Records of the College Archives primarily covering the period of office of the first Archivist, Claire Daunton, who established the Archives and created the cataloguing system. Records include material relating to accessions and deposits (1987-1988), cataloguing, records management and departmental policy (1989-1997). They include correspondence with the Vice-President's office (1993-1996) and regarding the indexing of Committee minutes (1990). Also includes papers of Dr Ornella Moscucci's unpublished history of the College (1989) and the College Archives Subject Guides (1999).

The papers of Kathleen and Millicent Coleman comprise three classes of material: the private papers of the sisters and the Coleman family, 1842-1957; records relating to the National Children's Home, 1935-1981; and the Pestalozzi Village Trust, 1948-1989. The records of the Pestalozzi Village Trust, 1948-1989, comprise typescript notes compiled by Millicent Coleman, who served on its governing Council. These consist mainly of Council minutes and supporting material, 1948-1989; Committee minutes including Finance and Management Committees, 1953-1985; Annual Reports and Accounts, 1961-1974; policy reports on the development and strategic direction of the Village, 1959-1973; correspondence with Millicent Coleman regarding Trust business and liaison with the National Children's Home, 1953-1985.

Minutes and financial records of the Coal Pool, later the Colliery Pool, an association for sharing colliery insurance claims.

Papers of the Coal Meters' Committee, including minutes, letter books, cash books, ledgers, books of notices and orders, ships' registers, records of coal exports and imports, and papers relating to the reorganisation of the Coal Meters' Office.

The records of the Coal Meters' Benefit Society, the Coal Meters' Provident Club and the Coal Meters' Office Protection Branch also form part of the archives of the Coal Meters' Committee. The Benefit Society records consist chiefly of minutes, resolutions touching amendments to the constitution, statements of account and correspondence relating to the Coal Meters' Benefit Society and Widows' Aid Fund. The Provident Club records contain a copy of rules, nomination form counterfoil book and account book. The Protection Branch records consist of annual reports, ledger accounts and cash books.

Records of the Coal Factors' Society, beginning in 1761 and consisting of minutes, attendance books, letter books, rules and regulations, an account of market dues at the Coal Exchange, financial records including ledgers and cash books, factors' day and entry books, factors' and meters' postage books, an alphabetical list of ships giving gross and net tonnage, lists of named ships with total monthly cost to each factor, comparative lists of the highest prices of best house coals taken for each, contracts made with various persons for the supply of barges, beams, weights, a Tilbury signal code book, and newspaper cuttings. There are no records for the period 1790-1831.

The collection also includes a register of names, destinations and owners of ships, and weight of coal shipped from Newcastle, 1702-4, Ms 30689, which had been found amongst the archives of the Coal Factors' Society and Coal Meters' Committee. It predates both bodies and appears to have been collected as a curio.

Papers, 1977-1988, relating to the Club de Dakar, comprising correspondence, research papers and publications. Includes lists of members; press cuttings; conference and discussion papers; minutes of meetings; reports; accounts and publications.

Records of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists' Clinical Effectiveness Standards Board, 1998-2000, comprising minutes, agendas, papers and associated correspondence, 1998-2000.

'I am going to do a thing, which through delicacy I have never yet been able to do, though I have been at Playford for twenty three years; - that is, to ask you and your cousin Samuel [Alexander] to give a trifle, however small, to the inclosed case...'.

Autograph, with signature. Dated 'Friday afternoon'. With a list of charitable subscribers, including William Allen '... and your son Richard has fiven me a sovereign unasked ...'.

Records of the Clapton Youth Centre, including Senior Members Defence Committee and Committee for the Defence of Clapton Youth Centre minutes and papers; nightly report sheets; Jean Tate, Tutor Warden (later Head)'s correspondence files concerning policy, disciplinary hearings, papers concerning campaigns and events based at the Centre including Anselm Samuel, Tutor in Charge (later Outreach Worker); the death of Colin Roach in Stoke Newington and Colin Roach Family Support Committee (joint campaign with Hackney Black Peoples Association); New Cross Fire demonstrations; trip to Grenada during the Revolution in 1980; related leaflets, posters, photographs and audio cassette tapes.

The records demonstrate how the Centre was run, and how relations deteriorated between the Centre and its parent, the Inner London Education Authority. The papers of the campaigns which were run from the Centre are particularly valuable for research on local issues in Hackney, as well as wider activism in the Black community. The photographs, slides and negatives are also a strong element in the collection, documenting the Centre's activities and related campaigns such as Colin Roach demonstrations and support given to the Knight family.

Records containing personal information concerning Jean Tate and Anslem Samuel are available for general access as those individuals have requested this access rule during their lifetimes. Records containing personal information relating to staff are not available for general access and have been restricted for 84 years from the last date in each file. Records containing personal information relating to members (who were aged 12 years and above) are not available for general access and have been restricted for 88 years from the last date in each file.

Records of the City Parochial Foundation comprise minutes of the Central Governing Body and its committees, 1891-1959 (Mss 8965-70); financial records, 1894-1952 (Mss 8972-81, 10897-8, 10902); register of applications for pensions, 1916-46 (Ms 10901); rentals, land valuation papers, insurance registers, 1898-1948 (Mss 10892-6) and deeds, 1308-1955 (Mss 11018-9, 23737-737A).

Also deposited with the records of the Foundation were a few records relating to the London Polytechnic Council. Records comprise minutes 1894-1904 (Ms 8971). Chelsea Physic Garden records comprise minutes 1899-1936 and cash books 1903-53 (Mss 10899-900). People's Palace Theatre records comprise a cash book 1950-53 (Ms 10903).

Records of the City of London Volunteer Regiment 5th Battalion (National Guard) Old Comrades Association comprising: minute book 1935-1947 (Ms 6438) and scrapbook 1919-47 (Ms 6438A).

