Photographs, accompanied by notes and correspondence of manuscripts, collected by Cyril Ernest Wright c1933-1972. The first section of the collection contains papers, plates, photocopies, photographs, translations and notebooks containing notes of certain Middle English manuscripts held in The British Library, Oxford Bodleian Library, Durham Cathedral and Cambridge University Library. There are also some items of correspondence concerning Middle English Manuscripts (1948-1977). The second section contains photographs taken from Italian Renaissance manuscripts, notebooks of notes concerning manuscripts in various Dutch, Italian and English libraries and museums. Section 3 contains photographs of manuscripts, plates and proofs for Fontes Harleiani: a Study of the Sources of the Harleian Collection of Manuscripts in the British Museum. In the final section of the collection is a list of Harley Manuscripts in the Department of Manuscripts at the British Library.

Papers of Daniel Whistler, including commonplace books of prescriptions, diagnoses, exercises in metaphysics and logic, philology, definitions of terms, notes on heraldry and extracts from Aristotle and Hippocrates (in Greek) and from Mercurialis, Fernelius, Sennentus, and others (in Latin); extracts from Tacitus, Caesar, Suetonius, Plutarch, Strabo, Pliny, Quintilian, Aeschylus and Valerius Maximus, in the hand of Whistler; In Aristotelis lib.3 Physicorum Commentarius Analyticus in the hand of Whistler; cash book, pharmacopoeia and medical aphorisms.

The letterbook is entitled 'Autographs chiefly of my Literary Friends'. As this indicates, the letters were mostly retained for the signatures and many letters have had the text removed, leaving only the signature and perhaps the address. Other letters are incomplete, usually retaining just the last sheet. Most of the letters are written to Weymouth himself, but some are in the form of testimonials for him.

Papers and correspondence, 1846-1974, of David Meredith Seares Watson and his family, largely comprising biographical material and family papers, scientific correspondence, and photographs, also including a few Exchequer receipts, 1568-1622.

Four Exchequer receipts dated 1568, 1580, 1616 and 1622 were found enclosed with a letter to Watson's wife.

Scientific correspondence of Watson, sometimes including photographs of fossil specimens, with leading palaeontologists in Africa, 1947-1953, America, 1915-1964, Australia, 1931-1962, China, 1926-1927, 1935-1964, England, 1913-1914, 1920, 1926-1960, France, 1930-1936, 1945-1956, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, 1920-1962, Russia, 1920-1962, and Scandinavia, 1922-1964, and with the palaeontologist Robert Broom, 1911-1950, and Watson's research assistant Joyce Townshend, 1929-1973, also including a few letters from Watson's wife and scientific colleagues, and an obituary of Watson, 1974; correspondence and papers on bones found at Qau, Egypt, 1930-1957, 1972; miscellaneous other palaeontological correspondence, 1912-1967. Papers of John Kenworthy Walker, 1809-1849, comprising a manuscript volume containing notes of lectures made whilst studying for his MB at Edinburgh University, where James Gregory was Professor of Medicine. Topics include phlogosis; supporatio, pus, gangrena and phlegmon; opthalmia; phrenitis and cyanche tonsillarus; cyanche maligna, 1809; innoculatio variola, vaccine innoculation, ruboela, uiticana, pemphigus, aptha, and haemorrhagia; and a formula for cholera medicines by J Macaulay of Leeds, 1849.

Personal papers of François Verdeil, including correspondence and Clinical Case books, 1787-1820. In addition to the case books, the correspondence mainly relate to his treatment of patients, with some letters relating to the treatment of his wife. There are also some administrative papers concerning the establishment of a Collège de Médecine at Lausanne.

Manuscripts relating to the City of London, mainly comprising extracts and transcripts from medieval records, including patent and close rolls, chronicles, subsidies, and so on. For an inventory of the manuscripts see CLC/511/MS01721.

George Charles Moore Smith's undated transcripts, first lines and titles of 17th-century poems before 1660. The sources include British Library Additional MSS, MSS Sloane, Lansdowne, Dyce, Harleian and Egerton; Oxford University, Bodleian Library, MS Ashmole, MS Malone, MS Rawlinson Poet; Corpus Christi Library, Oxford, MS 32B; Cambridge University Library, Add MS 4138; manuscripts at St John's, Emmanuel, Jesus and Corpus Christi Colleges, Cambridge; commonplace books including those by Anthony Scattergood and W E Preston; poets including Anthony Sleep, Thomas Coriat, Peter Hausted (Halstead), Edward Forset, John Eliot, Henry Molle and Thomas Masters. Much of the material is written on the reverse of examination scripts in English (some identified as University of Sheffield).

This collection comprises a variety of unrelated items listed under the fonds 'Small Collections' for convenience. The items include: research notes, transcripts, treatises, reports, surveys, drawings, annals, chronicles, calendars, translations, newspaper cuttings, sermons, scrapbooks, books of hours and gospels, warrants, bills, accounts, sales catalogues, recipes, ships' manifests and lists. Most of the items relate to the history of the City of London or greater London, with subjects including hospitals, shops, churches, street layout, legal matters, government and Mayors, livery companies, markets, the residents of the city, inns and taverns, armorial bearings, law and order, parks, armed forces and war, taxation, monarchs, fires, the river Thames, food, medicine, topography and monumental inscriptions.

