Papers of Iris Murdoch, c 1981-c 1995, comprising letters to Sugana Ramanathan, responding initially to Ramanathan's letter expressing interest in Murdoch's books, which later developed into a literary friendship. The letters discuss Jesuits and a Jesuit College (presumably in India) and Murdoch's interest in this, as she has had 'many highly intelligent Jesuit pupils'; describe their first meeting, and reflect on Murdoch's works including the Gifford lectures.

Manuscript volume, 15th century: Breviarum Ad Usum Fratrum Minorum (Breviary for the use of Friars Minor).

Manuscript volume, 15th century, containing Bartholomew of Pisa's 'De Conformitate Vitae Sancti Francisci Ad Vitam Domini Jesu Christi' (On the conformity of the life of Saint Francis to the life of our Lord Jesus Christ) and lists of privileges etc granted to the Friars Minor (Franciscans), extracted from papal registers by Marcus Trevisanus, minister of the Roman province. The list is dated 1418 in the rubric on folio 313v.

Manuscript volume, c1300: Martyrologium (martyrology), for Franciscan use, with calendar tables.

Thirteenth-century manuscript volume. The back bears the inscription: Fragment of 13th century lectionary. The volume comprises fragments of two different manuscripts: Breviarium (breviary, ff 1-18), written for Franciscan use and including hagiographical texts; Missale (missal, ff 19-27v). Very fine miniature depicting the Crucifixion on folio 19r, missing the left hand figure.

Manuscript volume lettered 'Memoire de Finance' containing two works written in the same hand, probably mid 17th century, and attributed by an inscription on the fly-leaf to Charles de Marillac, Archbishop of Vienne (c 1510-1560) and his nephew, Michel de Marillac (1563-1632). The first section of the volume comprises three Gallican tracts, namely 'De patrimonio ecclesie', in Latin and French (latest date mentioned is 1646), arguing that secular patronage was the source of ecclesiastical wealth; 'Cura et authoritas in his quae pertinent ad fidem', defending control of the church by the Chritian prince, with much reference to the early church; and 'La Jurisdiction en generale est un pouvoir et autorite publique', arguing that independent ecclesiastical jurisdiction was confined to spiritual matters, citing papal and royal legislation up to 1639.
The second part of the manuscript contains a treatise entitled 'Du Conseil du Roy', in French and dated to [1611], being a discussion of the personnel, functions and rules of the King's Council (begins on folio 110 + 2, latest date 1629).
The attribution to the Marillacs is made in a later hand than that of the main text.

Also included are files of correspondence between CCSA and churches and religious organisations, affiliated support groups and British companies in South Africa. Papers also include those of the Oil Working Group, which contain material on the Royal Dutch/Shell Group; the mass lobby of Parliament (17 June 1986) for 'Sanctions against Apartheid' organised by CCSA; and the Ethical Investment Research Service, founded as an independent offshoot of CCSA.

They include published newsletters (1913-1938) from Ebenezer and Mabel Mann, detailing their work in Kansu province, China; parts of a typescript work by Ebenezer Mann relating to his years in China; autobiographical notes made by Mabel Mann; and a small collection of photographs of China including photographs (1920-1921) of the aftermath of the earthquake in Lanchow, Kansu province. Papers, 1933-1989, of David Lloyd Francis, comprising his diaries (1943, 1947-8) and correspondence concerning his work with the Melanesian Mission, the effects of the War on the Mission's work and his own work during this period. Later correspondence with the BBC is also included.

Papers, 1903-1992, including articles, reports and press cuttings, on Sokoto relate to geological history, prehistory, palaeontology, archaeology, pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial history, the subjects including the social and economic history of the city of Sokoto, colonial administration, British fears over Mahdism, and local government and economic issues in Sokoto state in modern Nigeria.

Three volumes contain over 500 postcards, many in colour, relating to Nigeria, including images of people, cultural events, various places, and other aspects of Nigerian life [late 20th century].

Papers and correspondence, 1949-1991, of Andrew Hake, accumulated during the course of his career in Kenya as an industrial missionary. The papers reflect the diversity of his work and interest in the urban and industrial community in Nairobi. The collection also includes publications collected by Hake, including Kenyan government publications and publications of the National Christian Council of Kenya.

Also included in this collection are records of the individual member synagogues; these comprise mainly membership records, but there are also administrative and financial records for some synagogues. Records of bodies connected with the United Synagogue to a greater or lesser extent are also included in this collection, such as the Office of the Chief Rabbi, London Beth Din and Beth Hamedrash, the Kashrut Commission and various Jewish friendly societies and charities. The United Synagogue's close links with Anglo-Jewish education are also represented in the collection, including records of individual schools such as the Jews' Free School. Records of the Association of Jewish Friendship Clubs, consisting of administrative and financial records (including minutes, enquiries and reports) for the association itself, and for specific areas and clubs. Also correspondence files for individual clubs, both overseas and in Britain.

