Correspondence of Chief Rabbi Nathan Adler, 1868-1901. A small number of records survive from around 1868 for the Chief Rabbinate of Nathan Adler and more from the late 1870s onwards - around the time Hermann Adler began to undertake many of his father's duties for him. The records consist of bundles of letters to the Chief Rabbi from communal organisations and individuals in Britain and overseas.

Records of the manor of Manor of Chipping Barnet and East Barnet, Hertfordshire. They include minutes, court rolls and rentals.

The papers relating to Sir Hugh Cloberry Christian all date from 1798 when he was second in command of the Cape of Good Hope station. They include official correspondence relating mainly to the day to day running of the station but particulaly to the mutiny and subsequent Court Martial concerning the East Indiaman, PRINCESS CHARLOTTE. The papers relating to Sir Hugh's son, Hood Hanway Christian, are more extensive. Apart from an order book from 1812, when Christain was the governor of the Spanish fort at Castro, they are mostly official correspondence from the period 1824-1828. These relate to the supression of the slave trade and various disciplinary proceedings together with correspondence from the Navy Board. There is a small amount of personal correspondence including letters from Sir Richard Keats and Sir Edward Pellew.

Papers of Hood Hanway Christian. The papers refer in the main to Christian's period at the Cape of Good Hope, with the exception of an order book from Castro in 1812. There is a section of letters of congratulation on his appointment, correspondents including Admiral Keats, Viscount Exmouth and the second Earl of Malmesbury. Also, there is a lengthy section regarding a court case which arose over Christian's impounding of the Portugeuse merchant ship GRATIDAO in 1826 The majority of the collection relates to the day to day running of the station, with correspondence to and from the Navy Office, Admiralty Office and also local offices, such as the Victualling Office and the ship yard at Simon's Town. There is also correspondence with local officials, such as the Governer of Mauritius, General Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, and the Lieutenant-Governer of Eastern Cape of Good Hope, Sir Richard Bourke, as well as his own captains - Charles Richard Dyke Ackland of HMS HELICON, and Sir David Dunn on HMS SAMARANG. Other items include the ill-fated British settlement on Mombassa, draft treaties with Radama I of Madagascar regarding the suppression fo the slave trade, as well as letters from Captain William Fitzwilliam Owen.

Records of the City of London Court, 1864-1935, including suits and proceedings in equity; suitors accounts books; duties of the office of registrar, roll of attorneys admitted to practice and committee orders.

Records relating to manors, 1539-1985, including the manors of East Burnham (Burnham Beeches); Finsbury Manor; Isleworth Manor and especially Southwark Manors (Kings Manor, Guildable Manor and Great Liberty Manor). Papers include deeds, surveys, court baron minute book, court leet minute books, verdicts and presentments of leet juries and proceedings of courts leet.

The court leet was a special court of record which the lords of certain manors were empowered by charter or prescription to hold. The Recorder held the Court Leet on behalf of the Corporation as lords of the manor. The legal jurisdiction of courts leet was abolished in 1977.

Records of the Middlesex County Council Civil Defence Department relating to activities during the Second World War, 1939-1945, including air raid log books, situation reports, damage logs and register of claims for compensation; correspondence on civil defence matters with the London Civil Defence Region, the Home Guard and other local and military authorities; civil defence demonstrations and exercises; bulletins and instructions; and schedules of requisitioned property.

Records of Clerkenwell Magistrates' Court, 1893-1987, including court registers; registers of adoption applications; probation order applications; means enquiries; court minutes recording charges and summons; court note books; probation orders; domestic proceedings including matrimonial cases and bastardy orders; registers of endorsements of driving licences; cash books; gaoler's index of defendants and clerk's papers.

Court registers record the date of the hearing, the name of the informant or complainant (often the police), the name of the defendant, a brief note of the offence and the decision of the magistrate. Court minute books or notebooks are rough notes of the proceedings recording the gist of the evidence given.

