Papers of Robert Marsham-Townshend, comprising his notes and correspondence of research into the life of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell. Also included are transcripts, original documents, pamphlets, articles and printed books relating to Shovell and his descendants. The purpose of all this was to be a biography on Shovell, which was never written. The substance of Marsham-Townsend's notes is embodied in his articles on the parentage and death of Sir Cloudesley Shovell. These have little bearing on his naval career. The original documents consist mainly of official orders issued from the Navy Office, a few personal documents bearing the signatures of both Shovell and his wife, indentures, deeds and a will.

Papers of Humphrey Page Madden, consisting of official service documents; logs, 1923 to 1925, and photograph albums, 1919 to 1923, 1925 to 1927, 1929, 1930 to 1932 and 1934 to 1941.

The collection consists of 55 letters from Susannah Maria Middleton, wife of Captain Robert Gambier Middleton, to her sister Miss Marion Leake, during her residence in Gibraltar from 1805-1808. The letters describe the every day life of Susannah as a young wife of a naval officer stationed away from home for the first time. They include descriptions of the voyage to and from Gibraltar, the running of her house and farmyard, difficulties in obtaining supplies and receiving packages from England, problems with servants, naval officers stationed in Gibraltar, social activities including balls and dinners, and numerous excursions to the Rock and into Spain. The collection also includes a short unpublished biography of the Middletons and further information about the letters by Michael Middleton entitled "Letters from the Rock, 1805-1808".

Papers of Sir Frederick Thomas Michell. They are a collection of commissions, appointments and letters which cover Michell's whole career, although the Crimean papers are the most numerous; these include landing orders, 1854, and orders for the bombardment of Sebastopol.

Papers of Charles Blois Miller, consisting of a continuous series of logs, 1882 and 1903, and a diary, 1887 to 1890.

Papers of Doctor Andrew Mackay, consisting of letters received including several from Maskelyne, 1787 to 1805, and a series, written between 1794 and 1806, by Francis Maseres (1731-1824), the mathematician. In addition, there are several papers relating to his career, a manuscript copy of 'The theory and practice of finding the longitude' and several of his printed works.

Papers of Granville Murray-Browne, consisting of intelligence reports, W/T messages and Reuters messages collected by Lt-Cdr Murray-Browne while serving in the INDEFATIGABLE, 1914 to 1915. They are chiefly of interest as an example of the standard of information about current affairs available at the beginning of the First World War.

The principal series include the papers of Sir William Coventry (1628?-1686), 1585 to 1680, in the possession of the Marquess of Bath; the Royal Greenwich Observatory papers, 1674 to 1892, and the Board of Longitude papers, 1714 to 1829, held by the Royal Greenwich Observatory; and papers of Admiral Sir John Duckworth (q.v.) 1793 to 1813, held by Yale University and other repositories in North America. The remaining microfilms are mostly of smaller items, some obtained in fulfilment of conditions to secure an export licence. Examples of these include copies of the journals of Augustus Keppel (q.v.) kept during Anson's circumnavigation, 1739 to 1744; of Captain Cook (1728-1779) in the ENDEAVOUR, 1768 to 1770; and of Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) kept during the same voyage, 1768 to 1771.

