Records of the church of Saint Mary the Virgin, Twickenham. This collection includes the parish registers of baptisms, marriages and burials (1538 - 1960); Churchwardens' accounts (1605/6 - 1848); Vestry meeting minute books (1618 - 1901) and Overseers' of the Poor accounts (1663 - 1679). Of particular note are: the Book of Briefs (1708 - 1760), which also includes a list of bonds, surrender certificates and indentures (DRO/174/B/02/001) and the survey of land-holding or real estates in the parish, made in 1661, which appears in the Churchwardens' account book (DRO/174/B/01/003).

Records of the Diocese of Southwark, 1742-2000. The collection relates to the area of London covered by the Diocese of Southwark south of the River Thames, dating mainly from 1905. It provides a wealth of information on church architecture and fixtures, sources for marriages and clergy (of particular use for family history), and the morals and conduct of clergy and their parishioners. Some records date from when parishes were under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Winchester (before 1877) and the Diocese of Rochester (1877-1904).

The records of Southwark Diocesan Regsistry include the following: grants of faculties relating to church buildings and fittings with a large number of coloured drawings and plans of churches, monuments, stained glass designs and other fittings (1905-2000); consecration and dedication papers including petitions and plans relating to new churches and burial grounds (1905-1976); ordinations and appointments of clergy (1878-1974); records relating to marriages including lists of marriage licences granted to couples intending to marry in churches within the Diocese of Rochester and Southwark (1877-1910, 1940-1958) and marriage warrants and affidavits recording the declarations made by parties intending to marry by licence (1905-1974).

Also records relating to visitations, the process by which the bishop maintained faith and discipline and corrected clerical and lay abuses, including lists of churchwardens (1924-1956), visitation returns (1907-1956) and presentment reports submitted by churchwardens on the state of church buildings and the conduct of clergy and parishioners in the parish (1905-1974).

The collection also contains minutes and property deeds from the Rochester and Southwark Diocesan Church Trust (1817-1966) relating to the College of Saint Saviour, Saint Olave, Southwark and All Saints, North Peckham, including correspondence relating to the removal of remains from the Flemish Burial Ground, adjacent to Saint Olave in 1842 (reference DS/CT); and minutes and related papers of Rural Deaneries of Dulwich, and Newington and Southwark (1869-1990) (reference DS/DRD).

Records of the Diocese of Winchester, 1480-1936. The archive collections relate mainly to parishes in the ancient county of Surrey, now in the dioceses of Guildford and Southwark and include: the records of the Archdeaconry of Surrey which had jurisdiction over the parishes in the ancient county of Surrey excluding 13 peculiars (administrative areas outside the jurisdiction of the bishop), including Bishop's Transcripts for parishes in the archdeaconry, the issue of licences including marriage bonds and allegations and clergy's licences, registry material, church consecrations and dedications, dissenters' meeting house certificates, and terriers of church property in each parish.

Also the records of the Archdeaconry Court of Surrey, consisting of court probate material including wills; the records of the Commissary Court of Surrey, including the bishop's commissary court probate records including wills and cause papers in court proceedings; and a small collection of office papers of the Archdeaconry of Winchester relating to parishes in Hampshire.

Personal papers of James Beal, local government reformer. The collection comprises correspondence with and concerning James Beal. Except where stated to the contrary, the letters refer to governmental matters: those in F/BL/12 refer to the presentation made to James Beal for his services to Local Government. The presentation volume includes press cuttings, invitations, menus and similar printed ephemera.

Records of the Bassishaw Friendly Association, later known as Bassishaw Ward Club, comprising rules, minutes, correspondence and accounts. They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff in 1989 and 1991.

Records of the Aldersgate Ward School. The records comprise minutes, admission and attendance registers, log books and report books, records of payments to children, accounts, deed of trust and inspector's reports and deeds and estate papers. They have been catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff at various dates.

Records of the Billingsgate and Tower Wards Schools. Tower Ward School records only survive from 1836. The records comprise attendance registers and log books, minutes, estate papers and accounts.

Records of the Bridge, Candlewick and Dowgate Wards Schools, comprising subscribers annual general meetings minute book; and lease and asbstract of title of the schoolhouse, 13 Swan Lane.

Records of the Cornhill and Lime Street Wards School, comprising minutes of the Committee of Management; treasurer's journals; financial accounts and roll commemorating laying of first stone of the new school building (1846).

Farringdon Within Ward Schools records comprising a register of sermons preached for the benefit of the children, and volume of accounts.

