Records of R S Murray and Company Limited, sweet manufacturers, including recipe books, reports and related correspondence. The recipe books include details of product development, specifying appropriate ingredients and methods. Other papers concern H.J. Norton, who was Managing Director of R.S. Murray and Co. Ltd from 1914-1940s.

Records of Stephen Green Limited, patent medicine manufacturer, 1780-1930. The records relate to proprietorship of the recipe for "Doctor Johnson's Golden Ointment" including legal documents and legal case papers; and records relating to the manufacture and sale of the ointment including financial accounts, order books, correspondence, sales summaries, testimonials, advertising, legislation involving patent medicines and history of the ointment. Also various family and estate records.

Minute book of the Amicable Debating Society, 1843-45.

Papers collected by the antiquary George Scott. As well as catalogues of Scott's library (and many printed books) the collection includes George Scott's financial accounts; extracts from forest laws; abstracts of Treasury accounts; register of Queen Elizabeth I's out-letters; orders relating to the Cinque Ports; and a book of prescriptions. Papers of George Macdonald consist of a diary and photograph albums of malaria eradication work in Malaysia, Singapore and Ceylon with Sir Malcolm Watson, 1937; diaries of his work in Italy and Sicily during World War Two; photographs of malaria control measures during World War Two in the Middle East, Egypt, Algiers, Crete, Sicily, Cyprus and Greece and a personnel file relating to his appointment to the Ross Institute, his overseas visits and his death.

'Garth Smithies Taylor, 1896-1916', written by his sister Dorothea Taylor in 1971, and principally comprising copies of original documents, 1914-1917 and 1959, mainly letters to his family, 1914-1916, and extracts from his diary, 1914-1916, relating particularly to his service near Ypres, 1916, and in the Battle of the Somme, 1916.

Thompson's correspondence with Maj Sir Desmond John Falkiner Morton (1943-1976), Maj Gen Eric Edward Dorman O'Gowan (formerly Eric Edward Dorman Smith) (1960-1974) and Capt Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart (1952-1974). The letters mostly relate to Thompson's military writing and concentrate on his studies of on Rt Hon Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill and FM Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein.

Papers of Mary Ethel Corry Knocker,1912-1925, including unpublished typescript memoir entitled 'Through shadows and sunshine, 1914-1918', diaries, 1912-1921, and memorabilia, including photographs, 1912-1925, mainly relating to her nursing training and service as a nurse on the Western Front during the First World War.

'Reminiscences of the Hospital at the Corner', St George's, Hyde Park, by Pamela Mary Clewett as a probationer nurse, 1939-1945. This is an autobiographical account of what it was like training as a nurse at St George's and elsewhere during the war years.

Papers of Norah Woodman, 1906-1938, comprising an account of her training as a nurse in 1906; miscellaneous material on the Lambeth Infirmary/Hospital, including annual reports, 1921-1938; financial statements of the Parish of St Mary, Lambeth Board of Guardians, 1910-1929.

The collection includes material on several research projects undertaken by McCance and Widdowson, 1929-1993, as well as a small amount of personalia. There are notebooks recording the first research on analysis of foodstuffs carried out in the UK, started by McCance when at the Diabetes Department of King's College Hospital, after R D Lawrence asked him to analyse cooked foods. Widdowson joined him in 1933 and together they devised the separate methods for estimating different carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch and dextrose). In 1940 their findings were published as Chemical composition of foods, the first of now regularly produced Standard Food Composition publications. There are notebooks and photographs of self-experimentation undertaken within the department, on salt-deficiency, conducted by McCance on himself, colleagues and medical students, involving not only a salt-free diet, but exposure to a hot air bath to sweat the salt out of the body, and also on absorption and excretion of iron. There is also his diary of the experimental study of rationing undertaken in 1939. There are 220 complete questionnaires from their survey of female colleagues and acquaintances for a study of physical and emotional periodicity in women, undertaken 1929-1930. There are experimental notebooks and files relating to research into body composition and development from 1944 onwards. This collection represents only a part of the diversity of research undertaken during the course of their long careers.