Papers of the Marine Society. They consist of: minutes, registers and accounts of the Marine Society, 1756 to 1978, and records of organizations absorbed by the Society, 1919 to 1977. The minutes include those of the General and Extraordinary Court of the Marine Society, 1777 to 1959, with indices 1777 to 1825; those of the Committee of Management, 1756 to 1975, with, from 1774 to 1949, an account of the Annual General Meeting; and indices, 1774 to 1907, 1933 to 1948; minutes of Sub-Committees, 1903 to 1961 and minutes of Routine Grants, 1955 to 1964. There are five related letterbooks, 1802 to 1892. The registers include: boys admitted, 1756 to 1763, 1889 to 1958; boys received and discharged from the Society's ship, 1786 to 1874; boys entered as servants in the King's ships, 1770 to 1873, with indices, 1770 to 1873; apprentices sent to merchant ships, 1772 to 1950, with indices, 1770 to 1838; landsmen volunteers, 1756 to 1814; girls apprenticed by the Marine Society, 1772 to 1957, and girls 'placed out' from the Hickes Fund, 1926 to 1978; awards of merit, 1898 to 1954; members of the Warspite Old Boys Association, 1917 to 1949. The accounts consist of: records of daily cash, 1772 to 1852; ledgers showing income and expenditure, 1756 to 1807, 1939 to 1962; cash accounts, balanced and signed by the Chairman, 1782 to 1785; an expenses book with quarterly abstracts of accounts, 1898 to 1903; six volumes of monthly cash accounts, 1801 to 1829; widow's pensions, Hawkins Trust, 1784 to 1849; annuities paid out for Admiral Duncan's victory, 1802 to 1877; one dividend ledger, 1903 to 1947; another containing accounts of Trusts, 1934 to 1964; cash paid, 1939 to 1970; another containing accounts of Trusts, 1934 to 1964; cash paid, 1939 to 1970; and cash received, 1949 to 1971. There are also seven volumes of subscription lists, 1769 to 1875, and two volumes recording donations and legacies, 1756 to 1880. Loose papers, letters and newspaper cuttings relating to the history of the Marine Society are contained in four volumes, 1756 to 1939. The records of organisations absorbed by the Marine Society include the records pf the Seafarers' Education Service. These consist of minutes of the management committee, 1919 to 1975; a register of members, 1947 to 1975; minutes of the Commission, 1946 to 1976. There are also minutes of the British Adoption Society, 1935 to 1975; minutes of the committee for the Sea War Library Service, 1940 to 1946; a volumes of minutes of the Trustees of the Merchant Navy Comforts Society, 1946 to 1977; and two volumes of this Society's Committee of Management, 1942 to 1950.

Papers of George Prideaux Brabant Naish. Included are personal and research papers of the Reverend Francis Naish, some relating to his identification of the Burlesdon wreck as the GRACE DIEU. There are also papers which relate to George Naish's command of the Anti-Submarine Fixed Defence Station, Fort Agami, Alexandria, 1945-6. Papers relating to his role as Secretary to the Society for Nautical Research between 1947 and 1977 may be found in the archive of the Society at this Museum.

Papers of Sir Gerard Henry Uctred Noel. They consist of some volumes and a large collection of correspondence, papers and printed material. The volumes include Noel's midshipman's log, 1861 to 1865,' the captain's letterbook of the Immortalite, 1877; for the Temeraire and Nile, a night order book, 1889 to 1893; Noel's admiral's journal, 1898 to 1900, and three letter-books, 1904 to 1906. There are papers for Noel's service on the torpedo committee, 1884, for his time at the Admiralty; his command in the Mediterranean, in particular for Crete, 1898; and for his commands at home, 1901 to 1903; in China, including reports on the Russo-Japanese War, 1904 to 1906; and at the Nore. There are papers and printed reports for the National Service League, of which Noel was an active member, and many printed pamphlets, some by Noel himself who wrote on education and various other naval topics. His personal papers include diaries, 1880 to 1918, student's notebooks, personal notebooks, press cuttings and a large amount of private and semi-official correspondence, for all his career. There are also letters by Noel to his wife and letters written by his son, Francis Noel, to Admiral Noel's wife during the 1914-1918 war.

Papers of Olive North. They include Olive's account of the sinking of the RMS LUSITANIA and her rescue, correspondence shortly before and after the disaster, press cuttings relating to the RMS LUSITANIA and lists of passengers and crew.

Papers of Sir Henry Francis Oliver, they include papers relating to the establishment of the Navigation School, and to the Dardanelles Operations, 1915 to 1917; included in the latter are minutes and notes by Churchill. There is also a Report of the Grand Fleet Committee on Officers' Pay and Prospects, 1919. Other letters and papers span Oliver's career, 1914 to 1965, although thinly. There is a diary, 1925 to 1927, a draft autobiography and official service documents.

