          Records of the Foundling Hospital. The collection consists of over 800 linear feet of shelving, an estimated 8 tons of paper, and over 1000 plans. The completeness of the collection is particularly noteworthy. The officers of the Hospital from the very beginning were extremely meticulous in record keeping and detailed documents survive which record the lives of the children, the way in which the Hospital operated, the methods of nursing, the prescriptions of the apothecary, the reports of the inspectors, the extraordinary accounts of women's lives, and the involvement of leading figures of the day in actively supporting the charity.

          Of the nine volumes in this class eight are French. The earliest is a journal kept by de la Maisonfort, Captaine en Segond in the Fleuron in 1732, the ELIZABETH, 1740 to 1741, and the VIGILANT in 1745, which was captured by the SUPERB in that year. There is a journal kept by Le Chevalier des Courtils de Bissy on board the PALMIER in 1755; a journal by Duclos Legris on the MARENGO, in the East Indies, 1803 to 1806, which includes seventy-seven illustrations; and three volumes of a journal kept by Ernest de Cornulier on various French ships, 1820 to 1833. The remaining volume is a contemporary copy written in English in the ship's cashbook, of the log of the Acapulco treasure galleon, NUESTRA SENORA DE CABADONGA, 1742 to 1743, which was captured by the CENTURION in 1743.

The records are in the form of bound volumes containing the initial deed followed by schedules which include lists of Philip Flower's property, personal and real, lists of mortgages and copies of accounts kept by trustees. The property records relate to 17 and 18 Dover Street, Piccadilly (knocked together to form one property in 1876) and the legal records comprise deeds of release and indemnity for Cyril Flower.

          The collection is mostly comprised of diaries written by Florence Turtle between 1917 and 1980. The first three diaries (1917-1919) contain generally brief and sporadic entries. There are then no diaries for the years 1920-1928. From 1929 onwards the diaries contain more detailed entries. There are no diaries for the years 1944, 1946, 1948-1949, 1952-1954, 1962, 1964-1965, or 1967-1970. Florence writes in her diaries about her relationships with family and friends, her living situation, work life, social life, holidays, and local, national and international current events, and records her thoughts and feelings on various matters. Many of the diaries contain additional notes, clarifications and corrections made by Florence in the 1970s. Some of the diaries contain photographs, and also pencil illustrations by Florence. The collection also contains one volume in which Florence reviews the books she reads throughout 1936, and a volume entitled 'Book of Ideas', in which Florence has written quotations from various sources, and also glued newspaper cuttings. The remaining items in the collection are a set of photographs of Florence's family and friends, and a framed certificate of election to the Buyers Association of Great Britain.

There are a large number of photographs and press cuttings as well as some family papers. The photographs show Fisher's activities as Mayor and as Chairman of the London Labour Mayors Association, and include pictures of visits to Geneva, Australia, Gibraltar, New York, Israel and Belfast.
