      Biographical papers include obituaries, memoirs and papers relating to memorials including a service in the Chapel of Robinson College Cambridge, 10 Feb 2002; autobiographical papers including copy of Fröhlich's entry for Personal Records of Fellows of the Royal Society; papers relating to Fröhlich's career, honours and awards including his Ph.D. thesis 'On some topics in the theory of representation of groups and in class field theory', and correspondence and papers relating to his university appointments and some of his principal honours, including election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society.

      Research papers chiefly comprise mathematical workings, notes and drafts: notably relating to work on the decomposition of primes [1950] and work on Galois module theory and Gauss sums.

The scientific material in the collection centres on a run of student and laboratory notebooks for 1922-1965, together with files of notes and calculations on biological assay and other topics. Further papers concentrate on Gaddum's teaching and publications in the form of lecture scripts, typescripts of articles and related correspondence. Material on his administrative work includes correspondence on conferences and organizations, with some Royal Society papers, but also Physiological Society letters, 1936-1941. Non-paper records such as slides and personal souvenirs are also preserved.

      Letter from N Geary of Fareham, [Hampshire] to Mr Gunner, Waltham, Hampshire, 14 Jan 1815. Asking Gunner to remind the magistrates of the Droxford Bench that they were to inspect the public roads over the Forest of Bere, which Geary had made 'remarkably good'; but since 'the whole of the public money is expended, and the roads are getting bad', he asks the magistrates either to discharge him, or give 'assistance and support without which it will be impossible for me to proceed without much injury to the parishes, and disgrace to myself ...'.

      Papers of William Gelder including letters from Gelder to his parents in Wakefield, while a dispensing and visiting assistant to [R Lucie] Reed, surgeon, at Whitechapel Road, London, Mar-Nov 1832, and while in Edinburgh in the employ of Mr Cope, a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist and druggist, Mar-Aug 1834. Notebook begun by Gelder in Edinburgh in 1834, and continued on a tour through Lancashire, the Isle of Man, Ireland and Wales in 1835, and in trade in Yorkshire, 1836-1837. Containing verses, commonplaces, orders for medicines and other goods, and miscellaneous notes. Signature inside front cover, 'William Gelder, Apothecaries' Hall, Edinbro, 1834.' On the rear end-papers is a coloured engraving of Apothecaries Hall.

It includes sketches of operations for raising the wreck of the ROYAL GEORGE and coloured illustrations with notes of items salvaged by Colonel Sir Charles Pasley (1780-1861) from the ROYAL GEORGE and the EDGAR, 1839 to 1840; press cuttings and correspondence relating to the Benin Expedition, 1897; and press cuttings and watercolours of the Zeebrugge Raid, 1918, with a chart used on the occasion by Sub-Lieutenant (later Captain) Nevil Pritchard (fl 1900-1979) of the WHIRLWIND.

There are also documents recording the history of the Company, including records of General Steam Navigation Company ships and men in the two world wars, copies of parliamentary papers, newspaper cuttings and photographs. In addition, there are records of three companies acquired by G.S.N. Moss Hutchinson Line Limited: the records consist of Memorandum and Articles of Association, with attendant papers, 1934 to 1968; Directors' minute book, 1941 to 1971; annual returns, 1941 to 1965, return of Directors and Secretaries, 1954 to 1964; balance sheets and profit and loss accounts, 1916 to 1971. Those for the New Medway Steam Packet Co Ltd include Directors' minute books, 1919 to 1968; annual returns, 1920 to 1937; annual reports and balance sheets, 1931 to 1938; profit and loss accounts, 1929 to 1960; and ledgers, 1920 to 1960. Grand Union (Shipping) Limited: these include Memorandum and Articles of Association, 1937; Directors' minute book, 1937 to 1957; and balance sheets and profit and loss accounts, 1938 to 1966.
