Also included are a paper by Hands on 'A simplified curriculum based on occupations', 1925, and papers on experiments with English composition at St Mary's Boys' School, Weymouth and with the topical treatment of history and geography at S. Aldhelm's Girls' School, Branksome, c.1910.

Papers of George James Guthrie, 1841-1856, comprising a letter from Guthrie to William Clift, 15 Jun 1841, requesting a skeleton hung up in the theatre. Clift has noted at the end of the letter "This note came a week after the date"; and an obituary for Guthrie, from the Illustrated London News, 10 May 1856.

Working papers and correspondence of Sir John Henry Gaddum. The scientific material in the collection centres on a run of student and laboratory notebooks for 1922-1965, together with files of notes and calculations on biological assay and other topics. Further papers concentrate on Gaddum's teaching and publications in the form of lecture scripts, typescripts of articles and related correspondence. Material on his administrative work includes correspondence on conferences and organizations, with some Royal Society papers, but also Physiological Society letters, 1936-1941. Non-paper records such as slides and personal souvenirs are also preserved.

The collection consists mainly of minutes, financial records, manuscripts of unpublished texts and correspondence. It provides interesting detail on what one section of society thought would provide education for another. There is much useful information on the reading preferences of the public, and on the growth and development of Mechanics' Institutes. Most of those concerned with the founding of the Society as a project in self-education were also involved in the founding of the new University of London (now University College London) and some, like Augustus De Morgan and George Long, actually taught there. There is also considerable information on the work of publishers, illustrators, engravers and booksellers and on writers, whether already established authorities in their field or young hopefuls, like G H Lewes, who sought to establish themselves through the Society's patronage.

Collection of autograph letters, 1756-1849, brought together by Lord Odo Russell. The correspondents are mainly European scientists, including Nikolaus Joseph and his son Joseph Franz Freiherr von Jacquin, both Professor of Chemistry and Botany at Vienna University; the zoologist Leopold Joseph Franz Johann Fitzinger; and the botanist István Laszló Endlicher. The letters concern the natural sciences, the medical sciences, the physical sciences, the arts, theology, dealers, diplomats and statesmen, and others. There is also a note from Beethoven (post 1824) and a letter from Goethe (1807).

The content is mainly personal, for instance, to his wife Caroline, and sisters Catherine and Eliza; the letters also include some professional content, for instance, to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and to the editor of The Lancet.

Papers of Sir Everard Home, 1810-1822, comprising copies of letters written by Home to his son, James Everard Home, during the early part of the latter's career in the Royal Navy.

Papers of Dorothea (or Dorothy) Crompton, pupil at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, 1913-1924. The collection, consisting of concert programmes, advertising posters, professors' reports and correspondence, had been found at the School and had been used in an exhibition there. The exhibition, entitled "Who was Dorothea Crompton?", had been mounted to try to establish some details about Crompton as nothing was known about her. As far as can be gathered, no information about Dorothea Crompton was produced as a result of the exhibition.

Records of the Union Society of London, debating society. They comprise: regulations, 1877-1938 (Ms 22403-4); minutes, 1844-1947 (Ms 22405-6); report re treasurer's account, 1904 (Ms 22407); records concerning members, 1876-ca. 1959 (Ms 22408-10); accounts, 1862-1962 (Ms 22411-16); instructions regarding procedures, undated (Ms 22417); papers regarding the history of the Society, 1885-ca. 1924 (Ms 22418-19); and papers regarding debates, speeches and annual dinners, 1921-58 (Ms 22420-3). Although the Society appears to have ceased meeting formally in 1957 or 1958 (notices of debates last appear in the Law Journal for 1957), two of its members continued to pay subscriptions until 1961/2 (Ms 22413). Records catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in 1987.

Records of J Lyons and Company Limited, food manufacturers and caterers, 1891-1995. The archives reflect all aspects of the company's history. There are some of the usual company records relating to management, shareholding and administration, but the collection is particularly strong in what may be termed ephemera. There are hundreds of photographs, from 1887 up to the present day, a few films and videos, and large collections of press cuttings, advertisements, menus and even a set of lithographs which were commissioned by the company after the Second World War as a way of brightening up Lyons Corner Houses.

Records of Saint Katharine by the Tower Hospital, later known as the Royal College of Saint Katharine and the Royal Foundation of Saint Katharine. Records include charters and licences; rules and regulations; legal papers; minutes; correspondence and letter books; annual reports; financial accounts; registers of baptism, marriage and burial; banns books; Vestry minutes; papers regarding the manor of the hospital; papers regarding poor relief; papers of the Commissary Court of the Royal Peculiar including marriage allegations; papers regarding estates and properties including title deeds and surveys; maps and plans.

This catalogue also includes records deposited in the Library from the Valuation and Rates Department of the Corporation of the City of London in 1920. These volumes relate to rate assessments and poor law administration of the Precinct and probably reached the Corporation via the neighbouring parish of St Botolph Aldgate, to which the inhabitants of the Precinct would naturally have turned in 1825. Later Precinct books are catalogued within the archive of St Botolph Aldgate.