A further deposit included an extensive run of office files regarding both the administration of the AJFC and relations with affiliated clubs; a large number of photographs of AJFC events such as a handicrafts exhibition, talent competitions, holidays, celebrations and meetings; copies of the "Friendship Club Magazine"; circular letters; club programmes; press cuttings; obituaries and club badges.

Correspondence of Chief Rabbi Nathan Adler, 1868-1901. A small number of records survive from around 1868 for the Chief Rabbinate of Nathan Adler and more from the late 1870s onwards - around the time Hermann Adler began to undertake many of his father's duties for him. The records consist of bundles of letters to the Chief Rabbi from communal organisations and individuals in Britain and overseas.

Records of the Federation of Synagogues, 1887 - 1988. The records include a comprehensive set of minutes of the Federation; a less comprehensive but nonetheless interesting collection of minute books from the individual congregations; and minutes of other institutions connected with the Federation. There are also financial accounts, reports, property files (including synagogue plans), notice books and correspondence files which give a fuller picture of life of the Federation; and records of the East London Mikvah Committee; Federation Burial Society and London Talmud Torah Council.

Organisational papers of the League of Jewish Women, including meeting minutes from various committees; reports; general administrative records; correspondence; papers relating to the organisation of various events and conferences; magazines and press cuttings; and films and photographs.

Records of the parish of All Hallows the Great, Upper Thames Street, City of London, including vestry minutes from 1574 and rate assessments from 1586. Other records include registers of baptisms, burials, banns and marriages; Churchwarden's papers; papers relating to charities; and Overseers' receipts and payments relating to the poor rate.

Records of the parish of Saint Bride, Fleet Street, City of London. The records include parish registers (baptisms, marriages, banns, burials, church services) from 1587, but the main archive dates from the 17th century, including vestry minutes from 1644 and poor rate and tithe rate assessments from 1666. Other records include Churchwardens' accounts and papers relating to parish charities.

Records of the parish of Saint Dunstan in the West, Fleet Steet, City of London. The records include parish registers (baptisms, marriages, banns, burials), Vestry minutes and Churchwardens' accounts, rate assessments and rentals, deeds and legal papers and records relating to the parish schools.

Records of the parish of Saint Giles Cripplegate, Fore Street, City of London. The main archive dates from the 17th century, but there are also parish registers (baptisms, marriages, banns, burials) from 1561 and estate records from 1553. The archive includes estate and charity material which relates jointly to Saint Giles and Saint Luke Old Street. Saint Luke was established in 1733 from the Middlesex part of St Giles.

Records of the Metropolitan Dispensary, Fore Street: The records comprise minutes of the managing committee, 1833-1924; ledger, 1854-88; and draft petitions and notes, 1854, [1857?].

Records of the Cripplegate Church Foundation: The records comprise minutes 1892-1959 and financial records 1892-1966. Further material relating to the Foundation may be found amongst other parish records: see Ms 25026-7 for meeting papers, 1945-53, and accounts authorised for payment, 1942-62; and Ms 6048/12 for minutes of joint meetings of the vestry and the Cripplegate Church Foundation, 1963-5.

Records of the Cripplegate Foundation: The records comprise minutes 1891-1954 and printed particulars of the constitution of various parish charities with list of meetings 1951-52.

Records of the parish of Saint Olave, Jewry, City of London, including registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns; Vestry minute books; Churchwardens' accounts; papers relating to the maintenance of the church building; poor rate books; and papers relating to parish charities and estates.

Three baptism registers from Caius College Mission have also been deposited. Although not yet catalogued, a Brief Book (1658-1778) is also available for consultation on self service microfilm X055/006.

This collection includes parish registers of baptisms, marriages, banns of marriage and confirmations (1898-1986); registers of services and orders of service (1896-1995); duplicate returns of parish statistics (1907-1931); correspondence relating to staff (1959-1994) and parish boundaries (1967-1981); documents, drawings and photographs relating to the church building and its contents (1867-1994); documents and plans relating to church halls (1930-1993); bishop's visitation papers (1966-1969), Parochial Church Council and Vestry minute books and correspondence (1888-2000); financial statements, account books and ledgers (1886-1999); records relating to Wooldridge Legacy Trust (1957-1984) and Sick and Poor Fund (1911-1927) and parish magazines (1898-1971).

Records relating to the Balham Estate of the Dean and Chapter of Ely comprising ground rents and financial accounts, 1884-1932.

Records of the London Diocesan Council for Welcare, 1962-1993, comprising annual reports of the London Diocesan Council for Moral Welfare, annual reports of the London Diocesan Council for Welcare and annual reports of local branch associations in Westminster, Willesden, Brent, Camden, Hampstead and Hounslow.

Records of the Union of Liberal and Progressive Synagogues (ULPS), dealing mainly with the creation of the new version of the prayer book Service of the Heart which was published in 1995. Rabbi John Rayner edited the new edition with Rabbi Chaim Stern as co-editor. Rabbi Julia Neuberger chaired the anthology committee. As well as aiming to combine general Jewish tradition with Progressive Jewish thought the editors wished to respond to changes in Jewish outlook in the late twentieth century. The use of language, in particular gender sensitivity, was carefully examined.
