Records of the Business Equipment Trade Association (BETA) and related organisations. The collection includes a complete run of 27 volumes of council minutes, from July 1951 to December 1980. The minutes reflect the association's preoccupation with its role as a public relations body, and with issues affecting its membership, such as VAT or decimalisation. Issues discussed reflect the changing commercial climate, illustrating the increased use of microelectronic technology, although individual products are seldom mentioned unless they are the subject of a dispute. Considerable time is also given over to general internal and administrative matters, and to the continued examination of BETA's aims and activities. Two divisional minute books provide a taste of the activities of the association's sections. Council working papers and correspondence include duplicate minutes of council meetings, reports to council on executive committee meetings, press cuttings, and correspondence relating to association luncheons. A sample of the association's journal is also included.

Correspondence of Chief Rabbi Nathan Adler, 1868-1901. A small number of records survive from around 1868 for the Chief Rabbinate of Nathan Adler and more from the late 1870s onwards - around the time Hermann Adler began to undertake many of his father's duties for him. The records consist of bundles of letters to the Chief Rabbi from communal organisations and individuals in Britain and overseas.

Records of the Great Western (London) Housing Association, covering the association's creation in 1923 to its dissolution in 1990. They include a complete run of forty two volumes of minute books and annual reports.

Records of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, relating not only to the everyday administration of the Society (Acc/2899/01 and Acc/2899/02), but also to social and educational activities. Acc/2899/03 contains a large quantity of information relating to the latter. In the main the records date from the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1970's, although there is a sizeable amount of earlier material, and a small amount for later years

Records of the Surrey Tabernacle Benefit Society, including Management Committee minutes; subscriptions and benefits books; sick pay books; audited accounts; register of deaths; correspondence; and death benefit nominations.

Records of the Tailors Benevolent Institution. Despite a few gaps in the minute books, the most regrettable being the absence of the first minute book, the records give a clear picture of the development of a trade benevolent enterprise. The gaps are in part compensated for by the survival of accounts and cash books from the foundation of the institution and by a diary for 1837 belonging probably to the first secretary. The records are in good condition.

Records of the London Society for Jews and Christians, including minute books; correspondence; financial accounts; reports; bulletins; press cuttings; papers for publication; copies of talks; and programmes and advertisements for meetings and conferences.

Records of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, 1760-2002. The archive is central to the history of the modern Jewish community in Britain. It covers virtually every facet of Jewish life in Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - assimiliation, education, political emancipation, Shechita, anti-Semitism. The archive is particularly interesting on the conditions of Jewry outside the UK - there is a lot of information, for example, on the rise of fascism in mainland Europe in the 1930s and the Holocaust.

Records of the Peabody Trust, including corporate records, financial accounts, personnel records, property records, estate management, plans, photographs, publications, artefacts, seal books, clasp books and legal papers.

Records of the Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes, including corporate records; financial records; correspondence; property records; tenants' records; plans; photographs; publications and artefacts.

Records of the Westminster Housing Trust including corporate records; financial accounts; administrative records; legal records; personnel papers; estate management papers; tenants' records; plans; photographs and publications.

Receipts for various taxes paid in Middlesex, 1566-1724; also certificate by Lord Berkeley that he has examined the accounts of John Billington, Chief Bailiff and Clerk of the Peace in the Tower Liberty, 1762; printed list of members of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors, 1783 and letter from Sir Robert Peel concerning his intention to offer himself as a candidate for the County of Middlesex, 1832.

Minute book and an account book for the Poors Piece Charity, Hanwell.

The collection contains minutes of the NUTC and the LUTC from their foundation to the 1950's. Files date from the 1940's to 1984. It also contains a minute book of the Sunday Closing Special Campaign Committee (SCSCC) which transferred its work to the NUTC in 1903 (this Committee may have been appointed by the NUTC). The secretary of the NUTC (and LUTC) also served as one of the two general secretaries on the SCSCC. A minute book of the Free Churches Pledge Signing Campaign Committee (FCPSCC) appears in the collection. This committee was dissolved in 1911. Representatives of the NUTC and LUTC attended meetings which were held in Memorial Hall, Farringdon Street, and in 1911 the secretary of the NUTC and LUTC was also secretary of the FCPSCC.

A minute book of the Society of Cogers appears in the collection probably because an NUTC member, H. Weightman (later NUTC secretary and treasurer), was acting secretary of the society c.1919.

The recording of financial income and expenditure into ledgers was not always done. A number of blank ledgers deposited suggest the aim of entering such information, but it was never achieved. An almost complete set of audited, annual summary accounts from 1911 to 1975 provide the bulk of information on finance.

Minutes of the Insurance Companies (War Settlement) Committee.

Records of the London Wharf and Warehouse Committee, including minute books; surveyors' reports; and plans of wharfs, warehouses and docks.

The surviving records of the Printers and Theatres Rating Committee (Southern Committee) are incomplete. They mostly concern the rating of individual risks. As a result, they contain much information about particular theatres, music halls, cinemas, film production studios, publishers, printers and allied trades (including papermakers), and associated processes and products. Some of the records are indexed by name and/or place. The whereabouts of the records of the Northern and Scottish Rating Committees is unknown.

Records of the Association of Investment Trusts, later the Association of Investment Trust Companies and then the Association of Investment Companies. The records comprise some constitutional documents, minutes of the various committees, annual reports and accounts and supporting papers, financial material, along with many files of correspondence on particular topics, as well as a large serie of files relating to members of the Association. These records are all held off-site and require 24 hours notice for access.

