The collection, 1835-1850, contains letters and printed papers, notices and unpublished printed material, which Airy received during his time as a member of the Senate of the University of London. The Airy correspondence has a special importance because much of the early archival material of the University of London was destroyed and so often the only record of its activities is in the Senate and Committee Minutes. Airy was particularly interested in the constitution of the University, the developments of the mathematics syllabus, the syllabuses for certificates in hydrography and civil engineering and the introduction of the religious examination.

This series of minute books comprises one of the most important sources of evidence of the strategic and academic development within the Polytechnic and College from the earliest subscription campaign for the new Institute to the closure of Chelsea when it merged with King's in 1985. Papers relating to the University of Cape Town's opposition to the South African Universities Amendment Bill, under which univerisities were to be prohibited from admitting black students beyond a quota to be stipulated annually by the Government, 1982-1983.

Papers of George Dawes Hicks, 1880s-[1928] and undated, mainly comprising typescript and manuscript texts of his lectures at University College London on philosophical subjects including psychology, ethics, logic, metaphysics, Greek philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Spinoza, Lotze, Bradley, and modern philosophy; also including notebooks containing manuscript texts of the lectures on philosophy and psychology of Professor Robert Adamson, delivered at Owens College Manchester, 1886-1888, and at Glasgow, 1899-1900 (in boxes 2, 11, 13); printed and manuscript papers, 1880s-1890s, on educational issues, specifically the campaign to extend university teaching in London by establishing a teaching university, supported by University College London and King's College London, to secure a new charter for the University of London, and opposition to the campaign (in boxes 4, 17, 19, 20). Not all the lecture notes were originally made by Dawes Hicks himself.

Papers relating to student unrest at the University of Transkei (UNITRA), South Africa, 1984, triggered by the questioning of four students, and the detention of two others by security police; this led to the boycotting of classes and closures of the campus. Many students were arrested and detained, several members of the Students' Representative Council were suspended by the University and four members of staff were deported from Tramnskei. The papers include documents produced by the Principal and other members of the University administration and the Students' Representative Council, during the period of unrest; legal papers concerning court action brought by suspended students; submissions to the ensuing Commission of Enquiry; and news cuttings relating to student unrest, 1980-1984.

Collection comprises copies of correspondence, lecture notes and ephemera relating to the career of Charles Bloxam, including correspondence with other chemists such as John Frederic Daniell, Professor of Chemistry, King's College London, Sir Frederick Augustus Abel and Professor August Wilhelm Hofmann, Director of the Royal College of Chemistry, especially concerning the properties of electricity, the publication of chemistry text books by Bloxam and Abel, and the education received by Bloxam at the Royal College, 1834-1929; correspondence relating to the management of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and Bloxam's resignation as lecturer, 1856-1882; papers concerning Bloxam's tenure at King's College London, notably including reference to the reorganisation of the teaching of chemistry at King's, 1854-1873; working papers on the teaching of chemistry at King's, including outlines of the content of lectures and syllabuses, 1846-1871; lecture notes on the properties of allotropes of carbon, the calcium group of earth metals, metals in solution and solutions of acids and non- metallic bodies, 1870-1887; notebook compiled by Bloxam describing a wide variety of basic experiments including the the decomposition of water, distillation of coal and the fermentation of sugar, [1870-1887]; texts of various lectures delivered by Bloxam, 1858-1865; accounts relating to the supply of laboratory equipment to King's College and with John Churchill, Bloxam's publishing company, 1832-1890; school report for Bloxam, 1842-1846; documentation relating mainly to the funeral and marriage arrangements of family members, 1856-1872; obituaries and biography of Bloxam by David Ian Davies, published in Analytical Proceedings, August, 1981.

The papers of John Pearson comprise manuscript notebooks of lectures and experimental write-ups compiled by Pearson when he was a student at Chelsea Polytechnic, 1954-1957, and include notes on electricity, optics, electronics and circuit theory, electromagnetic theory, diffraction gratings, wave mechanics and X-ray physics.
