Collection also includes records of the Fraternity of St Eligius (MS 02883 and 05535, ca 1424 and 1496, 2 production units). An inventory of goods belonging to the Fraternity of St Loye at Blacksmiths' Hall dated 1496 survives in a volume of Blacksmiths' Company wardens' accounts [GL Ms 2883/1]. It includes three garlands [caps] bearing an image of St Eligius, which almost certainly were used to crown the incoming master and wardens. This is apparently the last documented reference to the Fraternity and its subsequent history is unknown.

Ms 5535 was deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library by the Farriers' Company in 1949. Ms 2883/1 was amongst records deposited by the Blacksmiths' Company in 1929 and 1946. Both volumes now form part of the archive of the Blacksmiths' Company Catalogued at various dates by members of Guildhall Library staff.

The collection includes a number of papers of John Harrison (1693-1776), describing his construction of longitude timekeepers and watches. These papers were catalogued at various dates from 1918 by members of Guildhall Library staff. The records include description, with plans, by John Harrison, of his first longitude timekeeper or"sea clock"; papers relating to the horological inventions of John Harrison, collected by Alexander Cumming (ca. 1732-1814), clockmaker, by virtue of his appointment by Act of Parliament to adjudicate on Harrison's explanation of the mechanisms of his longitude time keeper "H 4"; journal, 1761-6, relating to the testing of John Harrison's chronometer for the determining of longitude at sea in accordance with a statute of 12 Queen Anne, chapt. 15, by Walter Williams; essays, notes and calculations by John Harrison, and his son William Harrison; and letters mainly from William Harrison, statements, cases etc relating to the tests at sea of John Harrison's longitude watches and his efforts to win an award from the Board of Longitude. LMA/4662/LVNH/01 Governance records (1826-1996) comprising documents of the foundation of the 'Victuallers Asylum', and minutes of committees including a complete set of from the Board of Management minutes from 1826-1962.

LMA/4662/LVNH/02 Finance (1827-1976)

LMA/4662/LVNH/03 Administration (1828-1984) including rules and regulations; papers of Alfred Annett former Secretary; papers relating to property owned the LVNH and a Register of residents at some LVNH homes 1924-1990.

LMA/4662/LVNH/04 Membership and Subscription (1834-1989) a series of ledgers recording the names of those who subscribed to the Licensed Victuallers Asylum and then the LVNH.

LMA/4662/LVNH/05 Licensed Victuallers Asylum, Peckham (1828-1960) papers relating to the Asylum in Old Kent Road, Camberwell. The series includes the petitions of individuals seeking residence in the Asylum (arranged alphabetically and these have been indexed by name); a registers of residents at the Asylum 1827-1960; papers relating to the Asylum Chapel from 1847; and a small series of photographs and prints including an album of photographs of the asylum chapel, memorial tablest and portraits of chairmen.

LMA/4662/LVNH/06 Residential Homes: Denham Garden Village (1958-2001) includes an interesting series of pocket books giving information on the homes and a series of photographs mainly of the annual garden party held in Denham.

LMA/4662/LVNH/07 Residential Homes: Edinburgh Estates (1960-1980) a series of photographs of other estates run by the LVNH.

LMA/4662/LVNH/08 Publicity and Media (1877-2004) includes a set of press cutting scrap books from 1887-1957, publications and examples of souvenir programmes and magazines produced by LVNH, and a series of photographs of LVNH events including the change of keys ceremony and fundraising.

LMA/4662/LVNH/09 Beer and Wine Benevolent Society (1834-1968) covering its foundation, Governance, finance until it merged with the LVNH in 1968. Also includes papers and plans about the asylum they ran, a 1954 annual report and a few photographs.

LMA/4662/SLV/02 Finance (1894-1986) balance sheets and audit reports.

LMA/4662/SLV/03 Administration (1924-1985) including lists of Governors and Chairmen 1827 - 1964)

LMA/4662/SLV/04 Membership and Subscription (1858-1948) includes registers of members subscribing to the Society.

LMA/4662/SLV/05 Morning Advertiser (1783-1985) includes copies of the Morning Advertiser Annual 1979-1985.

LMA/4462/SLV/06 Schools (Kennington, Slough and Ascot) (1898-2003) includes school registers 1893-1960, school prospectuses from 1937-2000, a series of photographs mainly from and of the Slough school

LMA/4662/SLV/07 Licensed Trade Convalescent Homes (1970-1997) a short series including a register including a register of residents.

LMA/4662/SLV/08 Publicity and Media (1933-2003) covering programmes and menu cards from SLV events, publications including newsletters, histories of aspects of SLV and a series of photographs mainly portraits of past Governors, Chairs and Committees.

The collection includes minutes (with the exception of three volumes for 1837-1843, 1866-1884 and 1896-1905 which are noted as missing in the later minute books), rules and papers from the society including reference to insuring the society silver and stories from members.

The minutes are very detailed and provide an exception insight into the pawnbroking trade; shared stories reflect concerns of the time. There are accounts of losing money on pledges, bulgaries, fraud as well as discussions on the impact of legislation on the business and the state of the trade generally. References to the type of items being pawned also show the changing value of goods over the period of time.

The minutes cover both the First World War and the Second World War and show how the pawnbroking businesses were affected during these period of time, for example during the First World War it was recorded in October 1916 that one member raised the question of whether field glasses could be taken in pledge, in February 1919 a discussion was had on the effects of demobelisation and wages and in March of 1920 they discussion the issue of being offered firearms as a pledge items and how one member had recently sold to the Ministry of Munitions two army revolvers.

The Second World War saw meetings abandoned for a short time with members raising concerns about holding what could be deemed as a 'social gathering' in war time being recorded in the February of 1940 and in May 1941 there are detailed discussions between the members concerning the effect of fire, caused by air raids on jewellery and valuables in safes which was following the next month by discussions of the position of pawnbrokers regarding war damage insurance in respect of goods that they were holding on pledge. An entry from November 1941 shows the effect of not wrapping purchased goods when a member, Mr Norris remarked that the about of pilfering by the public in the sales shops had increased since the order prohibiting the use of paper for wrapping up goods sold to customers which meant that it was not easy to detect thieving as there was noting to show at a glance whether the article had been purchased or not.

Records of the Royal Caledonian Education Trust from its inception, including records of the Royal Caledonian Asylum and School LMA/4710/D, the Gaelic Chapel LMA/4710/E, the Society of Old Caledonians LMA/4710/F, including copies of the groups magazines. Also includes Records of Governance LMA/4710/A including Court of Governors and Directors minutes, Finance records LMA/4710/B and early accounts, as well as records of early subscribers to the school; Records of Administration LMA/4710/C these include the Secretary’s correspondence and the main series of registers of petitions and admissions of the pupils to both the Asylum and School dating from 1819; Records of the Asylum and School, including class registers, log books and reports of the school staff (Headmaster, Matron, School Mistress and Medical Officer) . There are also a large series of photographs of pupils and school events as well as a series of scrap book and press cuttings covering school events, Clan days and sports days and the Caledonian Ball.
