Analysis of William Willshire's early printed book collection and notes on early Christian archaeology.

This collection comprises a variety of unrelated items listed under the fonds 'Small Collections' for convenience. The items include: research notes, transcripts, treatises, reports, surveys, drawings, annals, chronicles, calendars, translations, newspaper cuttings, sermons, scrapbooks, books of hours and gospels, warrants, bills, accounts, sales catalogues, recipes, ships' manifests and lists. Most of the items relate to the history of the City of London or greater London, with subjects including hospitals, shops, churches, street layout, legal matters, government and Mayors, livery companies, markets, the residents of the city, inns and taverns, armorial bearings, law and order, parks, armed forces and war, taxation, monarchs, fires, the river Thames, food, medicine, topography and monumental inscriptions.

Poll of the livery of the City of London for a member of Parliament, listing the voters' names, livery company, address and vote, 1781.

Records of the Corporation of London Libraries Committee, comprising record made in 1923 of proceedings taken by the Committee to protect the Library holdings from air raid damage during the First World War; album of letters, 1910; and letters from the Chairman of the Committee to Thomson Hankey, who had been critical of the Library in a letter to the Times newspaper, 1869.

Records of the Church of England Diocese in Europe. The records mainly relate to the administration of the Diocese, the oversight of chaplaincies and relations both with other organisations working within the Diocese and with other churches on the Continent. The bishop established a Bishop's Council to act as an advisory body for the Diocese.

It should be noted that many of the files are general and contain information on a variety of topics e.g. administration, finance and chaplaincy. This is especially true of the large series of correspondence between the diocesan administration and the chaplaincies, Ms32699/1-624.

There is a 30 year closure period on the Diocese in Europe material except Mss 32667/1-12, 32687 and 32688/1-12 which have a 50 year closure period and Ms 32699/1-624 which are closed for 75 years.

Manuscript dictionary catalogue of painters, compiled and written by Thomas Claudius Alleyne. The dictionary comprises vols. 1-19 (there are two parts to vols. 2 and 3). Vol. 20 is a thumb case containing miscellaneous papers.

Pocket book entitled "Tables and Memoranda for Engineers", published by M T Shaw and Company Ltd, containing useful information for engineers such as mathematical formulae, calculations, the strengths of various materials, the width of types of pipe, the hardness of different soils, the areas of circles and so on.

Papers relating to Lying-In hospitals, comprising an almanack with a print of the City of London Lying In Hospital, 1773 and a cutting from the Nursing Times relating to the closure of the General Lying In Hospital, 1971.

Records of J Lyons and Company Limited, food manufacturers and caterers, 1891-1995. The archives reflect all aspects of the company's history. There are some of the usual company records relating to management, shareholding and administration, but the collection is particularly strong in what may be termed ephemera. There are hundreds of photographs, from 1887 up to the present day, a few films and videos, and large collections of press cuttings, advertisements, menus and even a set of lithographs which were commissioned by the company after the Second World War as a way of brightening up Lyons Corner Houses.

Records of Metropolitan Water Board predecessors, 1870-1969, comprising contracts, tenders and specifications for construction, improvements and other works.
