The records were catalogued between 1908 and 1959 by members of Guildhall Library staff.

Papers of Richard Clark, Lord Mayor of London, comprising diaries, agendas, invitations, memoranda and other papers relating to the year of his mayoralty, 1784-85.

Records of Joseph Croskey, textile merchant, consisting mostly of financial accounts and correspondence, some relating to the business of Brunswick and Company, furriers.

These records were compiled or annotated by Samuel Gregory in the mid-19th century. They comprise: the "Lord Mayor's autograph book" which contains the original signature of every Lord Mayor from 1657 to the present date; notes and cuttings relating to Lord Mayors, Chamberlains, Recorders and aldermen; history and notes relating to liverymen of the Barber Surgeons Company; drawings of merchants' marks; and miscellaneous manuscript and printed items compiled by Gregory.

Records of Justice and Pattenden, solicitors, 1849-1935. Records of the firm include day books, letter books, bill books and one account book. Clients' papers include deeds relating to property, mainly in London and family and estate papers.

Records of James Lock and Company including series of day books (1781-1969, with gaps) and order books (1805-1998, with gaps). There were always two order books in use at any one time, one in the shop and one in the office, and as a result the dates overlap in many volumes. There is also a series of rough order books, called waste books (1798-1819), and special order books series for ladies' hats, for hunting wear and foreign and export orders. There are product statistics for 20th century. Very few product drawings, or fabric samples are included (for samples for special orders 1995-1998 see B/LK/422).

All these series contain similar elements of information, namely the customer's name and address, description of hat ordered and the total cost.

The collection also contains financial records, including ledgers, cash books, customer accounts and bad debts which summarise outstanding payments due from customers; staff salaries (1927-1954) (B/LK/619) and R Lincoln's executors account (B/LK/254).

Records of May May and Merriman, solicitors, 1711-1948, collected by the solicitors in the course of their work, comprising deeds and legal documents relating to the following estates or families: Allpress; Bacon; Chapple; Trustees of late Henry Clark; Captain Earl; Harvey; Morgan/Gooch; Newman; Pearson Trustees; Popham; Harper; General Popham; and Richards. Documents relate to property, financial dealings, marriages, bequests, bills and share dealing.

Records of Merry and Company, saddlemakers, 1883-1951, including letter books, ledgers, account books, wages books, order books containing clients' names, notes of their requirements (whips, racing equipment, sporting gear, etc.) and many specimens of coloured silks, order book for jockeys' race caps, and correspondence.

Records of Spalding and Hodge, stationers, 1781-1911; and subsidiary or merged companies including Busbridge and Hodge, papermakers and Suttaby and Company, booksellers. Also records of the Stationers' Book Society. The records include business agreements, legal documents relating to properties, wages books, cash books, stock books, bills, rules and regulations for staff, letters patent, brochures about Spalding and Hodge and their history, inventories, correspondence and price lists. Stationers' Book Society records comprise minutes, accounts, and an address by Thomas Spalding.

Papers of Cedric Jagger, historian of horology, comprising research notes for Jagger's publication on Paul Philip Barraud; and correspondence relating to clocks and watches to and from Cedric Jagger, arranged alphabetically by correspondent (makers, academics and experts, collectors, dealers, writers and booksellers).

Records of Gibb, Livingston and Company, merchants and agents, including articles of association, minutes of meetings, and financial records.

Kilburn, Brown and Company Limited records comprise: partnership deeds and agreement, 1943-59 (Ms 27775-6); accounts, 1938-66 (Ms 27777-81); and correspondence, 1947-60 (Ms 27782).

Records of Macneill and Barry Limited, general merchants and agents of Calcutta, India, comprising: records of Macneill and Company, 1908-67 (Ms 27851-63); Barry and Company, 1883-1944 (Ms 27864-73); Macneill and Barry Limited, 1905-78 (Ms 27874-86); Kilburn and Company Limited, 1942-65 (Ms 27887-91); Kilburn Properties Limited, 1960-5 (Ms 27892); Kilburn and Company (Pakistan) Limited, 1964 (Ms 27893); and Macneill and Kilburn Limited, 1963-4 (Ms 27894). The records include articles of association, deeds, annual reports, financial accounts, reports on business operations, plans, and photographs.

Records of James Vickers and Company, wine and spirit merchants, comprising financial records 1867-87 (Mss 24588-91); records drawn up on the transfer of the business to Edward Vickers including trade ledger balances, stock records and lists of fixtures and fittings 1877-87 (Mss 24592-5); deed dissolving the partnership of E and J Vickers with other papers 1863 and 1877 (Ms 24596); family and business papers and correspondence 1869-1912 (Mss 24597-602); and plans, leases and sales particulars relating to various properties 1867-91 (Mss 24603-5).

The business archives of Lambert Brothers Limited, coal and shipping merchants, consist mainly of material from 1902. The records comprise corporate records, records concerning shares, accounting and financial records, administration and legal records, personal staff records, and photographic records. London Fish Trade Association records comprise minutes, rules of the Association, accounts, material relating to frozen fish distribution and import schemes, and lists of members (incomplete date coverage).

National Federation of Inland Wholesale Fish Merchants records comprise rules (Ms 19848), consitution and rules (Ms 19849), minutes (Ms 19850) and annual accounts and balance sheets (Ms 19851).

Records of Charles Hobson, clock restorer, comprising workshop notes and diagrams (some photocopies) and photographs of Hobson in his workshop.

Archive of Hodder and Stoughton Limited, publishers; including records of Hodder and Stoughton, 1868-1919, Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1919- , Matthew Hodder Limited (group holding company), 1959-76, and Hodder and Stoughton Holdings Limited, 1976-. It is a publisher-based, rather than an author-based archive, because the pre-1939 correspondence with authors was apparently destroyed during the Second World War. Its strength lies in the information it provides in aggregate about the multi-faceted business of publishing.

Of notable importance are the 46 authors' ledgers, 1907-1961 (Ms 16312) which detail what was published, including the various editions of the same title, with dates of publication, print runs, production costs, sales, remainders etc. These are supplemented by ten volumes of publishing ledgers, 1886-1938 (Ms 16310), and by smaller groups of royalty ledgers, 1907-12 and 1928-65 (Mss 16318-21), and of profit and loss ledgers, 1954-68 (Mss 16313-17). The ledgers are further supported by considerable quantities of other material, such as company minutes, sales reports, publicity material, and a number of author files for 1939-93 (Mss 16352, 16352A-C). These are rather haphazard, and many in-letters from authors appear to have been removed before deposit at Guildhall Library.

The archive contains much about the company's premises including many photographs including some of bomb damage in the Paternoster Row and Warwick Square area of the City of London. The archive also contains material about the firm's employees including registers and salaries books, staff handbooks and newsletters, material about company sports days, and photographs.

The records of the subsidiaries sometimes form distinct series, but are often mixed with those of the parent company. In addition, some original archival groups were altered by the creation of artificial collections by John Attenborough in the course of writing his history (see Mss 16355-7, 16362, 29668-72).

The records also include some Hodder family documents including genealogical notes and some papers of the Publishers' Association.

Finally, the archive includes the private correspondence of Sir Ernest Hodder-Williams (chairman of Hodder and Stoughton 1902-27), described as "the greatest publisher of my time" by Sir Newman Flower (Mss 16368-70); and the papers of the last Chairman of the company, Philip Attenborough, who was responsible for depositing much of the later material and played a major role in safeguarding of the future of the archive.

The collection also includes a register of members of the International Produce Exchange (1926) Limited 1926-1927 and 1955-1956; its connection with the firm is unknown.
