Records of the Gresham Club, a City of London dining club. The majority of the records presented to Guildhall Library on the liquidation of the Club in 1991/2 (catalogued as Mss 28834-28864) relate to the Club's time at Abchurch Lane. All Victorian records of the Club, excluding the deed of settlement of 1844 (Ms 28834) and a single notice of annual general meeting of 1845 (Ms 28837), appear not to have survived. The records include constitutional documents, minutes, accounts, records of membership, legal papers, photographs and miscellaneous administrative papers.

The Club's archives also include records of Gresham Club Trustees Ltd (Mss 28861-864), formed in 1915 to administer the lease of the premises at 15-17 Abchurch Lane. It was created to deal with all subsequent property transactions entered into by the Club, and enabled to borrow money, where appropriate, on the strength of the Club's property holdings. For a short history of the Club, written in 1943 for its centenary, see Ms 28856. The background papers used for this history have been catalogued as Ms 28857.

Most of the records are subject to a 30 year closure rule.

Records of the United Wards Club covering 1877-1996 and comprising: minutes, 1877-2004 (Ms 11722-4, 19293, 21481); registers of members, 1902-59 (Ms 19294); financial records, 1910-65 (Ms 19295-6, 20352); transactions, 1907-29 (Ms 21483); and miscellaneous papers, 1951-96 (Ms 21482, 30762, 36859). They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff between 1966 and 2006.

Minute book of the Aldersgate Club, a local residents' association.

Records of the Aldgate Ward Club, formerly the Aldgate Ward Association. They comprise: minutes, 1898-1983 (Ms 24541); annual reports, 1919-59 (Ms 24543); photographs, ca. 1920 (Ms 24541A); and miscellaneous items, 1923-83 (Ms 24542). They were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in 1991.

Income and expenditure accounts for the Vintry and Dowgate Wards Club.

Two letters from George Dance the younger; the first relating to preparations for the entertainment at Guildhall of the Prince Regent, the Emperor of Russia Alexander I and the King of Prussia Frederick William III, 1814; the second describing Dance's son as surviving the battle of Waterloo, 1815. With a sheet of verse in Dance's hand, 1810.

Records relating to the Oxford Street Pantheon, comprising counterparts of the shares/leases sold by owner Philip Elias Twist to fund the building, 1774-1788. The leases include a room by room schedule of fixtures, fittings and furnishings, and marginal plans.

Records of philanthropist John MacGregor relating to his charitable work, including letters; scrapbook of pamphlets, newspaper cuttings, hymn sheets, and posters, mainly relating to the Shoe Black Society, the Ragged Schools and general missionary work; album of press cuttings; album of obituary notices for MacGregor; printed ephemera for various charities and sports clubs, including pamphlets and articles by MacGregor.

Charter of the Horticultural Society of London.

This short series of scrapbooks cover the period 1887-1912 and contain invitations, cuttings and information on many of the social events that William Whitaker Thompson and his wife attended during his years in office.

Minutes of the London County Council Sports Club (known as the London County Council Staff Sports Club from March 1924), 1923-1930.

This collection contains material relating to Sir Michael Savory's years as Lord Mayor of the City of London, (1984-2005); Sheriff (1996-2003); Alderman (1893-2005) and Common Councillor (1992-1995). It also contains material relating to his work with the Britain-Austrailia Bicentennial Trust (1988-2005) and HSBC's "HSBC in the Community" programme (2000-2002). There is also some material relating to his personal life (1996-2005).

Records of particular interest are those relating to Michael Savory's mayoral year. There is a complete set of day files (CLA/081/A/03) documenting the events he attended; a large number of photographs (CLA/081/A/06) and files relating to his many visits, mostly overseas (CLA/A/04). The collection illustrates the preparation for the mayoral year and the planning involved in various activities and events (CLA/081/A/01). Press clippings (CLA/081/A/05) and the electronic records (CLA/081/A/07) illustrate the public side of the Lord Mayor.

The collection also includes aspects of Sir Michael's shrieval year and mainly contains a selection of day files (CLA/081B/02) illustrating events attended. Papers and correspondence relate to major events (CLA/B/01) like the presentation of the shrieval chain.

