Two scrapbooks of documents, newspaper cuttings and photos collected by Sir Jethro Justinian Harris Teall and his wife Harriet, 1876-1926.

Many items relate to Teall's life, with events including his honorary degrees, lectures he gave, dinners he attended, and invitations to occasions such as the funeral of Edward VII and the coronation of George V. There is also a great deal of material relating to his younger son Frederick Teall, particularly his time in the Cambridge University Athletic Club and his subsequent career in the Egyptian civil service and participation in tennis tournaments in Cairo. There are a few items relating to Teall's wife, Harriet, and his elder son, George Teall, who was in the army.

The first volume mostly dates from Teall's time as director of the Geological Survey, while the second relates to the latter part of Teall's directorship of the Geological Survey and his subsequent retirement activities.

A small collection of papers of Sir Arthur George Tansley, mainly related to the formation of organisations, in the period 1918-1921, that aimed to promote pure and applied scientific research. The bulk of the collection consists of papers relating to Tansley's involvement in the Scientific Research Association. The Scientific Research Association's papers include rules, promotional leaflets and circulars, financial material and a relatively large amount of correspondence. A smaller amount of material survives for the National Union of Scientific Workers including rule booklets, membership lists, reports from meetings, agenda and promotional leaflets and circulars. Only a few items are preserved in this collection for the Federation of Technical and Scientific Associations and the Cambridge Research Group. The published articles and reports at AT/5 mainly concern issues related to the funding, support and the general state of scientific research. As a whole the collection reveals many problems faced by those who wished to organise research work after the first world war, such as the problem of rival organisations created to promote research whose aims overlapped, and disagreements over how and whether research could be organised. For example a letter from the Royal Society to the Scientific Research Association commented that 'lines of development' were 'discovered not by councils or committees but by the instinct of individuals, and the less this is trammelled by organization the better' (AT/2/6/1/42). The article 'Research and Organisation' at AT/2/3/15 was written in an attempt to answer such criticisms by arguing that research could be organised. Other issues also surface in the correspondence of the Scientific Research Association. For example one letter opposed support for any scheme founded on government funding as 'government endowment will, in the long run, corrupt Science...' (AT/2/6/2/17). There were also disagreements as to whether emphasis should be laid upon 'the promotion of scientific research' or 'the economic interest' of research workers which seems to have contributed to a division between the National Union of Scientific Workers and the Scientific Research Association (AT/2/4/3).

Records of the Tailors Benevolent Institution. Despite a few gaps in the minute books, the most regrettable being the absence of the first minute book, the records give a clear picture of the development of a trade benevolent enterprise. The gaps are in part compensated for by the survival of accounts and cash books from the foundation of the institution and by a diary for 1837 belonging probably to the first secretary. The records are in good condition.

Records of the Sutton Housing Trust, consisting of a fine series of minutes and accounts. In particular there are detailed registers of tenants (including information on income and employment), hundreds of photographs of estates and developments and correspondence giving advice from people such as Octavia Hill and Charles Booth.

The archive consists of typescript copies of 14 letters by Anthony, typescript copies of newspaper articles by her, and press cuttings, list of public memorials created up until 1949 and typescript background documents including typescript articles on and manuscript note by sculptor Adelaide Johnston, programmes. The records consist of 3 folders, containing loose documents copied by the Susan B Anthony Memorial Committee of California.

Records of the Samuel Lewis Housing Trust and the The Women's Housing Trust, including records of Samuel and Ada Lewis including property records and records of other trusts and societies with which they were involved. There are also oral history tapes and papers relating to the project undertaken in 2001 for the centenary celebration.

The archive consists of the following.

Executive Committee: minutes including a report from Lady Malmesbury's Committee of Enquiry and a draft letter; Finance Committee: volume of minutes and unbound duplicate minutes; minutes of the shipping, Rhodesia, Rhodes Hostel, Transvaal, Orange River, Cape Colony and Natal subcommittees; Annual Reports: 1903-1905, 1908-1909, 1910-1912, 1913-1916, 1916-1919; volumes of correspondence.

The records of the South African Accident Council include copy minutes, meetings papers and circulars of several of the South African accident associations, which were sent back to the South African Accident Council in London. These include records of: the Cape Accident Offices Association; the Transvaal Accident Offices Association; the Workmen's Compensation Insurers' Association of South Africa; the Accident Insurance Council of South Africa; the Southern Rhodesian Workmen's Compensation Insurers' Association; and the Accident Offices Association of Southern Africa.

Papers of the Souter family, including letters from the Stationers' Company to John Souter, 1818-1829; letters of administration for Mary Sowter of the Strand, 1834; and bill to John Souter for legal charges in enfranchisement of copy-holds in Lambeth Manor, 1845.

Minute books of meetings of donors to the Soup Kitchen for the Jewish Poor, Spitalfields, London, 1854-1872, with minutes of Finance Committee meetings, 1858-1871; correspondence and papers, 1857-1888, including printed accounts, 1857-1858, 1869-1872, 1883-1884, letters, 1871, 1887, and printed notices of meetings, 1888.

Records of the Soup Kitchen for the Jewish Poor, 1872-1980. The collection includes minute books of the general and other committees, and many account books, although there is little material which relates to the early days of the charity. There is a large amount of correspondence relating to all aspects of work of the charity.

Papers in the Socio-Legal Studies Association archive comprise the correspondence and papers, 1989-1996, of founder member and Chairman, Professor Martin Partington; the papers consist of his copies of agenda, minutes and papers of Executive Committee meetings, plus his own files of correspondence as founder member, fund raiser, organiser of the 1990 conference and Chairman; minutes, agenda and papers of Annual General Meetings, 1990-1994; papers and proceedings of annual conferences, 1993-1997; papers relating to the response of SLSA to the Economic and Social Research Council review of socio-legal studies, 1993; complete set of the Newsletter, 1989-1997, and Directory of Members, 1995-1997.

Records of the Society of Tacklehouse and Ticket Porters including court minutes 1632-1765 (extracts), and 1810-1844; members lists 1673-1869; ordinances and lists of pensioners.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ACCESS: These records are stored at the Guildhall Library site rather than the LMA Clerkenwell site. Researchers wishing to access these records should do so at the Guildhall Library Rare Books table. The Library is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 16:45. Researchers will need to have an Archives History Card or a Library Readers Card. An archivist will be available at Guildhall Library on Thursday mornings to answer any queries.

Society of Sugar Refiners of London records comprise: minutes, 1776-1818, and agreements, 1771-81.

Records of the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths, bell-ringing society, comprising: name books, 1747-1999 (Ms 21658, 33995); peal books, 1748-1989 (Ms 21659, 34393); minutes, 1887-1989 (Ms 33996), rules, 1931 (Ms 33997); and notebook of ringing methods, [1924-35?] (Ms 33998). They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff between 1986 and 2006.

Some of the records were microfilmed in 1985 and Mss 21658-9 are positive copy microfilms deposited in the Library on indefinite loan by the Society which has retained the master negatives. The originals of Ms 21658 and Ms 21569/1 were deposited on 21 July 2003 (USE OF MICROFILM COMPULSORY), but the Society retains the original manuscript of Ms 21659/2. Permission to take reproductions from the films or to publish extracts from the records should be sought from the Society (enquire at the information desk for contact details).