Papers of Charles Cox and Son, marine agents, comprising eight volumes of letters from Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel concerning pay and other financial matters.

Records of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, comprising constitutional documents, minutes, correspondence (notably about International Banking summer schools), and photographs. Access to post 1980 material is restricted. The records are held off-site and require 24 hours notice for access.

Papers of the Coal Meters' Committee, including minutes, letter books, cash books, ledgers, books of notices and orders, ships' registers, records of coal exports and imports, and papers relating to the reorganisation of the Coal Meters' Office.

The records of the Coal Meters' Benefit Society, the Coal Meters' Provident Club and the Coal Meters' Office Protection Branch also form part of the archives of the Coal Meters' Committee. The Benefit Society records consist chiefly of minutes, resolutions touching amendments to the constitution, statements of account and correspondence relating to the Coal Meters' Benefit Society and Widows' Aid Fund. The Provident Club records contain a copy of rules, nomination form counterfoil book and account book. The Protection Branch records consist of annual reports, ledger accounts and cash books.

United Associations Limited records comprise: minutes of the board, 1923-1966 (Ms 23250); and financial accounts including ledgers and cash books, 1923-1967 (Ms 23251-5).

Personal papers of Reverend Charles John Todd, navy chaplain, comprising certificates of ordination as a deacon and priest, 1878-79; commission as a Navy chaplain, 1881; letters written home from Navy ships from Zanzibar, Suez, Sudan, India, Ceylon [Sri Lanka], and Japan; diaries and notebooks describing hunting expeditions in Ceylon and East Africa; diary of a diplomatic mission to King John of Abyssinia [Ethiopia], 1884; newspaper cuttings; photographs of Todd; and a description of Todd's Navy service, 1976.

Records of the Inns of Court and City Yeomanry including orders, attestations books, circulars, minutes, muster rolls, correspondence and other papers. Where an item or series continues for some years, it may well bear more than one of the Regiment's titles. Some miscellaneous papers relating to the Regiment's history as a whole are placed near the end of the second sequence (Mss 17799-804). A few incidental items relating to earlier volunteer regiments are placed at the beginning of the first and second sequences. Notes relating to the early origins and history of the Regiment can be found in Ms 17804.

Records of the City of London Volunteer Regiment 5th Battalion (National Guard) Old Comrades Association comprising: minute book 1935-1947 (Ms 6438) and scrapbook 1919-47 (Ms 6438A).

Records of the London Rifle Brigade, comprising registers of subscriptions, minutes, financial records, newsletters and other papers. The records were catalogued at various dates from 1955 by Guildhall Library staff.

The records comprise: account book, 1871-9 (Ms 09410A), and general fund ledger, 1883-5, and signed enrolments, 1885-8 (Ms 09410B). It is not known whether any other records survive of this Militia.

Minute books of the Engineering Offices Association, an association of engineering insurers.

The records of the Industrial Life Offices Association consist of minute books, annual accounts and files. The minute books appear to form an almost complete set, except for those of the Executive, which end in 1977; and those of the Quarterly Meeting, which end in 1956. From 1920, the minute books are annotated with reference numbers, apparently referring to supporting papers, the whereabouts of which are unknown.

Records of the Issuing Houses Association including executive committee minutes (Ms 29328), reports and accounts (Mss 29329-331), membership files (Mss 29332-3), copies of the Association's rules (Ms 29336) and a useful booklet about Issuing Houses and the Issuing Houses Association (Ms 29337).

Access to records less than 30 years old should be sought from the London Investment Banking Association (contact details may be obtained from a member of staff). The Association retains its more recent records. No other records are known to exist.

Papers of Thomas Bowrey, sea captain and merchant, including ledger; correspondence; diaries; drawings; charts; and maps; relating to travel and trade in India, Africa, Holland, France, Batavia (Jakarta) and Persia (Iran); the "Coffree" language of Delagoa and the Telenga language; shipping insurance and Lloyd's coffee house; whaling; and piracy.

Papers of Joseph Jackson Howard, antiquary, including sketches and rubbings of monuments in churches, especially St Helen Bishopsgate, copies of inscriptions, some original manuscripts, transcripts of monumental inscriptions, notes on the Barber Surgeons' Company, and notes on the aldermen, recorders and chamberlains of the City of London.

Records of the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers. The records were compiled from the early 15th century, but they include title deeds from 1290. Records include charters; ordinances; Court minute books; minute books of Master and Wardens meetings; papers relating to bursaries and benefactions; lists of Masters and Wardens; registers of apprentice bindings and freedom admissions; quarterage books; financial accounts; papers relating to charities and almshouses; papers relating to estates owned by the Company; inventories; plans of Armourer's Hall; deeds and other legal documents relating to property owned by the Company.

The archive also includes records of Camden almshouses, 1895 - 1947 (Ms 33960 and Ms 35052A, 2 production units). They include rules and orders, sale particulars, licences and correspondence. Further references may be found in other Company records such as minutes and accounts.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ACCESS: These records are stored at the Guildhall Library site rather than the LMA Clerkenwell site. Researchers wishing to access these records should do so at the Guildhall Library Rare Books table. The Library is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 16:45. Researchers will need to have an Archives History Card or a Library Readers Card. An archivist will be available at Guildhall Library on Thursday mornings to answer any queries.
