Copy letter from the Matron of Friern Hospital, Mrs A M Blythe, 1941, describing the reception of mothers and babies from the City of London Maternity Hospital after that hospital was severely damaged by bombing, and the treatment and experiences of air raid casualties.

Records of Joshua Alexander, solicitor and property developer, recording the drawing up of building agreements and the granting of leases of the resulting houses. None of the agreements or leases survive but the pattern of development can be traced through the accounts of advances for building and the ground rents received for leases.

Building agreements and lease books: These books record cash advances made by Joshua Alexander and his business partner William Bradshaw under building agreements for the development of their various estates. When leases were granted of newly erected houses, ground rents received under them were likewise recorded. Apart from including names of lessees and addresses of property leased, the books are heavily annotated with references to court proceedings, assignments of interests and other actions necessary for administrating estates. Each book is indexed under names of tenants.

Rentals: These record the payment of ground rents by lessee of houses on the various estates described above. Each rental is arranged by estate and contains name and address of lessee or assignee, address of property rented, amount of ground rent due and summaries of totals..

Letter books: family and personal letters. Copies of letters from Lionel Alexander of personal and family nature, many concerning involvement with Jewish institutions, charities and general affairs, also copies of letters to press and articles.

Records of the Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief, predecessor organisations and associated organisations. The archive details the work of the Fund in shelters, hostels, internment camps, schools and foster homes.

Correspondence of Chief Rabbi Nathan Adler, 1868-1901. A small number of records survive from around 1868 for the Chief Rabbinate of Nathan Adler and more from the late 1870s onwards - around the time Hermann Adler began to undertake many of his father's duties for him. Records of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, 1760-2002. The archive is central to the history of the modern Jewish community in Britain. It covers virtually every facet of Jewish life in Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - assimiliation, education, political emancipation, Shechita, anti-Semitism. The archive is particularly interesting on the conditions of Jewry outside the UK - there is a lot of information, for example, on the rise of fascism in mainland Europe in the 1930s and the Holocaust.

Records of Samuel Fisher, local government officer. The collection reflects the range of his interests and involvement in public life. There are a large number of photographs and press cuttings as well as some family papers. The photographs show Fisher's activities as Mayor and as Chairman of the London Labour Mayors Association, and include pictures of visits to Geneva, Australia, Gibraltar, New York, Israel and Belfast.

Records relating to the Liberal Jewish Synagogue and the Jewish Religious Union, consisting of the working papers and sermons of Israel Mattuck, Lily Montagu, Claude Montefiore and Leslie Edgar. The records do not deal exclusively with their roles within the Liberal Jewish movement, but cover a range of their activities. Some more personal correspondence also exists within the collection. There are also some papers of the Jewish Religious Union, including history and press cuttings.

Records of the London Society for Jews and Christians, including minute books; correspondence; financial accounts; reports; bulletins; press cuttings; papers for publication; copies of talks; and programmes and advertisements for meetings and conferences.

Records of the United Synagogue's Head Office, including minutes, agendas, presented papers, printed annual reports and accounts, byelaws and standing orders, papers relating to property, letter books and correspondence, financial accounts, insurance papers, membership papers, records relating to staff, administrative records, photographs, press cuttings, orders of service, Aubrey Newman's files, and papers relating to Soviet Jewry. This material has been catalogued in 20 sub-fonds (ACC/2712/01 to ACC/2712/20).

Also included in this collection are records of the individual member synagogues; these comprise mainly membership records, but there are also administrative and financial records for some synagogues. Records of bodies connected with the United Synagogue to a greater or lesser extent are also included in this collection, such as the Office of the Chief Rabbi, London Beth Din and Beth Hamedrash, the Kashrut Commission and various Jewish friendly societies and charities. Four lecture notebooks of Hedwig (Hedy) Lehmann when she was a medical student, covering the period 1942-1945. These items shed light on the curriculum and teaching methods in nursing training in England during the Second World War period. With additional original and copy documents relating to H Lehmann and her nursing career, and transcript of an interview H Lehmann gave to historians Sybille Baumbach and Beate Meyer in London May 1991 investigating the history of the Jewish community in Hamburg during the years up to and including the Second World War.