Records relating to officers of the Corporation of London, including City Marshal's ceremonial book, 1755-1800; forms of civic processions and posts allotted to City marshals and other officers in processions and other events, 1791 - 1798; instructions for the guidance of the Swordbearer, [1726-1742]; and abstract of duties of the City Officers, 1789.

Collection of documents relating to national events or institutions. The documents relate to varied subjects including Parliamentary elections and proceedings; taxation including tax assessments, tax agents and accounts; military commissions; the Tower of London; excise; military orders; passwords issued by royalty; bankruptcies; militia; licences; warrants; petitions; and patents.

Minute book of the London Salzburg Society, 1931-1935.

Year books of the West London Rifles (4th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps), giving details of parades, drills, and camps. Also copy of the will of Mrs Harriet Urquhart, wife of William Urquhart of 111 Riversdale Road, Highbury.

The records consist of issues of TOT magazines, 1930, and a souvenir programme of a rugby match between London Underground Railways and the Union Sportive du Metropolitain of Paris, 1930.

Records of James Raisin, Labour Party agent, consisting mainly of Organisers' reports on Labour party meetings and events in both the London District from 1946-1969 and the Northern Home Counties Region from 1958-1969.

Records relating to event 'Salkey's Score', commemorating the life of Andrew Salkey. Includes correspondence and minutes for the setting up of the committee. Biographical information on all participants. Drafts and proof copies for the programmes and letterhead. An original poster of Salkey's poem on the underground, A Song for England and copied pages from the comment book by attendees of the symposium.

Records of the Casual Club, 1866-2007, including minutes, papers and correspondence concerning administrative issues, membership cards, members' directories, attendance books, subscription books, papers and correspondence concerning members, lecture material, photographs of members, account books, papers and correspondence relating to accounts, printed histories of the club, meetings' programmes and an engraved gavel.

Records of the Samuel Pepys Club, including Administration records (1895-20--), including meeting minutes and agendas, unpublished papers, correspondence, and records relating to club events; Membership records (1903-2003), including lists of members and club rules; Finance records (1910-1991), including annual accounts; Historical notes (19--) including notes on Samuel Pepys and the formation of the club; Photographs (1950-1983) relating to club outings.

Specification of Works to be contracted for in Building the Conservative Club House in St. James Street, May 1843, formed of 20 large parchment membranes taped together.

The Specification commences with 74 articles dealing with the structure, the site, and general conditions for the performance of the work; these fill rather more than five membranes. The rest of the Specification is headed "Description of inside Work and Finishings" and deals with the interior of the intended building, room by room, and staircases, passages, etc. There are ten small marginal drawings of mouldings, fitments, etc.

The place of Lord Boston and Viscount Castlereagh and W. Ormsby Gore, as Conservative peers and Conservative M.P. respectively, is obvious. The function of John Minet Fector in this transaction is as yet unascertained; he was a collateral descendant of the well-known Minet family. The two Bakers doubtless represent the firm of George Baker and Son, builders, of Palace New Road, Lambeth.

Scrap book compiled by Lord Henry Horne, covering the period 1915-1929, reflecting his work at official functions and social life following World War One, including letters, press cuttings, photographs and other mementos including letter in French from Maj Gen John Emerson Wharton Hedlam, Jul 1924; letter from Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig to Florence Matthews congratulating her on her work with the 'Soldiers and Sailors Free Buffet' at Victoria Station, Jul 1920; letter to Horne from Randall Davidson, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1927 and from his wife Edith Davidson, 1928. Papers of Club 1943, [1970s-1980s], comprise a 40th anniversary report of Club 1943 including a list of all the lectures given, arranged alphabetically by name of speaker, 1983; printed leaflet detailing the activities and membership of the club, [1970s-1980s], and a handwritten and typescript history of the club by J Lesser, [1970s-1980s].

Papers of Barry Eric Odell Pain, 1907, comprise a letter to Mr Marshall, reluctantly accepting a dinner engagement in Walsall. 'To be perfectly candid, I hate public dinners and am dead sick of being guest-of-the-eveninged'.

Records of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners. The archives date from 1605, however, the early membership records are patchy, and the court minutes do not begin until the second half of the 18th century. The archive is not large, but it is notable for a series of scrapbooks recording the history of the company since 1345, begun by the company in 1934 and continuing to the present day.