Records of the City of London Territorial and Auxiliary Forces Association comprising: minute books, 1908-68 (Ms 12606-14); papers relating to the establishment, constitution and membership of the association, 1907-54 (Ms 12615); annual reports, 1947-55 (Ms 12616), balance sheets, 1951-1954 (Ms 12617); and correspondence, orders and other papers, 1945-1967 (Ms 12618-26). Papers relating to the Charterhouse Rheumatism Clinic including ephemera, cuttings and reprints by H W Crowe (1875-1961), the founder of the Clinic, on rheumatism and tuberculosis.

The archive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy provides a comprehensive record of its activities and development, dating back to its foundation - with two press cuttings books of the 1894 'massage scandals' (P.1), and Council minutes from 1894 onwards (B.1). The core of the collection is formed by complete runs of minute books for the various committees. There are no committee working papers or correspondence files other than those bound with the minutes. Papers relating to education and examination including minutes for all the major committees and sub-committees (C.1), and material relating to the actual administration of examinations: syllabuses, examination papers, result books and reports (C.2). Records relating to membership including membership registers 1895-1975, published lists of members 1920-1986 and minutes and registers of the fund and prize committees 1949-1957 (D). Records of some branches and special interest groups within the CSP can be found in section J.

Material relating to protecting and improving the status of its members within the medical profession can be found in section F, especially in connection with the debates on the place of physiotherapy within the NHS - training, conditions of service and its existence as a profession distinct from others such as occupational therapy. These topics are also discussed in publications (N). Other publications illustrate specific physiotherapy and lifting techniques and advertise physiotherapy as a career. Section P contains 'historical' material relating to the early years of the Society: the 'massage scandal' press cuttings, and correspondence re the Harley Institute massage school 1912-1914. Section P also contains material relating to the writing of the Society's commissioned histories, and personal papers and reminiscences, including a group of papers and photographs relating to Olive Guthrie-Smith and the Swedish Institute, (later St Mary's Hospital School of Physiotherapy), 1904-1939. There is a substantial photograph collection (Q.1), dating from 1900-1980, illustrating many aspects of the Society's work as well as specific treatments and hospital departments. Records of Major Sir William Henry Champness, comprising journals recording his years as undersheriff and sheriff of the City of London, 1928-1938, autobiographical notes, 1873-1925 and personal diaries, 1926-1938.

Apprenticeship indentures for John Mallett and Frank Tringham, to be apprenticed as painters and gas fitters.

The papers are very extensive though there are some lacunae, probably attributable to Chain's many changes of workplace. The early biographical period is sparsely documented, there are sporadic gaps in the correspondence files, and there is no original documentation of the penicillin research at Oxford (although there are many historical accounts and much correspondence about the history of penicillin). The surviving biographical material provides documentation of the arrangements for Chain to live and work in Britain, later honours and awards and his musical interests, and family correspondence, photographs and press-cuttings. There are very substantial records of his later career at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and Imperial College, London, including his continuing contributions to biochemical problems such as carbohydrate metabolism, ergot alkaloids, edible proteins and aeration studies. The Imperial College material also contains records of the creation, administration, finance and architectural design of the Biochemistry Department, and developments in the Department after Chain's statutory retirement in 1973. Additional information about Chain's research is available in the documentation of his very extensive consultancy agreements and collaborative work with industrial firms such as Astra, Beechams and Rank Hovis McDougall, and records relating to government, grant-giving and charitable bodies such as the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research Campaign and Medical Research Council which contributed to the funding of his research. There is much material on Chain's lectures, addresses and broadcasts, and on his extensive travel on visits and conferences, which includes a substantial number of unpublished talks.

An exceptional feature of the Chain papers is the documentation of the large number of Israel and Jewish organisations with which he was associated, especially the Weizmann Institute of Science, where he was a governor for many years and had at one time considered taking up an appointment.

Certificates of Election and Candidature for the Royal Society. Early certificates are entirely manuscript, i.e. vols. 1-8 (1731-1840). Printed forms of ordinary certificates appear in volume 9 from November 1839 (candidates elected in 1840); printed forms for 'privileged class' elections were used from 1875, and for Foreign Membership from 1895. Not all certificates represent elected Fellows; a small percentage are for unsuccessful candidates.

Papers of the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens, 1903-1938, relate to the central organisation including the constitution and notably comprise management and committee minutes, reports and plans regarding the organisation's aims and objectives and finance records; files on the activities of the state and regional level sub-groups; files concerning women's organisations, youth organisations, members and officers, publication and propaganda, activities of other Jewish organisations, Zionism, emigration to Palestine, training for Jewish youth, Anti-Semitism, political, economic and legal situation for Jews in Germany, CV's relationship to religion and religious organisations, and the attitudes of writers and politicians to Jews.

Executive Committee minute book of the Central St Pancras District Nursing Association. This volume was catalogued in 1974 by a member of Guildhall Library staff. The location of any further records is unknown.

Papers of Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief, 1945-1948, comprise reports and memoranda documenting, in part, the challenges encountered by receiving such a large group of refugees with all their attendant problems. Included are some pamphlets and brochures regarding the CBF activities with children from concentration camps.

Papers of the Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief, 1933-1965, detail the work of the CBF in shelters, hostels, internment camps, schools and foster homes, and also contain information on the finances of the fund. The collection notably include CBF minutes of its committees, finance, reports from individuals, and also a complete run of country files detailing the fund's work abroad; records of the Jewish Committee for Relief Abroad and other relief organisations, 1941-1953; records of the Children's Refugee Movement and the Jewish Refugees Committee; files on various other organisations which were involved with the work of the CBF to a greater or lesser extent, including the Agudas Israel World Organisation.
