Extract from records of proceedings before the Commissioners 'for hearing and determining appeals against the duties on male servants' at the Golden Lion Inn at Cheriton Bishop, Devon, on 3 Feb 1807, giving reasons for allowing an appeal against a surcharge on a domestic servant made by the Rev. Bryan Roberts, Rector of Drewsteignton. The appeal had been challenged by James Searle, surveyor, and the commissioners were Richard Holland, John Cann and Baldwin Huldford. The return made by Roberts in 1806 had included 1 four wheel carriage, 2 riding horses, 2 labour horses, 4 sporting dogs, 1 male servant, and 'one other occasionally employed in his garden'.

Collection of autograph letters, 1756-1849, brought together by Lord Odo Russell. The correspondents are mainly European scientists, including Nikolaus Joseph and his son Joseph Franz Freiherr von Jacquin, both Professor of Chemistry and Botany at Vienna University; the zoologist Leopold Joseph Franz Johann Fitzinger; and the botanist István Laszló Endlicher. The letters concern the natural sciences, the medical sciences, the physical sciences, the arts, theology, dealers, diplomats and statesmen, and others. There is also a note from Beethoven (post 1824) and a letter from Goethe (1807).

Twenty-three manuscript notebooks on mathematical statistics which include 'The theory of deviation from an average', the introduction to 'An algebra of evolution', and 'Problems relating to the mathematical treatment of statistics: periodicity and deviation'.

Four Exchequer receipts dated 1568, 1580, 1616 and 1622 were found enclosed with a letter to Watson's wife.

The collection consists mainly of minutes, financial records, manuscripts of unpublished texts and correspondence. It provides interesting detail on what one section of society thought would provide education for another. There is much useful information on the reading preferences of the public, and on the growth and development of Mechanics' Institutes. Most of those concerned with the founding of the Society as a project in self-education were also involved in the founding of the new University of London (now University College London) and some, like Augustus De Morgan and George Long, actually taught there. There is also considerable information on the work of publishers, illustrators, engravers and booksellers and on writers, whether already established authorities in their field or young hopefuls, like G H Lewes, who sought to establish themselves through the Society's patronage.

The Brain archive comprises his personal and professional papers together with sampled case notes from his private practice, 1865-1977. As well as medical papers, there is a significant amount of material relating to Brain's philosophical and literary interests, and some papers of Brain's family and of his wife Stella (nee Langdon-Down).

Includes notes and correspondence relating to the illnesses of Prince George (later George V) and the Duke of Clarence, 1891-1892; Papers relating to a study tour of Parisian hospitals, 1905; Letters sent to Broadbent from various correspondents, such as Prince Albert Edward (later Edward VII), Joseph Lister, and the Duke of Connaught, 1886-1902; Newspaper cuttings relating to Broadbent, 1899-1905; and a bound volume of obituaries, 1907.

Sir William Browne's papers relating to his personal and professional life, particularly his role within the Royal College of Physicians, 1708-[1774]. Includes his commonplace book, containing notes, letters and poems, in Latin, English, Greek and French, in Browne's hand, 1708-c.1774; Papers relating to the College collected by Browne, in two volumes, the first regarding the benefactions of the College, especially the eponymous lectures, c.1710-52, and the second, regarding the College's finances, such as accounts of rent charges, land taxes, and annuities, c.1751-54.