This collection consists of working papers, publications, and ephemera relating to the International Year of the Family (1994).

Records of J Lyons and Company Limited and Lyons Tetley Limited, food manufacturers and caterers, W H and F J Horniman and Company Limited and Joseph Tetley and Company, tea merchants, 1849-1978.

This collection contains records relating to all three companies (Horniman, Lyons and Tetley) when they were trading as separate businesses and when they were united under various incarnations of the one "Lyons" name. (They include references to other companies such as Symbol biscuits which Lyons took over in 1944)

However, despite the fact that some corporate records such as minutes have been retained by the Tetley Group Limited the majority of this collection is in fact composed of records relating to the Lyons company (which is necessarily linked with the former due to the fact it was a major competitor for years before taking it over in 1973).

Marketing and publicity aspects are the most heavily represented. As such this is a visually appealing collection and of particular note are the photograph albums and volumes of artwork, product labels and advertisments which are a testiment to the impact tea drinking has had on British society and its way of life.

Records of Whitbread and Company Ltd, brewers, with the papers of its subsidiary companies originally based in the London area, 1742-2000. These records will primarily be of interest to those concerned with the foundation and development of breweries or with the history of family businesses. A large collection of plans of properties, including public houses (LMA/4453/F/08), along with the Whitbread Archivist's research files (LMA/4453/G/05) will also be of interest to local historians researching specific public houses in the London area. Records relating to event 'Salkey's Score', commemorating the life of Andrew Salkey. Includes correspondence and minutes for the setting up of the committee. Biographical information on all participants. Drafts and proof copies for the programmes and letterhead. An original poster of Salkey's poem on the underground, A Song for England and copied pages from the comment book by attendees of the symposium.

Correspondence with Andrew Salkey, writer and broadcaster. Letters date from prior to Andrew Salkey leaving England to take up a professorship at Amherst College in North America. His continued involvement in the development of Bogle L'Ouverture was achieved through regular correspondence with Eric, Accabre and Jessica Huntley. He helped to create and maintain links to literary organisations and individuals in the States, the Caribbean and South America. The letters offer, advice, encouragement and information.

The series includes five dated and numbered files. Many of the letters are informal and friendly. Personal and current political issues of the day are commented on as are management, marketing and strategic planning for the development of Bogle-L'Ouverture.

The collection includes records of the Society for the Commemoration of the accession of Queen Elizabeth I comprising: minutes, 1683-1787; copy of annual address and rules, 1787; registers of subscribers to the annual dinners, 1766-8; and notes extracted from the minutes, 20th century.

Records of the parish of All Hallows the Less, Upper Thames Street, City of London, including parish registers (baptisms, marriages and burials) from 1558; Vestry minute books; Churchwardens' accounts; Overseers' book of receipts and payments; apportionment of tithe rent charges and poor rate assessment books. Some of these records are for joint meetings with the Vestry of All Hallows the Great.

Records of the parish of Saint Alphage, London Wall. The earliest records are churchwardens' accounts, which date from 1527. There are parish registers (baptisms, marriages, banns and burials) from 1613. Vestry minutes commence in 1569. Other records, including rate assessments and papers relating to tithes, date chiefly from the 18th century.

The main archive of the parish of St Anne and St Agnes dates from the 17th century, with parish registers (baptisms, burials, marriages, banns) from 1640, vestry minutes from 1679 and poor rate assessments from 1671. There are also records relating to parish charities and the parochial schools.

Records of the Middlesex County Council Fire Brigade Department Auxiliary Fire Service, 1948-1965, including policy and administration files relating to: civil defence, planning, repair depots, personnel management, staff regulations, conditions of service, minutes of meetings of officers, tactical studies, tactical instructors, competitions, recreational facilities, and liaison with other authorities.

Files relating to recruitment and training including: recruitment policy, recruitment publicity including films, courses at civil defence training schools, rescue training, training films, exercises, promotions, women's section, allowances and expenses, medical examinations and long service medals.

Files relating to appliances and equipment including housing of vehicles and appliances, motor cycles, Bedford self propelled pumps, equipment for water relaying, stores and provisions, extension ladders, and training pamphlets.

Copy of typescript memoir of his RN career, 1914-1918 and 1939-1943, covering his service with the Harwich force in the North Sea, 1914-1917, notably the Battle of Dogger Bank, Jan 1915, at Nore Command, 1918-1919, in the Atlantic convoys, 1939-1940, Norway, 1940, the evacuation of Dunkirk, 1940, as Staff Officer, HQ Western Approaches, 1940-1941, in the Mediterranean,1941-1942, Madagascar, 1942, Malta convoys, 1942, and the landings in North Africa, 1942, Sicily, 1943, and Italy, 1943.
