Manuscripts from the collection of the British Medical Association, formerly held in the BMA Library, Tavistock Square, London. The manuscripts were numbered and catalogued at the BMA, with two exceptions among these papers - however the numbering of surviving documents is not consecutive, so that the original collection must have contained at least 26 catalogued items and an unknown number of unrecorded acquisitions. Former BMA MSS.1-6 (transferred at the same time as the manuscripts described here) are now GC/140; one fugitive BMA manuscript was purchased separately and is now MS. 6881. The location of the remainder is not known. The contents mainly comprise transcripts of medical lectures and case notes.

Miscellaneous historical essays, written by individuals employed by or associated with the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum. Authors include Alban Doran (1849-1927), Charles Thompson (1862-1943) and Marion Spielmann (1858-1948).

Papers reflecting the many different areas of Robina Addis's life and work, including her training and research; her involvement with both British and international societies and associations in the mental health field; visits abroad; lecturing, teaching and writing. After her official retirement she continued her involvement with the National Association for Mental Health, but was also able to extend her interests by working for the Save the Children Fund and other organisations, and these activities are also reflected in the collection.

There are, however, many gaps in the papers. While RSA's early training and research are covered, her work in child guidance in the prewar and Second World War periods are represented mainly by lecture notes and publications. Her long career in the NAMH is chronologically well covered from 1950 onwards, but the quantity of material is not great and it can be assumed that most of the papers were retained in the Association's internal filing system. With certain exceptions most of the papers representing RSA's other activities date only from the 1960s onwards and it is impossible to say what proportion of the total survives. The sequences of lecture notes and publications, do, however, seem to be fairly comprehensive.

Papers of Sir Albert Ruskin Cook and Lady Katharine Cook including correspondence, 1812-1951, giving many details of the Cooks' life and work in Uganda. There is also a large collection of diaries, 1855-1951, a number of photographs of Uganda and holidays abroad, c 1896-1930s, family and personal papers, 1882-1951, a small amount of printed material, [1896-1947], and microfilms of records held at the Albert R Cook Library of Medicine at the Makerere University Medical School, Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, covering 1897-1960s and including patient case notes and registers 1897-1920.

Records of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists' External Affairs Committee, 1932-1950, comprising correspondence and related papers covering a wide variety of issues reflecting the Committee's broad terms of reference, for example: maternity hospitals, midwifery, female circumcision, pregnancy in wartime, maternal mortality and nutrition in pregnancy. It should be noted however, that much of the material included in the series appears to have been placed here in error simply because it relates to the external affairs of the College. As well as containing records of the External Affairs Committee, this fonds also has records related to the general external affairs of the college. Some of these records are concerned with obstetrics and gynaecology during the period of the Second World War.

Records relating to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists' (RCOG) involvement in two National Birthday Fund for Maternity Services (NBTF) surveys, and also cover a period, between 1969 and 1973, when the NBTF engaged in unsuccessful negotiations with the RCOG for the Trust's integration into the College. They include original data collection forms for the 1984 'Birthplace' study.

Two of these notebooks are of a combined noted and cases format i.e diary entries on visits to own or colleagues' patients rather than as supporting second-hand information or for reference. This section contains papers relating to nursing and public health courses offered at Bedford College. The papers concern the administration of the courses including correspondence and minutes of committee meetings as well as a number of press clippings, pamphlets related to the course and sample certificates.

'Reminiscences of the Hospital at the Corner', St George's, Hyde Park, by Pamela Mary Clewett as a probationer nurse, 1939-1945. This is an autobiographical account of what it was like training as a nurse at St George's and elsewhere during the war years.
