There is an index, added by Sir David William Smith, 1st Baronet, in 1828.

Manuscript volume containing a record of housekeeping expenses, 1766-1848. The account book contains annual expenses from 1766-1768, weekly expenses from Jan 1769-Aug 1787, mostly for food and washing clothes, and weekly household expenses from Aug 1837 to Nov 1847 with details of servants' wages from Nov 1837 to Nov 1848. The expenses for Aug 1837 are headed '10 Avenue Road, Regent's Park'. Includes a list headed 'Books in Library in Margaret's Room', dated 7 Sep 1837; the works are mainly religious. Some pages have been used for notes and jottings.

Manuscript volume lettered 'Memoire de Finance' containing two works written in the same hand, probably mid 17th century, and attributed by an inscription on the fly-leaf to Charles de Marillac, Archbishop of Vienne (c 1510-1560) and his nephew, Michel de Marillac (1563-1632). The first section of the volume comprises three Gallican tracts, namely 'De patrimonio ecclesie', in Latin and French (latest date mentioned is 1646), arguing that secular patronage was the source of ecclesiastical wealth; 'Cura et authoritas in his quae pertinent ad fidem', defending control of the church by the Chritian prince, with much reference to the early church; and 'La Jurisdiction en generale est un pouvoir et autorite publique', arguing that independent ecclesiastical jurisdiction was confined to spiritual matters, citing papal and royal legislation up to 1639.
The second part of the manuscript contains a treatise entitled 'Du Conseil du Roy', in French and dated to [1611], being a discussion of the personnel, functions and rules of the King's Council (begins on folio 110 + 2, latest date 1629).
The attribution to the Marillacs is made in a later hand than that of the main text.

Petition, [1720?], to the justices of the peace for the West Riding of Yorkshire on behalf of Abraham Bean, a farmer of the parish of Cantley, near Doncaster, and signed by John Fox, Vicar of Cantley, Samuel Crabtree, William Morehouse and John Leetham, parishioners. The petition 'Sheweth That your Petitioner is an honest and labourious Person And hath maintain'd himself and family (since he had one) reputably on a Small Farm in This Parish...', and appeals for further aid - the Justices had granted £10 immediate relief the previous August at Rotherham. He had lost 16 head of 'Great Cattle' in the winter, and his house had been burned down. Both he and his wife had suffered from burns, and they and their two children had been forced to enter an alms house 'and are there now barely kept from starving by the Parish'. A note is added at the foot: '29 1. as Charity to be paid by the Treasurer'.

Tables headed 'An Account of the revenues of the British Empire collected in the year 1800, distinguishing the gross and net produce, charges of management etc., and payments into the Exchequer of each respective branch Together with a general view of the revenues from the first stage of collection, with the various deductions therefrom, until the several sums were paid into the Exchequer', organised under the main headings of Customs; Excise; Stamps; Taxes; Post Office; Hackney coaches; 'Hawkers & Pedlers'; and 'General View'.

Papers of Alfred Pavel Peres, 1939-1948, including minutes of discussions held initially between President Dr Edward Benes and Dr Peres and later also including Dr G Beuer, Dr J Zimmer, Dr Popper, and Dr Girschick, signed by Peres. The subjects of the discussions are wide ranging and necessarily reflect the changing situation vis a vis the effects of war. They include problems regarding the Sudetendeutsch, the formation of a Czech government in exile (-/2); problems of Czech refugees (-/3); report regarding Czech soldiers in France. The papers also include correspondence between Peres and Benes, Jan Masaryk and others. These papers document, in part, the activities of Czech exiles in London during the war and the situation in Czechoslovakia in the immediate post war years.

Also include papers relating to Oakeshott collected or created by Shirley Letwin and others, including research papers for Shirley Letwin's proposed biography of Oakeshott.

Papers of Sir Isaac James Pitman, [1940-1972], mainly relating to his political career, notably the nationalisation of the Bank of England and the gas industry, and his work for the World Security Authority. The collection also contains printed material relating to Boots and Glaxo.

Letters by Thornely to his fellow MP for Wolverhampton, Charles Pelham Villiers (1802-1898) including some letters by Villiers, bound typescript transcript. Also includes a letter from Thornely to his father announcing his election, 10 Jan 1835, a brief biography of Thornely, and photographs of both Villiers and Thornely.

Papers of Derek Senior, [1940-1988], including material relating to the Royal Commission on Local Government in England, 1966-1969, notably briefing papers, evidence, minutes of meetings, printed materials, working papers, press cuttings, research studies, correspondence and drafts of the final report; cuttings, articles and reports on urban form, structure, land use and town planning; reports, articles and pamphlets on numerous subjects, including rural conservation, local government reorganisation, education, housing, and transport; typescripts of several books by Senior.

Unfortunately, no papers survive to document Lord Shinwell's early trade union and Labour Party career and relatively few survive from his period in office in the 1945 Labour government.

Papers relating to local government deposited by Professor Kenneth Young, 1945-1985, comprising: Memoranda of evidence sent to the 1986 Committee of Inquiry into the Conduct of Local Authority Business (Widdicombe Committee), 1985. Kenneth Young acted as research director and adviser to the Committee (6 boxes). Also includes papers relating to the 1947 Local Government Boundary Commission, 1945-1954, including minutes of meetings, memoranda, statements submitted to the Commision, correspondence, statements of reasons and public relations bulletins. The papers were given to Kenneth Young by 2nd Baron Silsoe, son of the chairman of the Commission, Malcolm Trustram Eve (1 box).
