Administration, minute taking, correspondence and general record keeping were the responsibility of the Town Clerk. The office of Town Clerk can be traced back to 1274, when it was referred to as the office of Common Clerk.

Also artifacts including the official grant of Corporation of London armorial bearings, 1957; a sound recording of Prime Minister Winston Churchill's Honorary City Freedom ceremony, 1943; a sound recording of General Dwight D Eisenhower's Honorary City Freedom ceremony, 1945; badge of a drover at the Metropolitan Cattle market, 19th century; badge of the City of London National Guard, 1914-1918; medal commemorating the visit of the Sultan of Turkey, 1867 and of the Shah of Persia, 1873; White Ensign from HMS LONDON, 1906; plate commemorating the 800th anniversary of the Mayoralty, 1989; and Royal seals of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Charles I and Charles II, which have become detached from documents.
