Biographical history

Prausnitz studied in England 1905-1908 (his mother was English), and in 1933 emigrated to England from Germany, where he had been Professor of Hygiene and Bacteriology at Breslau. He became a general practitioner at Ventnor, Isle of Wight. In 1939 he became a British citizen and added his mother's maiden name to his own. In 1977 Dr Christopher Giles of Stoke-on-Trent presented a collection of his father's books and papers to the Wellcome Institute Library. This collection was transferred to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre in 1980 and found to consist mainly of printed books and reprints, which were therefore transferred to the relevant sections of the Library, leaving a small amount of 'archival' material.