Papers of Orient Steam Navigation Co Ltd .Most of them are post-Second World War; the majority of the earlier records were destroyed when the company's city offices were bombed in the early part of the war. For Anderson, Green and Company Limited, surviving material includes the minutes of the Directors' meetings, 1941 to 1969; the Reports of the Directors to the Annual General Meetings of the Shareholders, 1941 to 1969; the Register of Directors and Secretaries, 1919 to 1969; files containing items for Secretary's Agenda, 1960, and miscellaneous correspondence, 1960 to 1965. Among the Orient Steam Navigation Company papers are minutes of a committee of the Directors, 1946 to 1948; minutes of the Directors' meetings, 1948 to 1964; Annual Reports from the Directors to the Shareholders, 1945 to 1960, together with balance sheets, profit and loss accounts and newspaper cuttings. The company Seal Register, 1959 to 1965, is also present and there are copies of the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the company, with amendments, 1900 to 1965. The shareholders' records include lists of dividends paid to shareholders, 1954 to 1964. There is also a file containing some correspondence and other documents on the offer made by the P&O Company to Orient Line ordinary shareholders, 1960, together with acceptance forms for the sale of shares, and similar for preference shareholders, 1965. Few book-keeping records have survived, but there are some working papers on cash accumulations and analysis of receipts and payments, 1937 to 1940 and 1949 to 1953; private ledgers, 1933 to 1948, 1955 to 1959; journal, 1953 to 1966; analysis of passenger embarkations and passage earnings, 1959; and steamers' ledgers, 1947, and 1958 to 1959, together with a cash book analysis ledger, 1960; investment ledgers, 1924 to 1959. There are several files containing display advertising samples, 1931 to 1940, 1949 to 1953, and a number of copies of the Orient Line Guide, which went through several editions, 1888 to 1901 Records of ships include a selection of ship files, 1936 to 1954, including voyage reports, ship sinkings in the Second World War, newspaper cuttings, etc; some material on schedules, 1956 to 1958; passenger earnings, 1956; and a box of papers on migration, 1947 to 1956. Books of Instructions, to commanders on the carrying of mails, 1911; pursers, 1931; surgeons, 1947; and officers, 1960, have also been retained, together with a copy of Uniform Regulations, 1958. Staff records include a volume containing Reports on Character, Stewards' Department, ca.1913 to ca.1925. Finally, there are several copies of the Articles of Association of P&O/ Orient Lines Passenger Services Limited. (Section 3: OSN/: 45ft: 1,372cm) Ships' Plans: these were deposited on loan in 1963, 1969 and 1970. This collection comprises prints and linen tracings of six typical Orient liners, 1917 to 1937. Lines, general arrangements and hydrostatics are included as are 'as fitted' drawings and specifications.

Battersea Parish was responsible for the civil administration of Battersea until the creation of Battersea Metropolitan Borough Council in 1900. This collection includes records of: the Battersea Parish Vestry; the Battersea Parish Overseers of the Poor; the Battersea Workhouse, 1744-1835; the parish Churchwardens; Battersea Lammas Hall; the parish Surveyor of Highways; various charities within the parish; and other records relating to the civil administration of the parish.

Many of the deeds relate to these purchases of the main estate. Others relate to additional purchases, each with their supporting title deeds of earlier date referring to previous owners. There is a series of numbers pencilled on the majority of these later deeds, and this order has been strictly maintained in this list. The following groups of deeds were tied in bundles: D1/16-29, D1/34-50, D1/52-55, D1/56-65. There are admissions and surrenders relating to property in the manor of Battersea and Wandsworth.

The collection is mostly comprised of diaries written by Florence Turtle between 1917 and 1980. The first three diaries (1917-1919) contain generally brief and sporadic entries. There are then no diaries for the years 1920-1928. From 1929 onwards the diaries contain more detailed entries. There are no diaries for the years 1944, 1946, 1948-1949, 1952-1954, 1962, 1964-1965, or 1967-1970. Florence writes in her diaries about her relationships with family and friends, her living situation, work life, social life, holidays, and local, national and international current events, and records her thoughts and feelings on various matters. Many of the diaries contain additional notes, clarifications and corrections made by Florence in the 1970s. Some of the diaries contain photographs, and also pencil illustrations by Florence. The collection also contains one volume in which Florence reviews the books she reads throughout 1936, and a volume entitled 'Book of Ideas', in which Florence has written quotations from various sources, and also glued newspaper cuttings. The remaining items in the collection are a set of photographs of Florence's family and friends, and a framed certificate of election to the Buyers Association of Great Britain.
