Papers of Robert Hetherington, predominantly concerned with contraception (especially oral contraception) drug toxicity and thalidomide. It consists mainly of press cuttings but there is a large collection of advertising material for oral contraceptives with some notes and correspondence. Dr Hetherington was collecting material during the 1960s and 1970s both agreeing and disagreeing with his own ideas on these contentious issues.

Papers of Sir Leonard Rogers, early-mid 20th century, including diaries, diary notes, personal material, experimental notebooks, drafts of books and articles, correspondence, and notes on various (mainly tropical) diseases, particularly cholera, leprosy, and tuberculosis; reprints.

Papers of William Edward Van Heyningen, 1947-1978, including laboratory notebooks (bacterial toxins, dysentery, tetanus), 1947-1961; correspondence on cholera, 1967-1978, and tetanus, 1956-1974; miscellaneous reports and publications (mainly cholera).

Reports, diaries, memoirs, photographs and memorabilia given to the Royal Army Medical Corps Museum and Library by former officers and men of the Corps. Some date back to Marlborough's campaigns of the late 17th century; there is also material relating to the continuing European and Imperial conflicts of the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Crimean War (1854-1856), the Boer War and the Balkan conflicts of the early 20th century, the two World Wars, the Korean War and other smaller conflicts thereafter.

Files produced by, and sent to, the AIDS and Social Policy Group of the Family Planning Association in the 1980s and early 1990s. The collection contains correspondence, press releases, minutes of meetings and studies on AIDS.

These records contain material dealing with all aspects of County Medical Officers' work. The broad categories are: minutes, 1902-1907 and 1918-1974; correspondence, 1939-1974; plus a few photographs and miscellaneous items, 1905-1972.

Among the papers are several boxes of records generated by Dr Ramage's role as Association of County Medical Officers of Health representative on the Public Health and Housing (subsequently Health and Welfare) Committee of the County Councils Association. These consist of minutes and other circulated papers and subject files of correspondence, etc. As these records are not duplicated in the holdings of the Association of County Councils (formerly the County Councils Association) they have been retained as of considerable interest on local government health matters.

The collection covers material relating to activities of the Association of District Community Physicians from its inception to 1980. They include minutes, lists of members, newsletters and subject files. Many files relate to the role of the District Community Physician in the reorganised NHS. The final year of its existence is not covered; however, some information may be found in the papers of the Society of Medical Officers of Health (SA/SMO) and Association of Area Medical Officers of Health (SA/AMO).

Proceedings, Jan 1912', relating to the views of Sir R Ross and Col W G King on malaria prevention in India (the 'Mian Mir' Controversy). Contains despatch from the Secretary of State to the Government of India, 5 May 1911, enclosing letters to and from Professor Ross, 1910-1911, and Memorandum by Ross and Col W G King; and despatch to the Secretary of State in response, 25 Jan 1912, enclosing address by Surgeon-General Sir C P Lukis, President of the Bombay Malaria Conference, and resolutions passed at the Bombay Malaria Conference.

The bulk of the papers are reports and talks reflecting Sir Weldon Dalrymple-Champneys' interests as a physician and wide range of duties as Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health at the Ministry of Health. The subject files (section H) contain details, including some manuscript diaries, of work in which he was particularly closely involved, such as snake venom and brucellosis. Texts of talks and broadcasts, some extracted from those subject files, are brought together in section F. Section D includes personal letters from distinguished colleagues. Sections A-C include mementos of Sir Weldon's father, Sir Francis Henry Champneys (1848-1930), a pioneer of modern midwifery who was Physician-Accoucheur at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London (1891-1913).

Louisa Martindale collection, 1872-1964. The collection consists of Section A: a little personal correspondence, papers, articles, speeches and lectures by Louisa Martindale, and some personal material including notes on the glaucoma which eventually blinded her, 1872-1960; and Section B: papers concerning the Medical Women's International Association (founded 1919) of which Miss Martindale was President from 1937 to 1947. As well as her own correspondence in this capacity, 1937-1946, there is one file of the correspondence of Mme Montreuil-Strauss, Secretary of the Medical Women's International Association at his period. (Louisa Martindale destroyed the vast bulk of her case records at the time of her retirement from practice around 1950, those remaining were destroyed by her executors after her death).

This is the original text of 'The Story of Filaria bancrofti: A Critical review' published in Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1959, 62, pp53-61, 85-94, 106-117, 138-145, 160-173. This was divided up into five parts: I Early history; II Metamorphosis of W bancrofti, in the mosquito and filarial periodicity; III Advances in the 20th century; IV Mosquito intermediaries of W bancrofti; V Description of W bancrofti and pathology of filiariasis. MSS.1456-1499 comprise chiefly drafts of essays and papers by Cantlie, spanning his entire career but with the bulk (MSS.1461-1486) dating from his years in Hong Kong. The subject is generally tropical medicine; diseases discussed include leprosy, dropsy, kala-azar, beri-beri, cholera and malaria, with particular emphasis upon leprosy. Worth individual notice are MSS.1456, in which Cantlie describes a case of blood poisoning that he acquired in the dissecting room at Charing Cross Hospital; MS.1459, commemorating the military surgeon Paul Bennett Conolly (died at Khartoum on the Gordon Relief Expedition of 1885); 1461, 1466 and 1463, two diaries and a cashbook respectively to do with his Hong Kong medical practice; 1469, a fragment of a register of patients in the Hong Kong Hospital; 1480-1481, casebooks compiled in Hong Kong; 1489, a dummy copy of the first edition of the Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, founded by Cantlie; and 1499, a collection of questionnaire responses relating to the life history of Eurasian "half-castes" in which Cantlie is one of many respondents drawn from the western fringes of the Pacific (China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand). MSS.6931-6941 contain correspondence, personal and travel papers, medical notes, printed material (including much material relating to papers published in the Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene), illustrative material and certificates, the last also including items relating to other members of Cantlie's family.

The papers in this collection comprise official documentation issued by the authorities in New Spain (specifically, in Mexico). They include the appointment of José Gracida y Bernal (1760?-1815) as one of the Protomedicatos who were in charge of medical matters in New Spain (WMS/Amer.96); three certificates issued by Protomedicatos giving individuals licence to practice medicine (WMS/Amer.51, 64 and 97); a copy of a notice suspending quarantine procedures in the city of Mexico during the fever epidemic of 1813 (WMS/Amer.3); and a order authorising payment to F.X. de Balmis (1753-1819) for work on indigenous plants in the treatment of syphilis (WMS/Amer.62).

The items in the collection span the work of the Junta during the 1797-1798 smallpox epidemic, comprising a circular announcing the setting up in late 1797 of local charitable societies to be co-ordinated by the Junta, and the Junta's concluding report of early 1798.

These items comprise disbound sections of a recipe book, possibly that of a hacienda; the probable area of origin is Amozoc de Mota, Puebla, Mexico. They give recipes for the treatment of diseases such as typhus, cholera and smallpox. WMS/Amer.55 comprises a copy of a contemporary broadside by Gaspar Escayola.

'The Indian Medical Service: a history of its medical research 1600-1947': unpublished manuscript and draft chapters. This history was apparently undertaken by Colonel Mulligan under the auspices of the Wellcome Trust, with a view to publication. Colonel Mulligan died in 1982 and his work was finished and prepared for publication by Colonel C.W.A. Searle, but was never published.
