Papers of Sir Albert Ruskin Cook and Lady Katharine Cook including correspondence, 1812-1951, giving many details of the Cooks' life and work in Uganda. There is also a large collection of diaries, 1855-1951, a number of photographs of Uganda and holidays abroad, c 1896-1930s, family and personal papers, 1882-1951, a small amount of printed material, [1896-1947], and microfilms of records held at the Albert R Cook Library of Medicine at the Makerere University Medical School, Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, covering 1897-1960s and including patient case notes and registers 1897-1920.

Papers of noted Jungian analyst Michael Fordham, with some papers of his second wife, Frieda Fordham, formerly Hoyle, also an analytical psychotherapist. They include his correspondence with C. G. Jung over a period of several decades and files relating to his work as co-editor of of Jung's published Collected Works, material on the Society of Analytical Psychology (of which Michael Fordham was one of the founders), correspondence with colleagues,and files relating to the infant observation courses at the Tavistock Clinic with which Michael Fordham became involved in later life. There is also a good deal on the evolution of Michael Fordham's ideas, both in his own published and unpublished writings, and in the annotated research material. There is much less surviving material relating to Frieda Fordham's life and career, apart from a substantial amount of correspondence from the years immediately preceding their marriage (PP/FOR/A.3/2), and a few published and unpublished papers (PP/FOR/B.9).

Papers of Marthe Vogt, relating almost entirely to Vogt's scientific career, 1895-1988. Personal material is found in section A and includes a rare set of publications by her distinguished scientist parents Oskar and Cécile Vogt (A/1/2-4), a bibliography of Oskar Vogt (A/1/1), plus biographical information on Marthe Vogt (A/2) and various certificates of awards presented to her (A/3). Section B chiefly comprises notebooks and other papers relating to her experimental research, from Vogt's Berlin days through to the early 1980s. This research, meticulously recorded by Vogt, formed the background to many of her important and seminal papers in the field of neurotransmitters. The bulk of the collection is formed by Section C; 20 boxes of Vogt's correspondence covering all aspects of her work and career, chiefly from her arrival in Britain in 1935 up until 1988. This has been listed in detail and is arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent. Section D is a rather miscellaneous grouping of material relating to various aspects of Vogt's work. It includes papers and lectures on her adrenal research (D/1), lists of those who were sent reprints of her published articles (D/2), some ephemera relating to the Institute of Animal Research at Babraham (D/3), Vogt's University of Berlin doctoral thesis 1929 (D/4/1) and some book reviews written by her between 1952 and 1983 (D/4/2). The photographs comprising Section E include portraits of Vogt's father, mother and sister taken in Germany (E/1), an excellent collection of portraits of Marthe Vogt (E/2) and series documenting her attendance at conferences all over the world (E/4) and her many colleagues-friends and contacts (E/3).

Papers of Dr William Barton, 1960s-1970s, contain Barton's collection of reel to reel audio tapes and reflect his professional interest in the work of Professor George MacDonald. Tapes notably include recordings of lectures made by MacDonald on subjects including yellow fever, malaria and health services, 1960s; broadcast series of lectures 'The Road to Hell', featuring Barton speaking on bilharzia and schistomiasis, 1960s, and an interview with a Mrs Barton on Girl Guides, in the Government Information Studio in St Vincents, 1970s.

Three rent books, suspected to be from Stepney Green Court, Stepney Green, and Mocatto House, Whitechapel, owned by the Four Per Cent Industrial Dwellings Company, listing occupier, occupation and rent paid (1921-1947).

Papers of George Bellas Greenough, 1794-1855, falling into three broad sections: papers connected with his work, personal papers, and correspondence. They are hierarchically divided into nine series: published works; societies of which Greenough was president; travels; fields of interest; learned and scientific institutions and clubs with which he was associated; personal history; papers relating to his friends; acquired papers; and correspondence, relating mainly to geology or to some other aspect of Greenough's work. Greenough kept many series of notebooks and memorandum books into which he copied the notes he had jotted down in conversation or when reading. The 'Personal History' section contains little biographical or family data, although Greenough's early efforts in poetry, prose and translation from the Greek are well represented, and there are papers relating to his house, his garden and his investments. There are few letters to his friends.

