Records of the Middlesex Deeds Registry, 1709-1938. Deeds and documents brought into the Registry for registration were initially copied onto pieces of parchment called memorials, and then into large volumes or registers. The registers exist for 1709-1938. Information held in the memorials and registers includes the date of the transaction, the names of the parties and a description of the property. Plans were frequently included in the entries and from 1892 a separate series of plan tracings of larger map and plans was made.

The indexes cover 1709-1919, and consist of large volumes with entries arranged under the surname of the vendor or first party in alpha-chronological order. Against each entry is a note of the other parties and the location of the property. Indexes for 1920-1938 take the form of an alphabetised card index to the names of the vendors or first parties. Information is given on the location of the property, varying in detail from a parish to a street name and number.

The indexes 1709-1919 and registers of memorials have been microfilmed.

Records of the Middlesex County Surveyor, 1853-1914. The records in this series relate mainly to the period when Frederick Hyde Pownall was County Surveyor for Middlesex. The type of records held include committee minutes and papers, administrative records, reports, plans and maps, photographs, log books, registers and samples of case files, examinations, application forms, licences, publicity material, pamphlets, leaflets and publications. The records deal with various aspects of Middlesex governance including the management of schools, hospitals, health centres, libraries, residential care homes and other insitutions; the overseeing and regulation of construction work, roads and highways, sewers, drains and bridges; tax assessments; the construction and maintenance of housing estates; the maintenance of parks and open spaces; the care of children, the elderly and the disabled; the monitoring of legal requirements; licensing and monitoring of establishments including theatres and cinemas; licensing of vehicles and drivers; traffic congestion and transport issues; town planning; financial accounts, estimates and budgets, and civil defence and emergency measures during the First and Second World Wars.

Enclosed is a covering letter from Major C J Teychenne, Officer in Command, who describes the activities of the company in Iceland and asks for any news from Middlesex.

Original source material includes correspondence including that of Marcel Thomas, conservator at the Bibliothèque Nationale and Robert Michaelis regarding the authenticity of recently discovered documents relating to the Dreyfuss affair; drafts and notes include an annotated draft of Der Prozess Dreyfus and printed source material including newspaper cuttings and various publications concerning the Dreyfus affair.

Papers of Lt Francis Meynell. There is an illustrated log, 1853 to 1854, kept while Meynell was in the ROYAL GEORGE. His letters cover his whole career, 1833 to 1854, and have been organized by his mother, together with newspaper cuttings relating mainly to the China War. In addition, there is a sketch book which includes several ships' portraits and places Meynell visited, from China to the South Atlantic.

This collection contains photocopies and photographs of original letters from Ernst Meyer; Copies of his reports to the Politburo, the Zentral Komitee and the Comintern, 1928-1930; Statements and resolutions by Ernst Meyer, 1921, 1926, 1929; letters to and from Meyer by G Zinoviev, A Thalheimer, W Ulbricht and others, 1922-1929.