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence: the Singers were clearly vigorous letter writers and both Charles and Dorothea had an enormous number of family, friends and acquaintances. Unfortunately many of their letters were hand written and very few carbon copies survive. Very occasionally an attempt at methodical selection and arrangement is evident: on the whole correspondence had been kept in alphabetical order, and this has been retained in the arrangement of the collection. Dorothea and Charles' correspondence was fairly mixed (reflecting their working life together) with the exception of two distinct groups: correspondence about Dorothea's research on alchemical manuscripts, and later correspondence about her hearing aids.

The main part of the collection centres on the correspondence; this has been grouped together in a self-evident sequence: writings and biographical personal papers follow. Certain of Dorothea's papers remained clearly distinct and these have been kept together. Section E contains a variety of material relating to Jewish refugees, which had been placed on one side by Dorothea after the war for permanent preservation. It has not been listed in detail but sorted into three broad categories. The last section, comprising additional correspondence of the Singers with Sir Zachary Cope, Sir Arthur Salusbury MacNalty and Dr F N L Poynter, is not strictly part of the collection, but these groups of correspondence were given to the Institute to be placed alongside the Singer papers.

The item comprises a wooden block on which is mounted Sir James Young Simpson's signature, apparently torn from a document. Only the first part of the date, "31st Dec", survives.

Sherbourne Collection papers, early 19th century, comprising a volume containing a manuscript by William Clift on his transcription of John Hunter's manuscripts, watermarked 1821; a manuscript epitaph for John Hunter, by his widow Anne Home Hunter, after 1804-1805; a manuscript by William Clift giving an account of his apprenticeship with John Hunter; a autobiographical manuscript by William Clift, 30 Mar 1840; and a manuscript by Sir Richard Owen titled Biography of William Clift.

The collection contains correspondence, diaries, travel journals, accounts, library catalogues and commonplace books of the Kenrick, Reid, Rogers and Sharpe families, which all help to complete the picture of the four related families. The correspondence covers many topics and is especially interesting on three counts: first, for the many letters from eminent men and women; second, for the range and depth of discussion and exchange of ideas on literary, artistic, religious and philosophical matters; and third, for the day-to-day letters written between parent and child over several generations, which provide a detailed account of family life during the period.

Collection of autograph letters, 1756-1849, brought together by Lord Odo Russell. The correspondents are mainly European scientists, including Nikolaus Joseph and his son Joseph Franz Freiherr von Jacquin, both Professor of Chemistry and Botany at Vienna University; the zoologist Leopold Joseph Franz Johann Fitzinger; and the botanist István Laszló Endlicher. The letters concern the natural sciences, the medical sciences, the physical sciences, the arts, theology, dealers, diplomats and statesmen, and others. Handwritten messages within the book, are all dated between 1905-1907 and vary in style but include messages of goodwill from friends, notably one enclosing a dried plant stem intended as a charm; poems; sketches and quotations from famous poets.

Five fragments of Latin mediaeval manuscripts, formerly pastedowns, details as follows:

1. Fragment of a leaf containing part of a legal tract entitled Judicium Essoniorum relating to the procedure at assizes, dating from the 13th century. The text has variants and is in places abbreviated from that printed in G.E. Woodbine Four thirteenth century law tracts (New Haven, 1910). The text corresponds to the pp 119-20 of Woodbine's edition, where the composition of the work is attributed to Ralf de Hengham and the date of the composition put at 1267-1275.
2. and 3. Two consecutive leaves containing extracts from Part II of Gratian's Decretum, comprising Causa XXVI, quest. VII 16, to Causa XXVII, quest. I 19, on penance and the marriage of those who had sworn chastity. There is a glossary in a different hand and ink, with each section preceded by a symbol corresponding to one in the text. The leaves are possibly Italian and 14th century.
3. Leaf, foliated 109, in a late 14th century hand, containing part of Lib. XLII, 8, 1-10, of the Digestum Novum, relating to restitution to deceived creditors. With a glossary and marginal and interlineal annotations in several 13th-14th century hands. The fragment is probably English.
4. Fragment from the head of a bifolium, containing part of a commentary on Aristotle's De Anima Book III, heavily glossed and annotated in several 13th century hands. The fragment is probably English and early 13th century.

Medieval manuscript fragments formerly used as pastedowns, as follows:

1. Fragment of a leaf containing part of an abridgement of Seneca's De Beneficiis. Contains a complete paragraph beginning 'Iam vero transeamus' and ending 'deinde benficium' (corresponding to Book II, 18-19, p.36, line 26, to p.39, line 12 of the Teubner 1900 edition). The manuscript was written in the mid-12th century, and there are corrections and additional punctuation in a 12th-13th century hand.
2. Fragment of a leaf containing part of St Jerome's Epistola ad Paulum, headed LIII (53), from halfway through paragraph 7 'mundum ad poenitentiam' to the end, and the first few words of the Prologue to the Pentateuch (ending 'Latratibus patens'). The manuscript was probably written in France during the second half of the 13th century.
3. Fragment of a leaf containing Book III, 6 and 7, of the Clementinae, on testaments and burials. With gloss and annotations in a 14th century hand. The manuscript was probably written in Germany in the 14th century, and is also inscribed in a 16th century hand 'Francoise de Pont femme a Monsieur Jehan George Pipon faict avec Madame Monet Perrot sa femme'.
4. Fragment of a leaf containing part of the sanctorale from a Missal of Roman use, from the epistle of the Assumption of the Virgin (15 Aug) to the introit for the feast of St Agapitus (18 Aug), only the mass for St Laurence (17 Aug) being complete. The manuscript was probably written in Italy during the 14th century.
