Records of the Putney Society's actions, decisions, and finances, including: financial records and minutes, agendas, reports, and notes for meetings of the society and its executive committee, subcommittees, and panels. There are also Society publications and mailings, including the Putney Society Bulletin and the Putney Society Review, photographs, scrapbooks and newspaper cuttings, working files and subject files. External research documents include documents produced by outside organisations and used or consulted by members of the Putney Society; most are consultation documents produced by the London Borough of Wandsworth, the Greater London Council, or central government, but there are flyers, leaflets, and other items produced by pressure groups.

The archives comprise of the administrative records of the College and its predecessor bodies from 1841. The archive also includes personal and asylum records donated by former prominent Members and Fellows of the College, and some printed material in the form of booklets containing histories of mental hospitals, reports of Commissioners in Lunacy, reports on London County Asylums and Parliamentary Papers on Mental Health. Specifically, the records include:

Foundation Papers: Papers of the Association of Medical Officers of Asylums and Hospitals for the Insane (the first predecessor body of the College); Circulars received by Dr Jones of Chester announcing the preliminary meeting of the Association, with minutes of the preliminary, first and second meetings, 1841 and 1842. Announcements of Association meetings in the 1850s and 1860s; report of the Special Committee to consider the Government's Bills for the Amendment of the Laws relating to the Care and Treatment of the Insane, 1859.

Minutes and related papers: on the foundation of the Association of Medical Officers of Asylums and Hospitals for the Insane, 1841 and minutes of meetings, 1841-54, excluding 1845, 1846, 1848, 1849 and 1853 when there were no meetings. Annual meeting minutes have been abstracted onto a Meetings Database. The database can be accessed from the College Library online catalogue. There are no manuscript minutes after 1854 as the Journal of Mental Science was started in that year and the minutes printed in the journal became the official record. Financial information contained in the minutes was also considered the official record and there are no separate financial papers.

Administrative papers, correspondence and circulars: of The Medico-Psychological Association 1870s-[1920], including a few papers on nursing and other examinations, asylum officers superannuation, insanity as grounds for divorce, letters of congratulation, meeting programmes and abstracts, dinner invitations, and menus.

Council minutes, 1887-November 1971: with a few supporting papers, e.g. agenda. An acting sub-committee (also referred to as the managing committee) was appointed at the 1856 annual meeting and there are references to council meetings in the 1860s but no minutes before 1887 have been found. There are some omissions after 1887, especially in the early years but it is not clear if this was because there was no meeting or because no minutes were taken. Council minutes 1887-1971 have been abstracted onto the Meetings Database.

Minutes and some papers of the Appeals and Buildings Committee, 1972-1974, Appeal Committee 1974-1987, Appeal Advisory Committee, 1989-1990 and Appeals Committee, 1992-1994; Correspondence with contributors (mainly major donors) to the Appeal and on administrative matters, 1971-1979, including the formation of a College chapter in North America and opposition in divisions to a London headquarters; agreement with Craigmyle, 1988.

Mental Nursing Papers

The Nursing Certificates: The Certificate of Proficiency in Mental Nursing was founded at the Medico-Psychological Association Annual Meeting in 1890 and until 1921 was the only recognised qualification in mental nursing. A separate certificate in Mental Deficiency Nursing was instituted in 1919 and a short-lived Occupational Therapy Certificate was introduced in 1939. After negotiations with the General Nursing Council, the examinations for these certificates were discontinued, the last being held in 1951.

The archive consists of transcripts of interviews with members of the Women Against Pit Closures group collected by Betty Heathfield, relating to their involvement in the 1984-1985 miners' strike. It includes a draft of an unpublished book by Betty Heathfield about the strike entitled 'Women of the Coalfields' based on these oral history interviews. This portion of the collection is available in the form of transcripts that have been anonymised to protect the identity of the interviewees.

