Papers, 1787-1884, collected by the solicitors in the course of their work, comprising deeds and legal documents relating to properties in Tower Street (formerly Gilberts Row), Southwark, including leases, abstract of title, assignment of leasehold, marriage settlement and accounts.

Records of the Royal Choral Society. The archive is divided into seven sections: administrative records, including a series of individual concert files; financial records; membership records, which include attendance registers and audition files; concert records and programmes; publicity records including posters and newspaper cuttings; files of printed musical scores, arranged by piece, and including programmes for concerts featuring the work; miscellaneous records, which comprise information and programmes relating to other choirs, magazines of the society, or which include articles on the society or choral singing in general, and photographs of choir members, soloists and conductors.

Highlights of the collection include a comprehensive, although not complete, series of concert programmes from 1873-1985, including the programme for the last concert to be held in the Queen's Hall before its destruction during World War II. There are also manuscript copies of "Eryri" by Alun Hoddinott. This piece was composed for the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1969 and the collection has a copy both of the original score, for 16 soloists, chorus and orchestra, and the revised version for baritone solo, chorus and orchestra.

The records in this collection, 1734-1997, cover the activities of five individual clubs which over 200 years or so were created and merged. Brooks's Club makes up the bulk of this archive. Its records contains those of its inner club, the Fox Club. In 1975 St. James' Club joined Brooks's bringing with it the furniture, art and members of the Society of Dilettanti and the Bachelors' Club which it had taken in years before. In addition to these there is of course mention of many other British and foreign clubs which had links with these five. 'Clubland' is a place of many interconnections between members and the establishments themselves. They often share a common historical heritage as well as members and the collection hints at these links.

The focus of any club is its members and this is reflected in this collection. The members are very well represented, even through records which are not created by them. Chairmen, committees, secretary's and staff are all concerned with providing a good service. They exist to serve the needs of the members and respond to their questions. The large amount of correspondence, minutes, suggestion books and notices illustrates the sort of concerns the membership presented to the management structure. The property has to be maintained, the food, wine and entertainment needs to be provided and of good quality and subscription accounts need to be managed.

The members had to get elected in the first place and the ballot and candidate books detail this process. The main purpose of these clubs was to provide a meeting place in London for like-minded gentlemen who could chat about politics and current affairs but also enjoy themselves. Many of the records are concerned with the pursuits of drinking, eating and gambling. Dinners, routs, card and backgammon games were an integral part of club life. Amongst the archive material are the "betting books". These are infamous amongst members and record wagers (sporting, political and personal) set as far back as 1770s. They represent the ethos of early club life.

This collection is a fascinating and detailed look at several institutions which in the early nineteeth century had within their membership the major social, economic and politcal players of the time and which continue to hold their attraction for those people today.

(It is evident from the records that throughout the history of Brooks's it's name has been spelt in a variety of ways by historians, reporters and members alike. 'Brooks', 'Brookes' and 'Brooks's' have all been used. For the purpose of this list the latter spelling has been used as it is the most commonly found one and is also how the Club is known today. Similarly, St. James' Club is known by this title rather than by its fully expanded title of 'Saint James' Club'. These are the spellings applied in the list unless it has been used specifically in a different format contemporary to the documents).

Account book of John Smith, 1815-1822, including sections on cash paid, cash received, stocks and shares, leasing arrangements, and (at front) list of birth dates [of his children?]; with enclosures including list of 11 title deeds to properties mainly in Middlesex and Surrey; list of documents held in the large portfolio, 1768-1817; list of accounts and documents; list of some of the precious items, such as jewellery, belonging to the Smith family.

Records of the London Labour Party, reflecting the activity of the central body of the Party, the executive committee, and its relation to the affiliated organisations. Records relating to individual parties are the central body's dealings with the parties rather than being the records of the individual parties themselves. There is much printed material, including a fine series of journals, especially the London Labour Chronicle (later, London News) from 1915-1964. The majority of the records are post World War II.

Records of the London Cooperative Society; comprising receipts listing deeds and documents concerning properties in Alperton, Edmonton, Hillingdon, Islington, Ruislip and Willesden, 1932-1936; and correspondence and papers concerning deeds for and valuations of property, 1971-1977.

Records of the Royal Commercial Travellers' School, Pinner, comprising letter written by Victor Winstanley, pupil at the School, to his mother, 21 March 1896, mentioning sports and weather and asking for light blue ribbon as 'The Oxford and Cambridge boat race is a week today'.

Records of the Tudor Brothers, fancy drapers, comprising copy draft agreement by Evans to Tudor Brothers regarding shops numbers 4-6 Imperial Court, Albert Gate, Brompton Road, Kensington (with plans), 26 Aug 1903 and copies of profit and loss accounts of Tudor Brothers, fancy drapers, 1901-1904.