The papers are very extensive though there are some lacunae, probably attributable to Chain's many changes of workplace. The early biographical period is sparsely documented, there are sporadic gaps in the correspondence files, and there is no original documentation of the penicillin research at Oxford (although there are many historical accounts and much correspondence about the history of penicillin). The surviving biographical material provides documentation of the arrangements for Chain to live and work in Britain, later honours and awards and his musical interests, and family correspondence, photographs and press-cuttings. There are very substantial records of his later career at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and Imperial College, London, including his continuing contributions to biochemical problems such as carbohydrate metabolism, ergot alkaloids, edible proteins and aeration studies. The Imperial College material also contains records of the creation, administration, finance and architectural design of the Biochemistry Department, and developments in the Department after Chain's statutory retirement in 1973. Additional information about Chain's research is available in the documentation of his very extensive consultancy agreements and collaborative work with industrial firms such as Astra, Beechams and Rank Hovis McDougall, and records relating to government, grant-giving and charitable bodies such as the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research Campaign and Medical Research Council which contributed to the funding of his research. There is much material on Chain's lectures, addresses and broadcasts, and on his extensive travel on visits and conferences, which includes a substantial number of unpublished talks.

An exceptional feature of the Chain papers is the documentation of the large number of Israel and Jewish organisations with which he was associated, especially the Weizmann Institute of Science, where he was a governor for many years and had at one time considered taking up an appointment.

Papers of concentration camp inmates, 1942-1944, comprise copies of correspondence concerning concentration camps and the death of Jews and notably include a letter from the commandant of Gross Rosen concentration camp, Lower Silesia, to the Gestapo, Düsseldorf regarding the disposal of belongings of deceased Jew, Max Zobel, 1942; letter from Ernst Kaltenbrunner to all police chiefs stating that all executions are to be reported to the local justice department, with reasons for the executions withheld, 1942 and a letter from Stürmbahnführer, SD Latvia, suggesting a lack of concern about notifying the relatives of dead Jews, 1942.

Papers of Malwin Warschauer, 1899-1988, including unpublished copy typescript account of the life and philosophy of Malwin Warschauer entitled Tradition, by his son, James J. Walters; copies of sermons; philosophical treatises; lectures; newspaper articles; correspondence with Albert Einstein and Leo Baeck and obituaries.

Personal correspondence of Anita Lasker-Wallfisch with family members, documenting in part the experiences of Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and her sisters in Bergen Belsen concentration camp and in England, 1945, and the experiences of their parents prior to transportation to their deaths, close to the Lublin Ghetto, 1942.

Papers of Edgar Dreyfus and his family, 1939-1948, 1981-1989, notably include passports, identity and ration cards and a false identity card and false ration card for Edgar Dreyfus in the name of Edouard Delmas and correspondence and other papers including a discussion on the existence of a Jewish race.

Heilbrunner's account of life in Dachau, 1933, is a typescript memoir of Jewish inmate, Heilbrunner, in 1933. Written in the form of a narrative in the first person; structured into four chapters, describes in some detail the conditions in the camp and the brutality of the camp guards, contains manuscript annotations and corrections.

Papers of the Morris family, 1901-1905, comprise letters between Frieda Morris' grandmother and father in Poland and her brother and uncle in London. The collection includes translations.

Papers of the Hirsch Family, 1934-1957, comprise personal and family papers of Jonni Hirsch including the copies of Abraham Hirsch's 19th century war record, c 1935; permit to leave the concentration camp Sachsenhausen and a certificate issued by the chief of police, Kiel, which describes Jonni Hirsch as a Mischling I Grade, therefore not classified as Jewish, according to German law 1, 1938.