Archives of the London Mathematical Society, 1853-1994, the bulk comprising c500 letters to Thomas Archer Hirst, 1853-1892, mainly in his capacity as a member of the LMS, including a letter inviting him to the first meeting of the Society, and also reflecting his travels in Europe, including letters from prominent European mathematicians. The letters include several from Henry M Bompas, 1865, 1874-1879; Arthur Cayley, 1858-1891 and undated; Michel Chasles, 1858-1871 and undated; Luigi Cremona, 1864-1892 and undated; Augustus De Morgan, 1861-1869; Georges-Henri Halphen, 1875-1879; Amédée Mannheim, 1866-1891; Julius Plücker, 1866-1868; William Roberts, 1859-1865 and undated; George Salmon, 1858-1878; [Hermann Cäsar Hannibal?] Schubert, 1877-1884; Henry John Stephen Smith, 1865-1876 and undated; William Spottiswoode, 1862, 1865, 1883; Cyparissos Stephanos, 1877-1887; Rudolf Sturm, 1874-1892; James Joseph Sylvester, 1859-1888 and undated; Barnaba Tortolini, 1858-1863; Richard Townsend, 1865-1878; John Van Voorst, 1864-1867; and there are a few letters from Hirst himself. The archive also includes a bound notebook containing a manuscript catalogue of the LMS library by R A Sampson, 1891-1893; miscellaneous administrative correspondence and papers, 1964-1975; membership lists, 1966-1972; binder of papers of H T J Norton on mathematics, with correspondence, largely to E H Neville, regarding their disposition in the LMS archive in c1938, and also including bibliographical material on elliptic functions, apparently compiled by Neville [1930s-1950s]; miscellaneous letters and papers on research, 1986, 1992-1994.

Manuscript letter, dated 22 February, 1643, containing an Order of the Committee of Revenue to Thomas Fauconbridge, Receiver of Crown Revenues, to pay 'the poore Pewterers or Hammer men' of London the sum of £100, due to them by virtue of an Act of Parliament. The letter is signed by members of the Committee for Revenue, including Sir Henry Vane, Sir Henry Mildmay, Francis Rous, William Ashhurst, Thomas Hoyle and Dennis Bond. With a receipt dated 27 February 1643, bearing 56 signatures or marks and the signature of Robert Leeson, Warden of the Worshipful Company of Pewteres.

A history, c1826, and copies of three Royal Licences permitting it to enlarge its stock. Both the history and the licenses are in the same hand.

(1) Letter from Eyre Massey Shaw of the Metropolian Fire Brigade, Watling Street, London to Mr Fraser, 21 Mar 1872. Explaining that he is unable to inspect premises unless invited to do so by the occupants. The law allows 'your neighbours to set their premises on fire, & then, but only then, I have full power to break in & interfere. The moment the place is cool I must walk away ...'.

(2) Letter from Eyre Massey Shaw of the Fire Brigade, Southwark, London to Miss E S Busk, 13 Jul 1889. Stating that Mr G W Gamble, who had applied to Miss Busk for books, was thoroughly respectable, but 'he is not the whole institution', and advising her to lend the books, and then, if the 'society is likely to endure', to turn the loan into a gift; [the society mentioned has not be identified].

Both letters are autograph, with signatures.

Letter from Charles Robert Darwin of Down, Farnborough, Kent to an unnamed member of the Council of the Palaeontographical Society [the Secretary, J S Bowerbank], [Feb or Mar 1850]. Thanking him for the loan of Pollicipes cornucopia. Referring to the Society's acceptance of his (Darwin's) proposal [an offer to prepare a monograph on the 'British Fossil Cirripedia']; stating that the plates are being prepared by James de C Sowerby, who will be the best man to engrave them. Concluding: 'I suppose I was admitted a member of the Palaeont. Soc. and shall sometime here when and where I can pay my subscriptions, etc.'

The events mentioned date the letter to later than 22 Feb 1850, when Darwin's monograph proposal was accepted, and before 15 Mar 1850, when he was proposed to serve as a member of the Society's Council.