The archive also consists of transcripts of oral history interviews, collected by Betty Heathfield, with older members of the Women's Co-operative Guild (WCG) and working papers and drafts on the history of the Guild; papers relating to the WCG and Age Exchange Theatre Company, 1983. The archive consists of eight letters of condolence written to Myra Stedman on the death of her mother, Myra Sadd Brown (Apr 1938). Members of the Women's Freedom League, the St Joan's Alliance and the British Commonwealth League expressed admiration of Mrs Sadd Brown's personality and her work in the women's movements. The archive also contains two photographs: one of the medal awarded to Myra Sadd Brown on her release from Holloway in 1912, with the inscriptions 'For Valour' and 'Hunger Strike' (medal held in Melbourne Museum, Australia); one of a drawing of Sadd Brown by fellow suffragette Jessie Mothersole, at a suffrage meeting, c. 1912 (original drawing held by the donor).

The archive consists of diaries, correspondence, photographs and memorabilia relating to Holme's activities as a suffragette; her work with the Women's Volunteer Reserve and the Scottish Women's Hospital Unit during the First World War; her visits to and relief work in Serbia / Yugoslavia; and her personal life and friendships. The catalogued Pamphlet Collection comprises over 12,000 titles dating from approximately 1830 to the present. The Pamphlet Collection consists of printed material less than 60 pages in length and includes government policies, reports, annual reports and campaigning material, primary law, including Bills and Acts. The subject material of the collection reflects and enriches the wide range of topics held elsewhere in the Women's Library.The topics covered include: English fiction, children's stories, poetry, women's organisations, feminism, role of women in society - UK and abroad, nursing, sex discrimination law, divorce law, employment, occupations, careers, equal opportunities, labour law, pension law, social security, taxation, housing, health, pregnancy, abortion, birth control, domestic violence, mothers, one-parent families, children, family life, housekeeping, religion, ordination, arts, costume, suffrage. Organisations include Equal Opportunities Commission, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital, National Union of Suffragettes, National Society for Women's Suffrage, US Women's Bureau, American National Red Cross, Union of Jewish Women, National Union of Townswomen's Guilds, National Federation of Women's Institutes, Fawcett Society, National Council for the Unmarried Mother and Her Child, British Federation of University Women, Association of University Women Teachers, Divorce Law Reform Union. Most of the material is in English, but there are also pamphlets in other languages, such as Italian, German and French.The pamphlets are arranged in two sections - one for standard sized pamphlets and one for oversized pamphlets.

The 'UDC Pamphlet Collection' [Universal Dewey Decimal Classification]: In addition to the main Pamphlet Collection is the 'UDC Pamphlet Collection.' The UDC collection was the first pamphlet collection created by the Library and consists of approximately 10,000 pamphlets dating from mid nineteenth to mid twentieth centuries, covering all subjects. As the collection was gradually acquired during the Library's first 20 years of life, it was arranged by subject, using the Universal Decimal Classification system. The pamphlets were primarily deposited by organisations and individuals, although some purchases were made. There is a finding aid kept with the collection but the collection was never catalogued and therefore remained a hidden resource within the Library for more than 80 years. Unsurprisingly other libraries did not collect most of these pamphlets. In 2007 as part of a cataloguing funding bid preliminary sampling of the collection against Copac (the merged online catalogues of 24 university research libraries in the UK, plus the British Library and the National Library of Scotland) found that over 60% of the UDC pamphlets were not listed in these major research collections. This is a very significant level of unique printed material.Cataloguing of the UDC collection started in 2007 and as the pamphlets are catatogued, they are transferred to the main pamphlet collection described above. As at 2009 the collection was partially catalogued and The Library was seeking additional funds to complete the project.

Two scrapbooks of documents, newspaper cuttings and photos collected by Sir Jethro Justinian Harris Teall and his wife Harriet, 1876-1926.