Papers of Keith Hodgkin, 1939-1994, including index cards of lecture, ward round and case notes made while a student at the Radcliffe Infirmary and the Hammersmith Hospital 1939-1943, and patient records from his practice 1954-1979. There are also reports and surveys illustrating the use of practice records in research. His Family Record contains reminiscences and evaluation of his professional, as well as family life, and material relating to his grandfather's uncle, Thomas Hodgkin (1798-1866).

Material relating to Stuart Craddock's research while working with Alexander Fleming, 1909-2000, in particular on penicillin and acne, a personal manuscript memoir of Fleming, and correspondence with Fleming, Lady Fleming, Ronald Hare, Prof F Bustinza of Madrid, Norman Heatley and others, also some personalia.

MS. 3352: Copy dated c1805 of a journal of a voyage from London to Cochin-China, 11 September 1792-15 June 1793. Note on verso of leaf 2 signed 'J.B.' (Sir John Barrow (1764-1848), Secretary to the Admiralty, and founder of the Royal Geographical Society) states 'This journal was written by Lord Macartney on board the Lion merely for his own amusement and to pass away a few heavy hours on a very long sea voyage'. MS. 5746: Correspondence and papers relating to medical services in Madras, 1782-1787, comprising 2 letters to Macartney from John Ruding, surgeon, Chingleput, 1782, 1783; letter to Macartney from James Hodges, Masulipatam, 1783; letter to Macartney from George Bell (d.1789), surgeon, Tanjore, 1783; Committee Minute on a proposal by Macartney for a fixed establishment of surgeons, 1784; letter to Macartney from Terence Gahagan, surgeon, enclosing a copy of his plan for the reform of the medical department, Vellore, 1787 (the plan is addressed to Macartney's successor as Governor of Fort St George, Madras, Sir Archibald Campbell).

Rogers' holograph manuscript. Volume 1 is entitled 'Obituaries of eminent persons'. Volume 2 (dated on the title 1847) is entitled 'Obituary of eminent persons and private friends', and is illustrated by 32 tinted photographs. Among the photographs are those of: Sir Charles Hastings (1774-1866); Sir William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865); and Sir Joseph Paxton (1804-1865). The volumes contain numerous biographies of doctors and scientists who died during the period of the record. The obituaries include various figures of Australasian interest such as Sir Stamford Raffles (1781-1826); Rev. Daniel Tyerman, missionary; George Bennet, missionary (fl.1812-1841); Rev. Thomas Slatyer, missionary, Samoa; and Colonel Robert Torrens (fl.1837).Each volume contains a stipple engraved portrait of the compiler, and his armorial book-plate.

'Prolegomena philosophiae. Logica', 1757; Vol. ll. 'Metaphysica', 1757; III. 'Philosophia moralis', 1757; IV. 'Physica generalis', 1758; V. 'Physica specialis', 1758. At the end of the text of Vol. V. (p. 577) is an inscription by Gillet. 'Finis totius philosophiae die 29a jullii [sic] anno Domini 1758, sub illustrissimo Domino proffessore [sic] regio jacobo roberto correntino Corroller sacrae facultatis parisiensis bacalaurio theologo, ex urbe episcopali Quimper Correntin, in brittannia [sic] minori. Has lectiones philosophicas audivit joannes franciscus Gillet Lugdunensis in scholis academicis seminarii sancti iraenei [sic]. Lugdunensis a lu[per] calibus anni millesimi septingentesimi quinquagesimi sexti ad inducias usque academicas anni millesimi septingentesimi quinquagesimi octavi'. After 7 ll. of diagrams, etc., he adds: 'Il manqueroit quelque chose à ce cours de philosophie si je n'y adjoutois la chanson que j'ai faite sur ma sortie du Séminaire'. This is followed by 70 lines of verse. Produced in Lyons.

Diaries of Charles Frederick de Coetlogon, covering the years 1817, 1818, 1822, 1823, 1826, 1827, 1828, 1831, 1832, 1833-34 in part, and 1835. They are pocket sized and contain miscellaneous printed information. Each double page is divided into journal and account sections, and de Coetlogon meticulously records his personal accounts in the latter. His income is drawn from annuities and he constantly rebukes himself for living beyond his means. The accounts present a detailed picture of the price of food (fish sauce @ 2/-), domestic items (pins @ 3d.), servant's wages (£14. 14s. per annum), entertainment (opera ticket @ 8s. 6d.), and incidental expenses (hair cutting @ 1s. 6d.).