Records of the City Chamberlain, Corporation of London, including return of pensions paid by the Corporation; receipts for rents and rates paid; papers relating to Freedoms of the City of London; assessments of subsidies; quinquennial valuation lists; papers relating to duties and rates.

Collection of papers relating to the Corporation of London, including legal cases, legal opinions, and legal precedents; papers relating to the "Quo Warranto" proceedings against the City; papers relating to civil defence; property transactions such as deeds and leases; illuminated addresses; notes on the customs, privileges, constitution and history of the Corporation; reports and minutes; and translations of charters.

Records of the Middlesex Sessions of the Peace comprising extracts from minutes of the orders of court relating to County business. The extracts were first made in 1819 for the period 1716-1829. Only two entries were made between 1826 and 1829.

Records of the church of Saint Margaret, Uxbridge, comprising the foundation charter of a perpetual chantry for one chaplain [Walter Shiryngton?], 1459.

Records of the London History Workshop, 1984, consisting of slide carousels relating to the 95th birthday cake exhibition and files of research relating to the history of London government.

Records of the church of Saint Mary, Hendon, comprising drawing of litany desk.

These records contain material dealing with all aspects of County Medical Officers' work. The broad categories are: minutes, 1902-1907 and 1918-1974; correspondence, 1939-1974; plus a few photographs and miscellaneous items, 1905-1972.

Among the papers are several boxes of records generated by Dr Ramage's role as Association of County Medical Officers of Health representative on the Public Health and Housing (subsequently Health and Welfare) Committee of the County Councils Association. These consist of minutes and other circulated papers and subject files of correspondence, etc. As these records are not duplicated in the holdings of the Association of County Councils (formerly the County Councils Association) they have been retained as of considerable interest on local government health matters.

The archive consists of awards and certificates presented to Lowe, a commemorative album describing her achievements, various photographs, medals, memorabilia, press cuttings and publications.

Papers of Ann Carlton, primarily relating to her work as Local Government Officer for the Labour Party between 1967 and 1974. There are also some papers from the late 1950s and early-mid 1960s when Michael Ward and later Joan Bourne were Local Government Officer. The collection primarily consists of papers from various groups and committees Carlton and her predecessors were involved with, particularly the Labour Party Home Policy sub-committees relating to local government, which the Local Government Officer was Secretary of. These were the Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1959-1960 and 1963-1964), the Regional and Local Government Advisory Committee (papers from 1965-1970), and the Regional and Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1970-1971). Carlton was also Secretary for the Association of Municipal Corporations Labour Group (papers from 1963-1973). Other papers relate to a Study Group on the Maud Report on the Management of Local Government (papers from 1964 and 1967), the Association of Education Committees and its future (papers from 1973-1974), and the reorganisation of local authority associations (papers from 1973). There are also copies of papers circulated to Labour groups from 1968-1972, and correspondence and press cuttings relating to Ann Carlton's work.

The papers have a particular focus on proposals to reorganise local government in the 1960s and 1970s, and the impact of this on local authority associations. The topics of housing and town planning, local government conferences and local elections also feature heavily.

This catalogue includes minutes of the Metropolitan Borough and the Council committees. The collection also includes deeds of properties purchased by the Borough Solicitor, rate books, records of the Surveyors Department, including drainage plans for the Borough as well as files of the Town Clerk.

Transcripts relating to local taxation in Edinburgh from 1745 to 1760, including:

1. 'Memorandum offered by the members of the College of Justice appointed by the Faculty of Advocates and Society of Writers to the Signet to the preses and other remanent stent-masters of the city of Edinburgh in relation to the imposing the stent on the inhabitants of the town for the year 1749'. The memorandum, dated 18 July 1749, contains eight questions put to the stent-masters, and these are answered in the following eight pages of the manuscript, written for the most part in another hand, and dated 19 July 1749.
2. A 'Report to the Faculty of Advocates of the stent-masters appointed by them to meet with the stent-masters of the town of Edinburgh for imposing the stent or cess for the year 1749', written in the second hand. A note in the original hand says that the reports were 'drop'd'.
3. Comments on the collusion between the Faculty of Advocates and the Town Council regarding the stent-masters, with a copy of a letter to George Chalmers, writer to the Signet, from Robert Thomson of Aberdeen, dated 13 Feb 1745, concerning stents at Aberdeen.
   4. The final leaf, dated 14 Jul 1760, contains in a third hand an 'Estimate of the land cess and trade stent to be imposed by the...Magistrats & Town Council of Edinburgh for the service of the year, viz. from 25 March 1759 to 25 March 1760'.