Many items relate to Teall's life, with events including his honorary degrees, lectures he gave, dinners he attended, and invitations to occasions such as the funeral of Edward VII and the coronation of George V. There is also a great deal of material relating to his younger son Frederick Teall, particularly his time in the Cambridge University Athletic Club and his subsequent career in the Egyptian civil service and participation in tennis tournaments in Cairo. There are a few items relating to Teall's wife, Harriet, and his elder son, George Teall, who was in the army.

The first volume mostly dates from Teall's time as director of the Geological Survey, while the second relates to the latter part of Teall's directorship of the Geological Survey and his subsequent retirement activities.

(1) Letter from Eyre Massey Shaw of the Metropolian Fire Brigade, Watling Street, London to Mr Fraser, 21 Mar 1872. Explaining that he is unable to inspect premises unless invited to do so by the occupants. The law allows 'your neighbours to set their premises on fire, & then, but only then, I have full power to break in & interfere. The moment the place is cool I must walk away ...'.

(2) Letter from Eyre Massey Shaw of the Fire Brigade, Southwark, London to Miss E S Busk, 13 Jul 1889. Stating that Mr G W Gamble, who had applied to Miss Busk for books, was thoroughly respectable, but 'he is not the whole institution', and advising her to lend the books, and then, if the 'society is likely to endure', to turn the loan into a gift; [the society mentioned has not be identified].

Both letters are autograph, with signatures.

Manuscript volume containing the rules of the Agreeable United Fair (Friendly Society), a women's society intended to provide relief in the event of sickness or old age. The Society was held near Fetter Lane, Holborn, London. The rules are signed by fifteen members, six of whom give a mark in place of a signature, c 1785.

Manuscript letter, dated 22 February, 1643, containing an Order of the Committee of Revenue to Thomas Fauconbridge, Receiver of Crown Revenues, to pay 'the poore Pewterers or Hammer men' of London the sum of £100, due to them by virtue of an Act of Parliament. The letter is signed by members of the Committee for Revenue, including Sir Henry Vane, Sir Henry Mildmay, Francis Rous, William Ashhurst, Thomas Hoyle and Dennis Bond. With a receipt dated 27 February 1643, bearing 56 signatures or marks and the signature of Robert Leeson, Warden of the Worshipful Company of Pewteres.

A history, c1826, and copies of three Royal Licences permitting it to enlarge its stock. Both the history and the licenses are in the same hand.

Papers of E Duval, 1924, comprising 2 volumes titled MS Extracts on Teeth. E. Duval. Vol. I. 1924, and MS Extracts on Teeth. E. Duval. Vol II. 1924. Containing notes on various aspects of teeth and dentistry such as dental diseases and treatments; instrument and tooth makers; dental and odontological societies; and the obituaries of dentists and dental surgeons. The extracts are mostly taken from journals and books of the mid to late 19th century.

Certificates of Election and Candidature for the Royal Society. Early certificates are entirely manuscript, i.e. vols. 1-8 (1731-1840). Printed forms of ordinary certificates appear in volume 9 from November 1839 (candidates elected in 1840); printed forms for 'privileged class' elections were used from 1875, and for Foreign Membership from 1895. Not all certificates represent elected Fellows; a small percentage are for unsuccessful candidates.

A collection of medals and tokens, largely scientific awards, but with some miscellaneous items in base and precious metals. The core of the series consists of specimens of the Royal Society's own 15 medals and awards, from the earliest (the Copley Medal 1731) to the most recent (the Gabor Medal 1989). This includes some given to named Fellows and returned to the Society as gifts or bequests. Other items include prizes of foreign scientific academies, and pieces commemorating individual Fellows and Foreign Members.

Original of letters sent to the Royal Society, generally on official business, and usually to Officers or Assistant Secretaries. The collection is effectively in two parts; letters for the period 1800-1899 are bound as 17 volumes; those for 1903-1925 are held unbound in boxes. The full sequence forms a single chronological archive with only occasional gaps, the most notable being the complete absence of the years 1900-1902 and 1920. From 1885, the series may be used in conjunction with the New Letter Books, which contain the corresponding outgoing letters.