Domestic proceedings: A married woman under the provisions of the Summary Jurisdiction (Married Women) Act 1895 and subsequent Acts could go to a magistrates' court and apply for orders which in certain circumstances would enable her to separate from her husband, have custody of any children and receive maintenance from him. Under the Poor Law Amendment Act 1844 a mother expecting a bastard child or who had given birth to one could obtain a maintenance order against the putative father.

The collection is divided into four main groups: The first group contains papers relating to William Clift's work as conservator of the Hunterian Museum. This is the largest of the four groups and contains a number of sub divisions such as explanation and display of specimens, expanding the collections, administration of the museum, and correspondence. This group also contains the transcripts made by Clift and others of the Hunterian manuscripts. The second group contains work carried out by William Clift as an illustrator for publications. The third group contains a small amount of personal material that is in the collection. The fourth group contains transcripts and copies of manuscript material by William Clift that is held in other repositories such as the Natural History Museum.

Sheldrick, an action to recover damages for seizure of household goods and furniture under execution issued from Palace Court in action at suit of defendant v. William Charles Fisher, landlord of plaintiff; and letter from Gandar to attorney enquiring how the case is progressing and commenting on compensation to officers of the defunct Palace Court.

Papers of concentration camp inmates, 1942-1944, comprise copies of correspondence concerning concentration camps and the death of Jews and notably include a letter from the commandant of Gross Rosen concentration camp, Lower Silesia, to the Gestapo, Düsseldorf regarding the disposal of belongings of deceased Jew, Max Zobel, 1942; letter from Ernst Kaltenbrunner to all police chiefs stating that all executions are to be reported to the local justice department, with reasons for the executions withheld, 1942 and a letter from Stürmbahnführer, SD Latvia, suggesting a lack of concern about notifying the relatives of dead Jews, 1942.

Conduct record of John Warrow, a labourer born in Africa, convict no. 2039, from a court martial in Trinidad in 1834 to his transportation to Sydney in 1838, together with a physical description of the man. This colonial conduct record describes alleged offences against the disciplinary regime of penal settlements.

Records relating to the inquest on the victims of the wreck of the steamship "Princess Alice", 1878-1966. Records include inquisition giving names, ages, relationship and occupations of deceased; sworn statements of witnesses; verbatim report of inquest proceedings at Town Hall, Woolwich; indexes of witnesses; list of persons saved from the "Princess Alice"; correspondence; report of the Board of Trade investigation into the wreck of the "Princess Alice"; supporting documentation including maps of the area and navigation regulations.

The records in the CLRO are thought to be one of the finest and most complete municipal archives in Europe. However, researchers may notice some substantial gaps and these merit an explanation. The majority of the records of the Freedom of the City prior to 1681 and the City's Cash accounts prior to 1632 were either destroyed in the Great Fire in 1666 or in another fire in the Chamber (the finance department of the Corporation) in 1786. Similarly, it is thought that a fire at the Sessions House in the Old Bailey in 1877 destroyed the early Sessions minutes and files, as well as the bulk of the supporting papers. The paucity of surviving Sheriffs' Court records for the medieval period is thought to be because these records were considered to be the personal property of a Sheriff, who might be called upon to produce records in order to account for his actions during his time in office long after his Shrievalty had ended. Similarly, it is thought the records of coroner's inquests have not survived in any quantity before 1788 because inquests were not held in a court building until relatively recently, and so the records of inquests were considered part of the personal papers of office holders rather than administrative records.

Copy of a Court Roll containing a grant to John Emyford, clerk, of 5 pieces of arable land of the lord's demesne, formerly in the farm of Thomas Dowe and recently in the farm of Gregory Brandon, by the annual farm of 10d. for each acre annually. The roll also includes livery of seisin to John Emyford, clerk, at the same court. The annual rent is 4s.9d. The document is dated 'Thursday after 6 October, temp. Henry [IV?]', probably [1400-1425].

Copy of a Court Baron roll, containing a surrender by William Draper of all his messuages, lands, tenements, etc., to the uses of his will. Signed by Edmund Littler, deputy steward of the manor, and dated before 17 August 1719.
