/02 for AO size and ACC/3499/EH/05 for AQ size). Plans outside the GLC period, ie 1828-1965 and 1986-1993, were produced by the LCC or by English Heritage and consequently do not have job numbers. These plans have been listed in alphabetical order by the premises or street involved and again have been arranged by size (ACC/3499/EH/03 for AO size and ACC/3499/EH/06 for AQ size).

Most of the plans were used as working drawings, and many were re-used for later projects. Where possible the original order of the drawings has been re-established, but as a result of this re-use there are some gaps and many will not be in date order as old plans were removed and other contractors' drawings added in.

In many cases the files for individual projects will complement the plans, and they too have been arranged by number; those produced by the GLC's Historic Buildings Division were given reference numbers beginning AR/HB (the HB number will correspond with the number allocated to any plans), and those produced by English Heritage after 1986 had the prefix LD. These original reference numbers have been included in the main description field of this list (ACC/3499/EH/07/01).

Other material relating to individual projects has been listed as ACC/3499/EH/07/02-05. This includes specification and some folded contract drawings, surveys and reports, photographs and order books for repairs. Framed awards from the Civic Trust, which were awarded to English Heritage for certain refurbishment projects, have been catalogued as ACC/3499/EH/11/01-02.

Administrative Files were generated by the GLC, and by English Heritage through its Works, Administration and Survey and General Sections. They include such topics as staffing, finance, organisation, technical files and civic design, and include minutes of several bodies, such as the GLC's Historic Buildings Division itself and the Faculty Jurisdiction Commission. They have been listed as ACC/3499/EH/08/01-06. Some town and borough planning schemes are also included in the collection, under ACC/3499/EH/10.

Borough Lists: English Heritage began compiling a "visible index" of buildings within the Greater London area during the 1970s. It was intended to be a reference point for listed buildings, those proposed for listing and those on the supplementary list (i.e. Grade III listed). The Grade III listing was subsequently abolished and the buildings either absorbed into the main statutory list or included in councils' own Local Lists.

The volumes of the visible index in this collection (ACC/3499/EH/01) cover the London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Enfield, Hammersmith, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow. Much more of Greater London was included in the index but the volumes were subsequently lost.

During the early 1980s the whole of Greater London was systematically re-listed, and the lists published in book form, in borough order, by the Department of the Environment. Most of these "Green back" books are represented in this collection (ACC/3499/EH/09/01-05), with the exception of those for Enfield, Havering, Haringey, Merton, Newham, Southwark and Waltham Forest. Some supplementary lists and local lists are also included.

Records of the London History Workshop, 1984, consisting of slide carousels relating to the 95th birthday cake exhibition and files of research relating to the history of London government.

Papers relating to the work of Witold Kay-Korzeniewicz, including development plans, photographs and reports for Paternoster Square, Saint Paul's Cathedral, Heathrow Airport, Elephant and Castle, King's Cross Station, Saint Pancras Station, South Bank, Festival of Britain, London Underground, Wembley Stadium, Grand Union Canal, and Warren Street Station.

Records of the British Tyre and Rubber Company, and associated merged or subsidiary companies, 1864-1978. This substantial collection consists mainly of statutory business records of associated companies with very little relating to production: meeting minutes of the board 1864-1937, directors minutes, 1868-1871, general meeting minutes, 1864-1918, shareholders committee minutes, 1875, debenture trustee minutes, 1887-97, 1901-02, finance and executive committee minutes 1864-1866; share ledgers, c 1917-38; balance sheets and accounts, 1920-1936; ledgers, c 1931-1934, private ledgers, 1934-61; journals, 1939-1942, private journals, 1934-1960; private cash books, 1926-62, petty cash books, 1938-8; cheque account books, 1933-8; bills receivable books, 1935-64; nominal accounts for Calcutta, 1889-1954, and Christchurch, 1920-44; and Durban private ledger, 1900-1922.

Records of Catesbys Limited, department store, 1908-1958. The records consist of registers of members and directors, annual returns and minutes. There are also private ledgers, many indexed; progress and stock books, as well as wage returns. There is a salaries book for Catesbys Contract and Export Ltd.

Records of the General Hydraulic Power Company Limited, 1882-1992, containing corporate and administrative records, accounting records, share details, property and legal records, personnel records, technical records and printed material for the General Hydraulic Power Company Limited and associated companies.

Records of Whiffen and Son Ltd, manufacturing chemists, 1752-1972, including history of the company; articles of partnership and other contracts and agreements; legal documents relating to property; correspondence; circulars; financial accounts; papers relating to shares and shareholders; stock records; newspaper cuttings; photographs; staff wages books and pensions papers; records relating to staff associations and sports clubs including minute books; reports on chemical manufacture, laboratory notebooks and chemical analyses; papers relating to sales; papers relating to imports and foreign suppliers; advertisements; registers of product labels; samples of packaging; rules, regulations and legislation regarding factories and safety measures; papers regarding the Second World War including war damage to factories and papers relating to staff on active duty.