Papers concerning antisemitic discrimination in the Third Reich, 1935-1940, relating to the workplace discrimination against Jews during this period and notably comprise copies of correspondence including a notification to Willy Kroener, a dentist, that he must have a plaque outside his house stating that treatment is restricted to Jews only, 20 Feb 1939; correspondence to Magdalena Meyerstein, Leipzig, from the Reichstheaterkammer that she can no longer be a member of that organisation, 9 Apr 1937-6 Sep 1940 and a pro-forma letter from the Reichsnährstand, Kleve, Rheinland, regarding the treatment of those who have dealings with Jewish traders, [1930s].

War crimes trials: trial papers including detailed indictments and verdicts of various post-World War Two war crimes trials; reports on trials by observers; copy statements and other papers, 1947-1967.

Original (and some copy) correspondence between friends and relatives of the Cahn Hepner family, 1874-1952, many of whom perished in the Holocaust.

Papers relating to Joachim Prinz, 1936-1937, including text of a speech by former members of Joachim Prinz's congregation, prior to Prinz's departure to the US, [1937]; newspaper cuttings including an article entitled 'Unsere jüdische Kultursituation' by Prinz from the Israelitisches Familienblatt, 7 Oct 1936 and an article written in honour of Prinz shortly prior to his departure to the US, 11 Jun 1937.

Typescript report on the fate of Rabbi Dr F Steckelmacher and his wife during the Nazi era.

Papers relating to the International Conference for Jewish Social Work, Jul 1936, including reports on the state of Jewish social work in Europe and USA; letter from M J Karpf to Professor D Cohen of the Jewish Central Information Office expressing concern that the delegation to the Third International Conference from Germany was planning to use the conference for propaganda purposes and printed handbook entitled Social Work and the Community, studies in preparation for the International Conference on Social Work.

Copy papers regarding the trial of Gertrud Wilmersdörfer and others for intent to commit a treacherous act, namely the publication and distribution of communist material, including indictment, verdict and newspaper report relating to the trial; copy article and correspondence containing biographical material on Alexandre Morgune, a former French Resistance colleague of Gertrud Wilmersdörfer, who received the French honour Citation à l'Ordre de la Division; copy article regarding Ravensbrück concentration camp by Nedjalka Tschernaeva.

Typescript, annotated, incomplete, account of Nelly Wolffheim's experience running the last remaining Jewish Kindergarten school in Berlin, 1934-1939.

Papers of the Neumann family, 1909-1971, including personal papers of Karl Neumann comprising school certificates, marriage certificate, job references and family correspondence and the personal papers of Irma Neumann (née Traub) including birth certificates and school certificates.

Copy of an eyewitness report by Hedwig Forester of his arrest by the Nazis in Brussels, May 1940, transportation in cattle wagons, and arrival in Gurs concentration camp, France, 2 weeks later.

Goldschmied family papers, 1938-1971, document the fate of a Jewish mixed race family in Vienna during the Nazi era and notably include passport ID cards and correspondence, personal accounts by Maria Goldschmied and photographs.

Account of Paul Loebl's experiences during the Nazi era. It is described as 'a translation of a report to the Director of the VAD'. The original is thought to have been in German. It is not known what the VAD is.

Papers of the Ullstein family, 1856-1998, comprising papers from a number of separate deposits from members of Frederick Ullstein's family. It contains both personal and family papers arranged by individual family members (1361/1-9) and material relating to the pre and post war Ullstein publishing business (1361/10-28). The latter contains correspondence regarding the take over of Ullstein by the Axel Springer Verlag (1361/17; 1361/22-23). In addition there is a quantity of material which Frederick Ullstein appears to have inherited from his former employer, Wolfgang Foges, managing director of Aldus Books (1361/29-85).

Antisemitic notices comprise two small paper notices stamped with the Anti-semitic slogan Kauft nicht bei Juden(Don't buy from Jews), [1933-1939].

Papers of Alice Stern, 1940, comprise a Jewish Identification Card of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia 'Allgemeine Bürgerliche Legitimation', issued 4 Nov 1940, it has a red 'J' stamp in it, the date of the evacuation 31 October 1941 and the marriage notice with Mr Eckstein, dated 5 May 1942.