Papers of Thomas Raikes Trigge Thompson, comprising official letters mainly dealing with Capt TRT Thompson's encounter at Tahiti involving Queen Pomare and the French, 1843-1845 and his time on the coast of Central America, 1846; personal papers; papers relating to TRT Thompson's time on board HMS CADMUS; letterbooks and service papers.

Photocopies of four folders of correspondence relating to the disputes between Ian Hamilton Finlay and Fulcrum Press and with Coracle Press. In 1974 Ian Hamilton Finlay quarrelled with the Fulcrum Press over their First Edition of his 'The dancers inherit the party', which Finlay did not consider to be a true first edition. During 1976 the relationship between Finlay and Simon Cutts who was then running the Coracle Press and Gallery became strained with Finlay claiming that Coracle Press owed him money for his Wild Hawthorn Press publications which he had supplied to them for sale in their bookshop. He successfully sued them in Lambeth County Court. Part of the dispute also centred on articles and comments made by Ian Gardner in the publication 'Blue Tunnel'.

The Private War Journal of Generaloberst Franz Halder, Chief of the General Staff of the Supreme Command of the German Army, 1939- 1942 is a microfilmed copy of the desk journal of Generaloberst Franz Halder. In 1938, Generaloberst [Col Gen] Franz Halder took office as Chief of the General Staff of the German Army, Oberkommando des Heeres (OKH), openly declaring himself opposed to the Nazi leadership of the German Armed Forces. By 1939, however, Hitler had begun to direct much of the operational decision making of the OKH. Although Halder would continue to voice opposition to the more impractical military directives, he nonetheless complied with the strategic demands proposed by Hitler and the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW), the Supreme Command of the German Armed Forces. From 1938-1942, Halder's duties were confined to operational decision making and desk planning, analysing reports sent to him by his subordinates and conferring with officers of the Oberkommando des Heeres (OKH), the Supreme Command of the German Army, over administrative, operational, and logistical matters. Halder's short-hand notes and daily entries in his Kriegstagebücher summarised each day's work and acted as an aide mémoire to events, 1938-1942. The journal reflects the detail, routine, and bureaucracy encountered by Halder and his staff, as well as the decision making process between Halder, the General Staff, and Adolf Hitler. Kept by Halder personally, the journal should not be confused with the official War Diaries kept by the Supreme Command of the German Army. Intended to serve as a notebook, the diary does not furnish a complete record of all activities, 1939-1942; rather it reflects the German High Command decision making structure as well as the character of many German senior officers, including FM (Karl Rudolf) Gerd von Runstedt, FM Erich von Manstein, and Col Gen Heinz Guderian. After the war, the journal was introduced by the Prosecution as a documentary exhibit in the record of the case entitled the United States of America vs Wilhelm von Leeb et al, brought before Military Tribunal V (FM Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb, Commander Army Group North, was tried for minor war crimes in 1948). The journal was subsequently translated and reduced to typewritten form from the original notes under the guidance of Phillip Willner, Chief of the Reporting Branch (German) of the Office of Chief of Counsel for War Crimes, Office of the Military Government for Germany. It was then reviewed with Halder for continuity and published soon thereafter.

Papers relating to his service in South Africa, 1899-1901, notably including diary, Dec 1899-Jun 1900, describing operations in Orange Free State and Transvaal, Dec 1899-Jun 1900; letter books containing transcriptions of letters [to his family] describing operations in Orange Free State, Transvaal and Cape Province, Dec 1899-Sep 1901.

The collection consists of pamphlets written by Davidson, papers relating to his part in the Allied Military Mission to Moscow, USSR, 1939 and papers relating to his career in World War Two as Commander in the Royal Artillery and as Director of Military Intelligence. The World War Two material includes maps used in the retreat of the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) to Dunkirk, France, maps used as Director of Military Intelligence to illustrate the progress of the war to Queen Mary, mother of George VI and a personal diary kept while Director of Military Intelligence. There is also a file containing correspondence with E E Thomas of the Cabinet Office Historical Section relating to aspects of Military Intelligence during World War Two.
